The Hunger Games Game?

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 10:42 am

I've seen the film and read the books. I think The Hunger Games has the potential to be an astonishing game. Consider this:

-Designing and naming your own character, assigning attributes and skills.
- Choosing which district your character comes from, each district carrying its own perks and bonuses. Perhaps include an unlockable district 13?
- Tutorial level in which you visit each station at the training centre in the capitol, where you can learn to set traps, use ranged and melee weapons, hunt, use camouflage, set up camp, collect food and water, distinguish between poisonous and edible food, sneak, basic movement and manoeuvres etc.
- Randomly generated, vast, expansive maps of all sorts, or filling in boxes to choose yourself what kind of map to play in, jungle, rainforest, forest, desert, grassland, wasteland, mountains, canyons, snow, water-based, urban etc.
- Up to 24 players online in short 20 or 30 minute games.

-In Single Player, games that may last up to a month or more whereby you must set up camp, sleep, eat, drink, hunt, survive and keep a save file.
- A wide variety of weapons, foods, clothes, armours and equipment. All with their own stats and attributes, perks and uses. E.g. night vision goggles, arrow-proof vests, camouflage gear, bows and arrows, swords, maces, clubs, knives, throwing knives, hatchets and axes, spears, daggers, lances and even explosives.
- A huge variety of traps, animals both aggressive and passive, Capitol input such as forest fires or draining water supplies to force contestants together.
- Realistic movement and reactions from the players character and NPC's (such as getting startled or frightened at sudden attacks or noticing smoke from a fire and deciding whether to investigate or not), a realistic sneaking system and physics engine
- Receiving gifts from sponsors for completing achievements or performing dangerous feats, e.g. killing two tributes with one trap. Or being punished by the Gamemakers for being inactive or trying to flee.
- Perhaps including a character level system, where you gain experience from hunting or killing or setting traps etc, and as you level up, using your character again in future games, the opponents also get tougher.
- Also, offline co-op and versus mode. This is a feature that is being excluded in most games these days and I for one would love to see it return. In my opinion it makes gaming a much more social hobby.

I think if even just some of these suggestions were included in a game like this, it would be a MASSIVE hit. Anyone agree?

At seeing the title I thought, meh. But your list does seem to make for a fun game!

It would definitely be cool, but considering the ages of the characters and the violent nature of the game, I can't see it ever becoming reality in anything but a very watered down form.

I honestly see it being an M-rated game that carries much similarities to Manhunt, which sounds good to me....but it would put alotta people off.

I just finished the Hunger Games yesterday actually. I plan on seeing the movie after my girlfriend finishes reading it sometime next week. I thought about making it into a game as well. It would interest me.

I wouldn't see the arenas working. The range of obstacles is greater than just physical and very few games translate emotional or mental threats very well. I don't think random arenas would work well, and the game would need a myriad of interesting things (we are talking hundreds) to find in them. Overall it is simply far too much effort for a developer to put in. They'd need the community to do much of the work. That kind of thing doesn't happen with movie based games.

Does everything need a game now, too?

There's going to be a Game of Thrones videogame, which has the potential to be a horrible game. So does a Hunger Games videogame.

Good point but perhaps keeping to the age of the contestants in the books would be something they could overlook and just have the characters as advlts. playing it off like the Quarter Quell in book 2?

Hmm I really hope they don't do that tbh....their age is such an important part of it for me.

If done right, It could be an extremely good survival-competition game.

For the character's ages... I think that young-looking and non-specified age would be the best option. (No kids trough)

The important points are:
- Semi-Random Thematic Arenas
- Engine Stability and Connection Stability. A Bug or a Lag could be the difference between life or death.
- Eating, Drinking, Warmth and Mental Stability.
- A good gameplay for the killing part.
- A vast range of animations (Jumping, Scaling, Hiding, Camouflaging, etc...)
- A vast range of skills and perks.
- A vast range of weapons.
- Average Graphics. (No need for expensive stuff)
- A fast way to communicate with your "competitors" in the game. (Both text messages and voice messages should be possible)
- Random supplies from sponsors. (They could fall everywhere. But they must be rare and precious)
- The "Cornucopia" Blood Fest.
- Immersion. LOTS of immersion.
- Something more. (?)

I think that with a good team it could be a good game for a medium price.

Not with Gamebryo. I think this would be better as a 3rd person game, maybe Rockstar, but their pretty busy with GTA V. And most games based off books and/or movies don't end up well.

Your list looks like it would make a really good game, if done right.

Either Rockstar or someone using Crytek Engine.
Bethesda could make some really nice Arenas and systems, but overral the Gamebryo engine would hurt the game.

That said, I quite enjoyed the earlier Harry Potter Games when I was younger. :P

Seeing as it'd be a movie game, it would automatically svck. It's not physically possible for it to be good. Also they would only make it T rated because the movies are PG-13 and they always market movie games like 'oh you like this movie, then you'll love this game' and they couldn't do that with it being rated M. And no matter what they'd just push it out as quick as possible to capitalize on the movie.

You know they were originally novels right?

Y'know, I could see that as a really awesome Skyrim mod. Or maybe even DLC.

As it's own Standalone game, It'd probably end up a train wreck. Unless done by someone really, REALLY good. (Bethesda, Valve, Rockstar, etc.) Unfortunatly, all the big companies are busy with their own franchises. :(

They'll still be more towards the audience that started with the movies, as opposed to the audience that started with the books. Seeing as all the hype about it only started when the movie was released not when the novel was 4 years ago.
