The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has infinite quests, says Howard

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 4:57 am

I don't think infinite quests was the end goal, but rather a stop-gap. Infinite quests means infinite loot, and it also gives us something to do between DLCs. It's not actually meant to last forever; just something to allow for leveling between Main Quests, or Testing New Spells, or Gathering Components, or whatever. Waiting for a Dungeon to respawn is never fun.

Also, Bethesda has a precedent of creating vast amounts of content. I don't think we need to worry about repetitive auto-generated quests, unless that's all you do in game for long periods of time.

I played Oblivion over 300 hours easy. I never even did all the quests on that game. As far as a I can tell.

This would be far from the first game with randomly generated quests... so this isn't exactly a technological breakthrough. Even in the TES series -- Daggerfall made extensive use of em, IIRC (dunno about arena).

However, a random quest is not necssarily a bad quest, and I'm all for content that pushes you to explore every corner of the world. A generic quest that takes you to a new place or to interaction with new NPCs will still be interesting to play, especially to the extent that NPC and enemy AI is rich enough to make for some "emergent gameplay", as the indusrty calls it, that is, interesting unscripted events.

So, yeah -- good news as far as I'm concerned, provided of course it's well-executed ;) And even if it ISN'T -- if there's a system in place, then modders should be able to make new random quests as well as new scripted ones, which could be an interesting challenge!

Pretty obvious choice to have infinite quests like in TES2. Came up in suggestions threads about a thousand times.
But unlike TES2, TES5 is moddable and therefore the quests won't get boring. Big yippee everyone!

Well... Randomly generated assasination quests will end when there's no-one else to kil... The last quest will be when the questgiver of the DB says "Kill me, Dovahkin!"

And once it becomes repetitive you can start a new character and enjoy more repetition! :D

Honestly, I don't see the appeal to "generated quests".
If they'd taken that time they spent on developing it to develop 5 more fleshed out real quests then I'd be happier.

So infinite quests!
Yay!
Not.

You mean, it won't be like this all the time?

"NPC #___ says to player: HELP! My ____ was stolen by a _____!!!! Please, go into Dungeon # ______ and get it back for me!!!! I'll give you this _____ as a reward if you return it to me!"

______ = insert random variable.

You have no trust for the modding community? Why would anyone make a mod to add more boring into the boring.

Don't know what you mean. I didn't use the word 'now'. You don't need to get everything 'now'.

I just hope whatever the system is, it doesn't just send you into Dungeons all the time to slay some bad guy to get an item back.

I'd like special character-based quests too - like "Break into this house." Or "Assassinate this guy, but make it look like so-and-so killed him".

I like political intrigue quests just as much as, if not more than, the standard Kill or Fed-Ex quests.

Infinity can only be achieved through repetition of a set pattern. I'm not very excited about the "infinite" quests. I'll take the ones that were actually crafted by people, thanks.

Let me introduce you to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaitin%27s_constant. Infinitely many digits where any subsequence cannot be described by any pattern shorter than the subsequence itself. Dwemer may be involved.

[edit]

To clariry:
I don't like it when PC users speak about mods and modding like it's a given for every TES/Fallout player.
For two thirds of the fanbase, it isn't.

This article is very interesting and the concept of endless gameplay is pretty ambitious. I'm sure there will be some repetition but it will be neat to have the quests take you to unexplored areas of the map where there could be more quests.

I don't really understand how anyone can complain seeming as the 'infinite' quests haven't been used as a substitute for side quests. There will still be the numerous and colourful side quests of the old game, so the fact that the infinite ones could become boring and repetitive is a slightly null point as they are used only as an addition to the gaming experience. That is to say there is no way they could actually make the game worse if you take into account the fact that they send you to dungeons you haven't explored before, with enemies of a challenging level you haven't encountered before and of course the fact that you don't really have to accept them.

Those things are of course finite but the claim TH was making wasn't that the game had infinite numbers of amazing in-depth quests, just that there was a system in place that could (if you wanted) give you further/complementary play through structured quests that allowed you to explore areas you may not have previously visited.

I'm not necessarily complaining about this feature being in the game.
I'm just saying that I don't see the point to it and think it will get repetitive sooner rather than later.
