Mountain climbing. Here is a rock, at perhaps, a 40 degree angle. I'm sliding down it slowly. I can't climb up. I can't jump. Now I just run my way down to the bottom, probably falling because my feet lift off the mountain thinking I'm on a flat surface. And here is a ledge lower than my shoulders; in reality, I could pull myself up with ease. In the game, I'm a lightly armored blademaster with minimal weight on my back and wearing gloves. I can't climb it.

I know the Elder Scrolls have never done climbing like this. But, if, just if, we had climbing like in Assassin's creed, now that would be great.
+It encourages us to use roads. -Roads svck, they are covered in trolls, bears, bandits, and thugs. Also, I like being exposed to the wild, making my own trails, but I hate not being able to climb a shoulder-high rock.

"The modders will do it." -doubt it.

This is the #1 thing that annoys me in Skyrim.

Pretty sure you'd be able to climb that rock if you were in High Rock.

Get on a horse.

Makes travel boring, you're prone to attack, horses are the most unrealistic thing ever.
Here's me sitting on a ninety degree cliff face, holding onto my horse reins lightly. All good here!

Play minecraft. You could just level the rock then. But OT, that's why part of my roleplay is a mountain climber, so I have an excuse not to use roads.

I use a console command to increase my jump height slightly. Not too much... but just enough that I can scale steep slopes which would normally feel like an invisible wall.

Best title I have ever read...That is all.

It would be awesome if we could climb, but very unlikely unless it was like the forging, a animation in certain places; it probably wouldn't be good enough to implement.

This has got to be the dumbest argument that keeps getting posted. Find a road or a less sheer surface and climb that way. A horse is also a good idea. Then proceed to stop arguing here. We can't (and most of us won't) do anything about it.

Just a little side note- you don't use the reins for balance OR holding on to a horse. They are only meant to give signals to a horse, and a good rider only very lightly uses them. Otherwise you are cranking on the poor horse's tongue, jaw, and mouth-roof with a piece of metal, which is pretty messed up.

you balance on a horse using your core muscles. If you have to grip, you use your thighs, and on a steep incline you'd lean and if need be grip with your thighs, but most of the time it's a matter of moving with the horse and keeping yourself centered and balanced.

I would love to be able to jump higher, and have an acrobatics skill... or be able to haul myself up on ledges. They probably decided that was too complicated or too game-breaking though. Meh, maybe someone will fix it.

That....or maybe a poignant highlight of the absurdity in Bethesda's design....

Evey, I can grip a horse with my thighs as hard as I want, but I will never sit on a ninety degree surface without falling off - and I'm not kidding. I have been on ninety degree surfaces with a horse.

Furthermore, how is the horse staying on such surface?

Honestly I find it annoying as well but in reality, I think there is much more of a chance of getting stuck when doing stuff like that. I dont like the horses either but if I know I plan on climbing I just grab a horse. Although there are some parts where we should easily be able to climb rocks but I noticed we can climb grass/snow but not rock. Its probably easier for them to do it that way rather than going through every part of rock in the game deciding which we can be climbing. I'd bet money if they had 5 years to make this game, they'd do it, they probably arent unaware of this.

Assassin's Creed seemed to do it pretty well.
Skate 2 set any object with certain properties have certain behaviors. You could grind any surface that was grindable in that game.

Cast a levitation spell or drink a levitation potion. If you are a warrior or thief who refuses to use magic and potions then level up that acrobatics skill... :bolt:

So one of the most basic RPG skills, Climb Walls, is non-existant in this world? Must make things really easy for the local guards...

"So, where do you think that Thief has gone? Should we search outside the gates?"

"No need. Everyone knows you can't go over the walls. All we have to do is guard the gate and he cannot escape!"

Tsk.

I just ordered the game, based on Leo Laporte's recommendation on his radio show today...it should get here around tuesday-ish. Since they didn't implement a climbing skill, I don't suppose I should bother experimenting with, say, an innocent looking waif, who disguises herself as a boy when thieving to keep from getting a criminal reputation? Or is there a functional disguise skill?

Well the existence of magic spells shouldn't negate nonmagic alternatives. I mean there are cat-men in the game, logically they should be great climbers...

In Daggerfall, you could climb. You could go straight up a city wall if you really wanted to.
