The direction of Skyrim Modding

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 11:00 am

Sure I did and the next playthrough will be the exact same outcome.

And like I pointed out the dungeon makes little sense if you do it without being sent by the guy at whiterun.

So I discovered a dragon shout and it makes no sense to my character who had not yet started the main quest.

I think you're asking for too much. A quest is a quest. If you do the same quest on a different playthrough, expect more or less a similar sort of deallio.

But anyways we're getting off topic :P

Skyrim has only been out a little over half a week, and you're talking about the direction modding is going? This is a joke, right?

What is the topic again?

As I posted above there are only a small handful of mods that even address level scaling on a global level in Oblivion and even less for Fallout3, while there is a mountain of mods that add new gear. Just a huge amount of those mods.

So I'm advocating a method by which scaling overhauls are less conflicting than past games. Which would make them more compatible with the loot mods that will be arriving by the truckload in short order.

I will disagree with the OP on this.

I think there's going to be plenty to fix with Skyrim before adding new content. The "Radiant" AI is a joke, level scaling is better but still bad, some skill progression and character builds are unbalanced, the UI is one of the worst in modern PC games, the list goes on.

I, for one, very much prefer unscaled gameplay to scaled. To me, Oblivion deserved none of the high ratings it got until mods like OOO/TIE came out. I thought it flat out svcked before those mods. Skyrim is better, but the ugly effects of scaling are still there, and they piss me off, because I just don't like it.

Why I don't like it:
The earlier post about how the game is built to revolve around the player is dead on, this is in no way realistic. I want a world simulator, not some fantasy arcade program that attempts to "regulate my challenge level".

Although the scaling is improved over OB, the underlying defects inherent to the system are still there. You can still come back to old locations and find new enemies that suddenly are much stronger. And the fact that you can run into basic enemies that are more powerful than dragons (like the bandits another poster in this thread mentioned) is something I find completely ridiculous and immersion breaking. It's the same concept as with the items in stores, dungeons, and other things you'll see. You'll find all sorts of argument on the subject in various threads.

Bottom line is this: Level scaling will always break immersion and sacrifice realism at some level.

A little off topic I know, sorry. Rant over.

No offense meant to the OP, and none taken. I understand where you are coming from. I love new content. I just want to point out that there are loads of people like myself who are more excited about fixing the main game than adding content, especially those of us who are jaded by Bethesda's reputation from games like Oblivion and Fallout 3. And we will focus on the fixes first.

I enjoy modding and am looking to add content for my own game when the CS is released - if the quality is good I'll release - I like the texture mods - hopefully another mesh maker like Nioliv will come along and release some blank clothes meshes that can get textured.

No, i completley disagree. I feel that the lack of classes and attributes hav had a detrimental effect on how i play. Because of this, i am forced to neglect non combat skills such as smithing or sneaking so i dont level up, because id be unable to take on levelled enemies if i did level without increasing combat skills. Also, i dislike the removal of attributes for obvious reasons and would love mods that added them back into the game.

Mod what you want to mod.
Download what you want to download.
Request what you want to request.

I can't tell someone else, "No you don't really experience the game like that, you actually experience it like this."
Well, I can, but it won't do any good.

I can't agree with people saying that level scalling is better than in Oblivion. In theory it is, as the world didn't scale with you to the same extent, but there is another factor: in Skyrim all the skills are mayor. In Oblivion there were skills you could improve without fear of gaining levels and making the world do the same, but in skyrim all skills count.

I think this makes Skyrim level scalling even worst than the Oblivion one. On the other hand, this time the problem can be solved by an aditional way, making some of the skills not increasing character level.

Yeah, I think with the general better feel of the game mechanics, Mods will -on the whole- gravitate more towards fun and silly stuff instead of being all "HNNNNG GOTTA FIX THIS!"

There will be mods of that nature, but maybe not on the scale of FCOM.

...Oh, and of course, there will be porm mods eventually.

No, no, no, no, no, no, y'all need to focus on 1 thing and 1 thing alone: Arena and Arena Faction. There can't be a TES game without an Arena, mustn't be, can't be, shouldn't be!

Must have, must be! NAO! PRONTO!
