Egads..an ancient Shield-Thane has appeared!

Surely these must be the end days. You guys may call me crazy but I swear I saw a dragon the other day.

Nasty creatures. I try to avoid them.

...Okay, more seriously and back on topic. Now that I've actually had a chance to settle down and read this, I absolutely love it. It just feels so... Nordic. The flow and style of an old Edda, plus the clear cyclic sense of things coming through. Well worth the read. ^.^

Did the Nords "wake" into dragons?

Of course not, we're waking up through time, but it's all in a jumble. I spy:

The Pact of Chieftains
The War of Succession
The Wild Hunt's slaying of Borgas
Wulfharth forsaking Skyrim
The Battle of Sungard
The Mainland's Cultural Outlook regarding the Skaal

Among other things, but then the story changes every year. One has to look hard to see everything, which is always a hard thing to do. For example, last year's had little to nothing to do with dragons at all, if I recall correctly, but a year's a long time in the 'rim.

I certainly remember that I wasn't listed, but that's a whole other story.

By the way, when I said "of course not" that's Elk-speak for "that's one way of looking at it, but then I have to turn my head and use the other eye, too."

tl;dr.

That said, I skimmed through it, and I really love the feel of it. It's very long-winded, which really gives it that "norse epic" kind of feel.

Also, I like the inclusion of the Karstaags. Hopefully we'll get to see some in Skyrim.

Also also, has anyone counted to see if there really are 500 companions? ;D

I'm now imagining typical suburbia, white picket fence, gee-golly families and their little tykes, keeping up with the Joneses and all that jazz. I'm now imagining a family of Karstaags coming into this suburban paradise. "Hi, we're the Karstaags from next door. We're giant, hairy creatures from the old world. I hope you don't mind, but we enslaved a bunch of Rieklings to pillage goods and supplies for us. Have you met our youngest, Karstaag Junior? He's quite the handful. Got the strength of ten men already. Say hi, Junior!"

The references to old friends make me very happy. A lot of great lore stuff here, too. Although it could be my bias talking, I swear graybeards are dragons.

I guess we'll see that soon enough, Lady, won't we? Only a few months, really.

I want so badly to dive right into this right this second, but I'm not in the right mind-set for an accounting of Companions. Later, I will.

I lost count at 139. :( I'm never going to succeed at counting 7000 steps once Skyrim comes out...

Dragons or Karstaags, the star-clerks.

This is long. So far my favorite part is "Hgelhelm the Outcast who once married a snow drake as if no one would notice," but I have much left to do.

Baruhk of Baruhk - Baruch

Alleir/Alleirisughus - Allerleirauh

Every name with an N is, of course, an homage to me.

Haromir-ish is there, toward the bottom. I only saw him and Bauhk, initially. When I read Rohark's post, I looked a wee harder.

I have enough accounts for a whole crew. :teehee:

When you've got to make up 500 names, you'll look for inspiration anywhere I suppose.

I think MK must have whispered to the beer bottle that granted him endurance to write so many names, and followed it's advice for naming inspiration.

Word 2. "...the Alehouse Giant, whose woad-markings explained how to build these halls lest some demon make us forget and set us into the ire of a summerlong sobriety."

I mean, who needs that?

Haromir is the name of an Ayleid that Pelinal offed!

But it does sound stereotypically Nordic.
