The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has infinite quests, says Howard

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 7:48 pm

Game director Todd Howard has already mentioned that Skyrim will have unlimited dragons, now he's said to Wired that there will be infinite quests, too.

There's a series of scripted quest lines, of course, which will follow the main plot and a number of subplots like those belonging to Skyrim's various guilds and The Dark Brotherhood, but once you've completed these, Howard says that the Radiant storytelling system will continue to generate tasks. These can involve stealing gems for the thieves guild, or assassinating NPCs for the Dark Brotherhood.

“The vibe of the game is that it’s something that you can play forever,” Howard said to Wired.

Howard says that these randomly generated quests are designed to lead players into interesting parts of the world they haven't visited before. Even major quests will have randomised components that will send players to unvisited areas.

“The world is probably the one thing that sets apart from other games,” he said. “It feels really real for what it is … It’s just fun to explore.”

He adds that Bethesda have learned a lot from Fallout 3, where they challenged themselves to fill a blasted wasteland with dozens of interesting tidbits and unique areas to discover.

The infinite quests are sure to boost the projected amount of potential play time from "300 hours" to "the end of time", which is going to do terrible things to our productivity when Skyrim unlocks on Friday. You can pre-load Skyrim right now on Steam and Direct2Drive.

Infinity can only be achieved through repetition of a set pattern. I'm not very excited about the "infinite" quests. I'll take the ones that were actually crafted by people, thanks.

This is just what I needed to make sure I put myself over the thousand hour mark with one character.

And we haven't seen the DLC yet, though it's rumored that there's one already in the works and it's about half the size of Shivering Isles...which was about 1/3rd the size of all of Oblivion. So it's [censored]in huge

I still get a kick out of Oblivion, having played it for 3 years in a row now. I can tell Skyrim will keep me entertained for much, much longer than that. At least until the next Elder Scrolls is out! ^_^

Sounds good. All the hand-made stuff will offer hundreds of hours of gameplay. Then once I'm done, or can't decide what to do next I can just get a random quest to spur me in a direction. I can't wait for Friday!

The game is going to be great...but not because of this, because this is just a bad idea. Rinse and repeat of boring/generic random generated quests? No thanks, i prefer well thought out one-time ones.

I don't know about INFINITE number of quests, but very close to it.

Assuming they have 1000+ characters that can give quests; a set amount of 'scripted' quests, of dungeons and tasks for people to give you on said dungeons or areas - then it would have a near-infinite amount of content.

The chances of a second character doing the exact same radiant-story quest as a previous one is extremely slim, but it exists. Even an infinite amount of quests doesn't rule out the possibility of 2 people getting the same radiant quest.

It's just a pet peeve of mine whenever someone fails at understanding logic, statistics and probabilities.
Even if that person IS Todd. :hugs:

Good news and bad news... Because most of the time, infinite quests = infinite blandness~ Hopefully it doesnt end up like in Fable 3 where 75% of the side quests were pretty much the same thing... :cryvaultboy:

Red Dead Redemption had Unlimited Quests.

That's a far cry from Unlimited compelling content.

i read that article too and i am a little skeptical on this matter but it will be really nice to know once i finish a quest line it keeps generating things to keep me busy... my only concern is that these quests may end up feeling dull after a little time (but it is an improvement and a step forward in the right direction) i also cant wait to see if people will weave there mods strait into the radiant story if its even possible..... ofcourse i will never know as i am buying on a console...

the thing that really hurt oblivion was the void after completing a guild, hopefully rather than providing wondrous new story and challenges which would be great but is unlikely, hopefully it just softens the rather abrupt feeling like life had come to a standstill
