The Broken Bones Thread

What are the most serious injuries you’ve suffered?

Cracked rib? Fractured skull? Just broke a nail? Ouch.

Now’s the time to point to all your scars.

I have no good injury stories. The only thing I’ve ever broken is my pinky finger. Caught a football wrong. Manly, huh?

What about you? And how did it happen?

Note: Sicknesses don't count – those are just depressing

Worst I've done is torn my ligament in my arm after falling off a trampoline.

Gained a new scar 3 hours ago, had to have an infection cut out of my foot in A&E. Hurt like a [censored].

I fractured my skull when I was about 3, I jumped off of a coffee table into a (thankfully) unlit brick fireplace, I had to get my head stapled in 4 spots.

Edit: Whoops I svck.

Stuck a garden fork right through my foot. Oddly enough, it didn't really hurt or even bleed, though it was possible to see daylight through it. I'm lucky I missed any bones otherwise it would've been more serious, but as it turned out, the tetanus vaccination in my bum hurt considerably more.

I guess heart attacks count as illness though it probably was brought on by chocolate-related misadventure (diabetes can't be treated with chocolate, I was astonished to find out.) That was quite ouchie.

No broken bones ever, but I did crack a tooth.

You know those metal hand trucks you roll boxes around on? I ran into one that was lying down; it came up and hit my face like a cartoon rake gag. Front tooth went through my lip and scraqed the metal. Had to get a root canol when all the nerves died, and I still have a bump scar on my lip.

Also hyperextended my shoulder bad when I was being pulled on an innertube behind a boat. Apparently when you hit the wake and get thrown off you're supposed to let go, and not stupidly hang on and flail around like a rag doll. Shoulder still hurts sometimes when I get stressed out.

Edit: And not really an injury so much as it was a horrible experience, but when I was little I got stung by a scorpion while lying in bed. In the crotch.

Broke my wrist in a few places when I was about 10. A man threw me over a fence so I could get my tennis ball back...

Worst part was them re-breaking it to set again after it didn't heal correctly the first time! Hurt far more than when I first did it.

I broke the bone in half and displaced the joint of my pinky finger back in January snowboarding. I had it splinted up that night and kept snowboarding.

Broke my arm on two occasions. One was riding my bike when I was like 6, the other was climbing the outside of a McDonalds playset (because I'm just that awesome).

My most recent injury was while I was longboarding. I was going down a hill that was steeper than I thought and got speed wobble, at which point I jumped off in order to avoid getting thrown 20 feet and onto my face. But, I just happened to step into a pothole, which yanked my knee out of socket then slammed it back in. This caused my ACL to not tear, but pull out the piece of bone that it was attached to from my tibia, sort of like uprooting a plant. They had to drill through the side of my tibia and up, then push a wire through and attach that to the uprooted bone and pull it down back into place. I was in a full leg cast for 3 months and a locked metal supported brace for 2.

I'd just describe it as careless. Waking up to discover a spider in my mouth was horrifying. Though being me, I ended up feeling sorry for the spider: some of its legs were a bit mangled.

Ah, I was going to start a thread like this!

I have a giant white gash on my left calf. Both of my wrists are broken. I have scars on my left wrist from surgery. I have a broken nose. I have a few gashes on the back of my head. I have a small scar on my chin. I have a huge scar above my left eye... just under my eyebrow. It spans the entire eyebrow's length. I nearly lost my eye that time. I have a tiny bit of neuropraxis in my right foot -- I can't feel much just under my ankle.

Most are the result of monkeying around and/or sports.

I think that's it...

Yours sounds better than mine. On vacation, I stepped on a rusty nail. The country was a bit blase about things like tetanus... Luckily I managed to find one of the few places that did offer the shots. See? Yours is way better.

I cracked my lower jaw once, many years ago as a little kid. I was riding my bike around on the street, and through circumstances too long ago to remember clearly, I hit the asphalt chin-first. I'm sure it hurt, but I don't really remember that part. What was worse is that I hate jello. I insisted on being taken out of the hospital on a wheelchair, because I was a little kid and thought a drivable chair was just the coolest thing.

Not sure if it counts among injuries, but the first time I tried to have my wisdom teeth removed, I discovered I was allergic to the painkiller they used. This discovery came not long after an IV deposited it directly into my bloodstream. I went into anaphylactic shock, got carried down several floors on a stretcher, and taken to the hospital. I valiantly resisted the temptation to shout "run for your lives, he's a madman!" while being wheeled out through the orthodontist's waiting room. That or I was valiantly not conscious enough to consider it.

I slit my finger almost all the way around back when I was sixteen, I had to get ten stitches for my finger. To this day I have limited feeling in my right pointer finger. Apparently I cut it down to the nerve and tendon, when they cut the nerves with scissors I didn't even feel it. I also broke my leg when I was three.

I got shot in the buttocks in Vietnam, lost my friend Bubba there.

Broke my wrist when I was really young, like 2?

Other than that I've been pretty much invincible since... So no major injuries, except a torn ligament in my ankle after falling awkwardly on a trampoline.

broken wrists, knuckles and my nose - all from fighting (grew up in a rough part of town. bullies were everywhere, if you let them bully you)

i have a ten-stitch scar on my left calf which i got from a stray piece of metal on a demolition job i was on tore through my jeans. had to walk to the hospital looking like i'd dunked my foot in a bucket of red paint.

and my left eye still gets RIDIUCULOUSLY blood-shot after a gardening accident. i was digging up bamboo, which is a nightmare. i had to break up the root-ball with a pickaxe to be able to rip out clumps. anyway as i swing down with my pickaxe i poke my eye on a bit of bamboo. without goggles. i went clubbing that night looking like a maralyn manson fan

No broken bones, nor tooth for my part. I did do free-running for two years, but after my friend broke his arm we all stopped. I have no damn idea what the most serious injury I've been through is, because everything is so low it's impossible to compare them to each-other and say "this is definitely the worse". I've once cut my finger about half-way through, (just under the nail, about half a centimeter from it), but it didn't even require a hospital visit.

So yeah, sicknesses are the only things I've had to deal with.

Let's see.

As far as broken bones go:
  • Almost every finger. Definitely both thumbs while playing basketball. Got my right ring finger slammed in a car door in high school.
  • Dropped a car battery on my foot and broke a few bones there.
  • Smashed my hand on a metal doorframe at work. I didn't go to the doctor but I am 95% sure there was a broken bone in there somewhere.
  • When I was ~10 my brother threw a toy at my face breaking one of my front teeth in half.
Other assorted injuries:
  • I dislocated my left shoulder 5 times before I had surgery on it. And no, it wasn't like Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon; I had to go to the Emergency Room and get knocked out to get it fixed. My brother took me once and said they wrapped a sheet around my waist, the doctor pulled one way on my arm while the nursed pulled the other way on teh sheet. Glad I was alseep for that.
  • Crashed a bicycle and seperated my right shoulder. Eventually had surgery on that shoulder too.*
  • Had a pretty good hyperextension in one of my knees while playing American football.
Now the just stupid ones:
  • I was working as a cook and stabbed a kitchen knife almost all the way through the plam of my hand. It was crazy busy and I was trying to get the pit out of an avocado half. The damn thing would NOT come out and I made the brilliant decision to hold the avocado in my left hand and stab the knife into the pit of the avocado REALLY hard so I could pull it out. Of course I missed the pit and the soft flesh of the avocado didn't slow the knife down at all.
  • When I was youg and stupid a friend and I went to see his girlfriend play an intramural volleyball game, it was indoors on a hardwood basketball court. We ended up sitting on the wrong side of the gym, so we decided at a break we would run across the court, slide under the net and join our friends on the other side. My buddy did a baseball slide (on his hip) and I went head first. Of course I miscalculated and landed chin first on the floor, splitting my chin wide open. I still have a ~2" scar on my chin from that one.*
  • Dropped a pot of boiling water on my bare foot while trying to cook noodles.*
*Alcohol may have been involved.
