The first time a Bethesda RPG did not win GOTY...

Post » Sun Dec 06, 2015 4:11 am

The "people who just hate Bethesda games" conspiracy exists in your imagination. The game has an 84 on metacritic, as the 26th best game of 2015, which is the average of the most popular reviewers.

These extreme user scores happen for both sides. Many rate it with 10 others rate it with 1. You see only the negative scores because of those rose colored glasses. The *average* is indicative. You can understand that by seeing other games' user scores. The Witcher's user score is 9.1 VS FO4's 5.4. Strange how that game wasn't hated eh. Or all the others games on the list except just a couple of others.

Resources can't go anywhere indeed. And they chose a soulless voiced main character, over depth and rich dialog. If you browse the reviews you will see that's the greatest common gripe everyone has about the game.

And Fallout 4 didn't deserve an award, either. This game was not only a step back from New Vegas, but also Fallout 3 as well. It's sitting pretty closely next to Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel for being worst game in the series.

People that believe it needs an award should consider the following issues with Fallout 4:

  • Half passable main story
  • Bad pacing of the main story
  • The awful dialog wheel and it limiting the number of choices to four
  • Lack of meaningful choices in dialogs
  • Bad voice acting and the character animations for scenes that are equally as bad (See Nora saying "Codsworth, what's wrong?" in the intro)
  • Horrific game optimization
  • Lots of crash inducing bugs. Some people to this day still can't play the game despite having good enough hardware
  • Many unnecessary retcons
  • Bad game balance - You get a Power Armor 30 minutes in to the game that renders normal armors nearly useless.
  • Majority of quests being boring "kill X" or fetch quests.
  • The game just wreaking of being unfinished & unpolished and pushed out early so it could be sold to the masses for the holiday season

... And seriously tell me why Fallout 4 would ever deserve a GoTY? I'm not hating on it here. These are legitimate issues I have either experienced myself or observed others having with this game.

It's time for Bethesda to wake up and realize what Fallout was prior to them buying the rights to it and what the fans want done with it. Until they do that in my humble opinion they do not deserve any awards.

Witcher 3 is totally overrated, especially the World Design. It's such a 08/15 Fantasy World i can't believe it. Even Guild Wars 2 made a better World Design.

W3 is okay but overrateed imo. Hopefully this means Bethesda learned from this and will do better next time even though I doubt they will.

Forgive me, I know I'm a little late in my response (wow this blew up), but I wasn't saying that there was only one type of RPG, and people who act like that tick me off as well. Rather, my point was that when the same people who criticize FO4 for a supposed lack of RPG elements and then go on to praise The Witcher 3 as a great RPG, it's pretty damn hypocritical and silly.

I'm sorry, I should have made my point clearer.

As far as my personal tastes, Witcher isn't my cup of tea for a number of reasons and is a different game with different aims than FO4.

Everyone is acting like Bethesda made a crap game, but all the 8s and 9s and the huge sales disagree with them. But I digress.

A radiant quest is hardly a good example.

I've noticed that too. People posting that having a voiced character breaks their 'immershun' and stops them roleplaying. Yet, praise Witcher 3 with it's...wait for it....voiced, pre-set character, pre-defined background and rigid appearance.

True, but then there's also this. Sure, it doesn't stop me from playing the game or enjoying it.. but not gonna lie, kinda expected a bit more for a 2015 AAA game.

Again, courtesy of Bleak. But I am currently off to play some F4 with the Dialogue mod, so I'll see if I can screencap something on my own as well.

Disclaimer-In case you're talking about FO and not TW3 I apologise- To make that statement, something tells me you haven't played any of the Witcher games, or read the books.

Nothing about it was standalone, it followed the story it was portraying, had plenty of returning characters and tied up things from TW2, it was definately game of the year.

The quest in that game actually made you think about the decisions you were making, in this game you don't even get that feeling.
There are no real choices to anything that has been proven by a modder that reverted the dialogue system, I played FO3 up until 2013 from 2008, months at a time, this game I have to put down after a few hours eachtime cause I get bored, the settlement building took away from them taking the time to make actually towns, now everywhere you go is, clean and kill, even the exploring to me, I'm just not having fun when I do it, I love the settlement building though and have spent hours doing it, only to have the terrible A.I. mass gather in a circle and then have to constantly re-assign them, I held off for ages on going to DC cause I wanted it to be like a " whoah awesome" feeling when I got there, and it's a glorified Republic of Dave from FO3.

I love FO as much as the next guy but anyone that tries to tell me it was 7 years in the making is lying, even bethesda, this game does not have 7 years of refinememt and improvement over FO3, still suffers from the age old bugs they all do. No sir No way.

Anyone that says this game Deserved GOTY OVER TW3 is blinded by their devotion to BGS.
This game has so many set backs over FO3 and barely any of the improvements or variety from NV that could have benefitted the title very much.
I'm sorry I feel this way about 4 cause I was so looking forward to it as well.

I still play it obviously but for short periods at a time.

Edit- At first I myself couldn't get into TW3 and left it from the 3 hours I played release day, all the way until August when I thought " I'll give it a chance "
Even my Girlfriend was interested in the story of TW3 and would sit with me while I played to see, or ask me what happened.
That's crazy, cause although she plays the occasional game, she doesn't really bother with story driven RPGs.

The makers of Witcher, CDProjekt, don't have haters. Nobody has a reason to hate CDPR, on the contrary.

Bethesda has a boat[censored] of haters, most of them the old Fallout fans who hate that Bethesda bought the franchise.

Actually Fallout 4 critic rating is 87

You are looking at metascore only for a PC platform (based on 32 reviews) but in reality it has 87 based on 84 review

Source: http://opencritic.com/#!game/1508/fallout-4

Also game received most of 0`s and 1`s from users IMEDIATLY after it came out. Majority of people who hated it played F4 for like 1-2 hours (just look at negative scores on Steam and you can see how much time the reviewers played the game).

Actually, after having thought about it Fallout 4 does a very good job in terms of what gets you thinking about. Are synth alive? How would slavery work if they were human? What if they were looked after better even if never allowed their freedom? What makes Kellogg stop caring about things? Are the brotherhood right to use nukes again?

Damn, looking at it that way... Fallout 4 gets a lot wrong, but it also gets a lot right. The content is very VERY good, it just failed in terms of delivery. But it's there nonetheless.

High sales =/= amazing game. Considering most people pre-order and you actually have to buy the game and play it to know if you like it or not.

Spoiler
My favourite is when you tell Piper you don't want to get into diamond city and you get the exact reply as when you say you do

I don't care what anyone says. Nothing can convince me that is okay.

I'm really enjoying the moment-to-moment gunplay in Fallout 4 and exploring the world, but those screenshots brutally expose the shallow rpg elements of the game. There's simply no defending it.

Yeah, I hope Todd Howard does a little thinking before he makes the plans for TES VI, what went wrong in Fallout 4 don't repeat the same mistake!

Of course not - I only link them - everyone should see these and criticize. Not because of hate. The only thing I hate is seeing the company I admire and one of my favorite game series lower its standards, even by a little. As users and consumers we should let them know we want an improvement over this.

This whole thing should not be about FO4 vs TW3 but about how the series we love can be improved. There are some undeniable *facts* e.g. elements missing from the game or being more "streamlined" compared to previous titles. I understand some people don't care for them, but they should also understand that many of us do. In fact as shown from the reviews, it did hurt the franchise, because a lot of people care about them.

I also thought about making a video, but cba, someone else will make it eventually, showing more of these, but more importantly how even "seemingly different" options lead to the exact same reactions/consequences which is usually only a single one.

No, most people don't preorder. Most people buy after release.

So you're thinking the sales of Fallout 4 so far are all based on previous games like Fallout 3 and Skyrim? Then it means the so-called failure of Fallout 4 will tank the sales of TES VI? Hmm, we'll see.

If I was a mean person, I'd think you're grasping for straws by pulling out opencritic when everyone else is clearly talking about Metacritic, a site acknowledged by Bethesda itself.

And what's the logic behind "you have to play a game for at least X hours to be allowed to say any critique on it"? Wouldn't you immediately then say "well, you have played it for X hours so obviously you're enjoying it, stop whining"?

Right right, it's not like there's a community somewhere around the net that can easily be renamed "We Hate Bethesda" who believe they're very intellectual beings and anyone who likes Bethesda's games is an idiot.

Nope, such community doesn't exist.

I gotta disagree. It's more RPG-y than Fallout 3 and New Vegas in many ways. Mostly with the characters you can play. The new leveling system is so much better for roleplaying than the older system for Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

No. I love Morrowind but the game itself is pretty bad and annoying to play. I love playing Bethesda's games but I don't want to be struggling against stupid systems or annoyances. Morrowind was only amazing due to the modding community. (To this day, a Modded Morrowind game is by far the best game I've ever played but without mods? It's not).

Honestly, Skyrim is probably their best TES game to date (with Oblivion being the worst, except for Shivering Isles. SI is by far one of their best DLCs ever) BUT Morrowind has best story. They should take inspiration from both Skyrim and Morrowind for TES VI.

Honestly, both Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 are great Fallout games. Bethesda kept to the Fallout theme for both and respected the originals. They just created their own Fallout games instead of trying to copy the original. They did a good job at making sequels in my opinion.
