The greatest video game..ever made?

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 3:04 pm

I am not saying that my personal opinion holds any weight..but in my personal opinion, there is only one and one only greatest game of all time. I just replayed this game for the first time in what seems like years..well, it has been years haha! It's been probably six years or so since I played this game. It took me a few days because I tried to 100% it, but I did it.

This game has literally everything that I want in a game.

-Amazing, poetic writing
-Brilliant game direction all around
-Not "good", but "good" graphics, IE, art direction, the way the graphics are handled, it is nothing to shake a stick at even though it's 14 years old
-MEMORABLE characters. I love and feel for these characters
-Climactic boss battles
-Amazing gameplay
-The use and collection of many "items" that make you stronger as you go along on your journey, making it a collection instead of a grind (like many games these days)
-A real sense of changing the world. Even though it's a decently linear game, I feel involved. I feel like I am the HERO of this story, and I am shaping the outcome of destiny
-Challenging puzzles via gameplay
-BRILLIANT musical score, all around. Dungeon music, combat music, the music involved with instruments, the music when talking to certain NPC's during cutscenes, it is pure poetry
-Interesting areas to explore
-Multi-dimensional and deep story arcs
-Overall, from the time I turn the console on to the time I turn it off, I am having a FUN time and am INTERESTED in the games story

I bet most of you can guess what game I'm talking about. Well, even though I know a lot of people disagree, I PERSONALLY think that the greatest game ever made beyond a shadow of a doubt is...

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of TIme.

This game just speaks to me on so many levels, the gameplay, the poetic story, it's essentially a love story through time. It's so great. This game proves to me that graphics do NOT make a game. I am having more fun with this game right now than I had playing Skyrim, or BF3, or LoL, or WoW, or anything. It's just pure, poetic fun. I know a lot of people like to jump on the OoT bandwagon too, and say that "oh yeah man it's totally the bestest" but never even played it on the N64 so you don't 'even know what you're talking about..let me assure you, I bought this game the day it came out in 1998, and I bought Majora's Mask the day IT came out too. I simply love the N64 era Zelda games.

I think the biggest factor for me in this game is the story, hands down. The poetic writing of this game coupled with the amazing cutscenes which are SUPERBLY directed, it's just great. The music played, the angle of the lens flare, it all plays a part in making every single aspect of this video game *perfect*.

So, what are your alls greatest games of all time? Please, share your thoughts and tell us why you think this. I'm interested to know. I know some will have different opinions than me and that's fine. I don't see HOW, because there is virtually nothing wrong with this game to me. It's a pure 10/10. It is literally (to me) the greatest video game ever made in history.

By the way: http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s320x320/394135_2825299347452_1108070656_32676155_1206561071_n.jpg? I got ALL the heart pieces, AND the white borders. I am quite possibly the coolest man alive. I haven't gotten all 100 Skulltullas yet..I just got to 50 for the heart piece lol...

The one and only with the best gameplay, the most memorable boss battles, the insane replayability value, is without a doubt Chessmaster: Grandmaster Edition.

From reading your post I was pretty sure that you were going to say Planescape: Torment or Deus Ex, and I was kind of hoping that you'd name Bloodlines. I leave this thread disappointed.

For me the greatest game I have ever played is Grand Theft Auto IV.
-Great characters
-Deep, personal and interesting story
-Amazing writing
-Very funny without taking it too far
-The game world feels so alive that it might as well be another character
-Sandbox environment
-Great music and chat radio stations
-Great physical control of your character
-Great driving
-Great vehicles
-Amazing multiplayer
I could go on and on, but this is why Grand Theft Auto IV is the perfect game to me.

I was originally thinking Deus Ex or Bloodlines too, but certainly wasn't thinking OoT. Much of that list I wouldn't apply to it at all. I mostly leave the thread confused.

I don't really see how you can say that. What about OoT goes against what I said? How are the characters not memorable? How are the cutscenes not well directed? How is the storyline and writing not poetic? Many people think this, not just me lol. I mean I guess to each his own.

The Ocarina of time was ruined for me by Twilight Princess, because I played TP first. I tried playing OoT last year on the 3DS and I just couldn't get in to it. I did a few dungeons and got bored, the reason? Because TP basically ripped all the temples from OoT. Forest temple, water temple, the fire temple. They were all way too similar and I felt like I'd been there before.

I absolutely loved TP though, the art style in that was mind blowing.

 I was thinking more a long the lines of matchbox racer for the PS1. Man, I loved that game!

In all seriousness, I have yet to find my perfect game. :( A few have been exceptional, but there isn't one that stands out as the ultimate.

Never played a Zelda game.....its not on PC.

For that reason, everyone has a game they think is the best ever......but I still find flaws in my favorites as future games have shown features it lacks.

For example, all the game in my favorites list are too different to compare.....but most people will agree they are great games.

List order means nothing....all these games are equal.
Best RPG: Morrowind, Albion, Fallout: New Vegas
Best Shooter: DOOM, Call of Duty 4
Best Racer: Need For Speed Underground 2
Best RTS: Age of Empires 3
Best TBS: Heroes of Might and Magic Series. 3, 6 and 4 are my favorites.
Best Puzzler: Portal Series

You made the OoC typo twice now, I'm not sure how. Anyway.

"Poetic" is too vague and personally defined to argue effectively, but the writing never stood out to me. It's decent enough, but most characters have fairly limited lines (Zelda games aren't oriented around dialogue or NPC interaction, anyway), and there's not much room for development. It doesn't hurt the game or anything since it doesn't rely on that, but most of the dialogue struck me as just, standard dialogue. Calling the story "deep and multi-dimensional" is a confusing point for me. Evil force wants to do evil stuff because that's what he's into. Heroic hero has to stop him. It's more or less the same story as every Zelda game, and for that matter, almost every game ever. The overall setting and lore of the world, while probably stronger than most previous Zelda games, is still not particularly impressive in the medium.

Cutscene direction, I have nothing against. Memorable characters...that would be easier to discuss, if I remembered half of them. Almost everyone who isn't Link, Ganondorf, or Zelda (who have about 2 paragraphs of dialogue between them) is a more-or-less irrelevant side character. The game does a good job of making most of them interesting for your brief interaction, but I would be hard-pressed to give the praise of "MEMORABLE" characters to a game where most of them are people you give or receive an item from once and then never see again.

Aside from writing and characters, the things on the list I didn't jive with were challenging puzzles and a sense of changing the world. OoT was probably the easiest game in the series when it arrived, and that was actually one of my main gripes after playing through it. I'm fairly sure I beat it without dying once. The cutscenes were fun, but it killed the mood for me when it dramatically introduced a boss who was dead ten seconds later, and all the compiled items I had access to would feel more interesting if I actually needed anything other than the sword and boomerang for uses other than opening doors and such. I can't clearly remember a single puzzle from the game, as opposed to one with much more puzzling puzzles, Lufia 2, which I haven't played in even longer. Changing the world, well, not much to say outside of "I don't see it". The world is changing because of the events you're questing around, you're not really doing any of it. Clearing a dungeon doesn't generally have much effect beyond maybe a couple NPC's who have something to say about that dungeon.

Note that I'm not in any way trying to say it's not a good game or that the above reasons invalidate good reviews or anything. I'm not going to downrate Tetris for not having a story, for example, and the Legend of Zelda games have never really been about story. I just don't think it really deserves the highest possible praise in those areas.

Touche good sir. It's definitely not as dark as Skyrim, (I've never played Morrowind) but I actually preferred it to Skyrim. It felt more vibrant and varied. Plus it actually had proper cities, as opposed to hamlets of 6 people and a goat.

That's one of the main things that kills my buzz on Skyrim, all the cities bar Solitude and Riften svck.

I haven't played Skyrim so I can't say much about it, but...that pretty well describes any non-city inhabited area in Oblivion.

Woops, sorry. I figured it was about the Halo Spartans, probably because there was an apparently random number behind it. But if you're referring to Laconia's Spartans all is well in my book, those guys were badasses.

It had the hamlets too, such as Pell's Gate (population: 4) and Aleswell, which admittedly dwarfed Pell's Gate with about 6 or 7 people. But it did have more cities, and Skyrim had nothing approaching the Imperial City: and people complained that was too small (I can't remember if Vivec was bigger, though I seem to recall running around and getting lost a lot more!)

I also preferred Oblivion to Skyrim, though: I found the latter was just a bit dull. Oblivion had its faults, but they were largely fixed by modders; I have a bit of a sinking feeling that Skyrim doesn't even have the potential.
