The Little things that make Skyrim awesome

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 11:19 pm

I was making my way from Windhelm to the Reach to take care of some CW business, and had a couple stops to make in southern Eastmarch on the way to finish up some favors for residents of the city. By the time I went west and hit the tundra it was getting dark and I was loaded down with loot and so was my buddy Stenvar so we decided to make a pitstop in Whiterun to unload some stuff and get a good night's rest at the inn. (Well, I got a good night's rest... poor Stenvar just sat in a chair outside my room, but such is the life of mere hireling.)

Anyway the next morning we take off across the tundra, forgoing the roads in order to take the shortest possible route to our destination. I see a commotion on top of a nearby hill, a mammoth charging and rearing up. We sneak around to get a better vantage point and also see a giant beating at something with his club. After they're done and wander away we go up the hill and there's a dead bandit. And I think, why in the world would a bandit mess with a giant and a mammoth?

Then I turn and see that the hill overlooks Halted Stream Camp, and now the mammoth and TWO giants are down in front of the camp beating the crap out of something or someone. The two giants actually go IN the camp and there is more crazy club swinging mayhem and then they leave. So we go down there and sure enough they have killed every last bandit who was outside in the camp, one of the bodies is actually floating away in the nearby stream and I have to run after it just so I can loot it in the fine old Skyrim tradition. But still I'm wondering what prompted the giants to go after them like that.

We go in the camp and that's when I see the mammoth skeleton laying there with blood on the ground all around it, and that's when I remember that this is the camp/mine where the bandits in residence also have a sideline in mammoth slaughter.

Apparently the giants had had enough of these lowlifes targeting their herd, thank you very much, and decided to go teach them a lesson. I happened along just in time to witness all the fun.

That had to be awesome to watch!

It was very cool, I have seen giants fighting things out in the wild near their camps when they are provoked, but I have never seen them take the battle to somebody else's doorstep like that. Maybe the bandits were out there trying to kill a mammoth and the giants killed one of them and chased the rest all the way back to the camp to finish the job, I dunno, but I was gobsmacked when I looked down from the top of the hill right into the camp and the giants were INSIDE it just going to town on somebody.

Cicero's somewhat annoying yet funny comments if you kept him alive. He goes back to the sanctuary and offers to be your follower. Oh, and two giants fighting five bandits, three thalmor, and a dragon at the same time, killing them all. Now THAT makes for epic video.

So I was out for a stroll in Skyrim, can't remember where or why, but all of a sudden a little fox runs out from the shrubs at the side of the road and stops right in front of me, just there looking at me. I'm frozen to spot staring at it, thinking to myself "look at how close it is, its so tame, can i pet it?" As quickly as it came it scampered away back into the undergrowth and I'm back to reality "Oh yeah its a game..."

I've had roughly the same thing happen to me, except it was a rabbit that ran across my path. I stopped to watch it, and a few seconds later, a random stormlcoak soldier comes chasing after it with a two handed sword showting "You won't get a way from me!"

I laughed.

ROFL that's especially funny given the number of times I've heard random Stormcloaks complaining, "I hope it's not rabbit again. I'm getting sick of rabbit."

Meanwhile some poor guy from the company mess is out there fighting the good fight to bring that rabbit down, dammit. And does he get any respect? Any appreciation? No. No he does not.

Yea those foxes are cute with a strong sense of survival never sticking around to get killed. Am surprised when a hunter actually bags one or some wolves make a territorial example out of one.

Was rushing through some woods and finally came out from some bushes into a road clearing and out of nowhere a rabbit ran past faster then the speed of buckshot. Definitely was a sword drawing fright. For a moment i thought it was some sort of furry big rat.

Another "little" thing that makes Skyrim awesome is seeing a Dragon flying above me and it doesnt acttack. Definitely adds suspense of not knowing whether am going to be fighting for my life or not. Great to see such unpredictable behaviour in something so powerful.

I like how I'll be out walking when suddenly I drop through the world geometry, or when the game freezes all togather and-- wait, what makes it amazing?

In that case I love it when the sun sets over the water and you can see its glistening reflection spread over the ocean/lake. Or when a flock of birds will rapidly disperse as you walk down the path they were standing on.

i like that the trees sway in the wind, and that certain npcs will send DB assassins or thugs after you if you steal/murdered something dear to them

I like the perk trees. I also like the trophy shelf in the thieves' guild. Being a thief has never been more fun. I also love how NPCs will comment on the type of armor you are wearing.

9) The possibility to shoot down birds from the sky

Seriously. Loved this. I was Ninja'ing some giants who I downed in silence. I then got bored and started firing of arrows, then I saw a butterfly. I thought, I'm a pretty good shot why not.

the two wings fluttering separately down to the ground was beautiful.

I'm fairly new to the game but the giants have to be my favorite. I don't mess with them and give them plenty of room whenever I see them. I tried to kill a mamoth once (I was stupid and level 8 I think). Sven and I must have been full of mead.
The mamoth took out Sven like he was nothing then trampled me too. A good lesson for me. Shame we can't have those in the real world.

Sven and i were hunting deer (a free, fun sport) near south of Whiterun.
I saw a few hunters fighting the giants and we decieded to watch. One giant hit one with his club and knocked him into the atmosphere. Then another. I tried to remember where they landed so I could get some free loot but never found the bodies that bounced like "bumbles" across the planes.

The fireplaces with their feeling of warmth and how they cast light and shadows.
The burning coals outside of dungeons and forts giving a place to stay warm in the blistering cold of Skyrim. Also like the smoke trails they produce.
The mix of stylish decor and stone castle vastness of the Jarl's castle in Whiterun. Truly fit for a nord king.
The calm of cities at night with their peaceful bluish evening glow and windows lit giving a sense of habitation.
Being able to play tag as well as hide and seek with the children while seeing their childlike responses.
The graphic visuals when capturing a soul.
Potions and how incredibly useful they can be in battles.

Also not realy something beautiful, more random but still pretty awesome, I thought. Today I was on the road near markarth and saw some wolves jumping around further up the path. Naturally I went to investigate, as i got closer I noticed they were fighting each other. By the time I reached them 3 were dead there was only one left standing. I drew weapons and... Stray Dog?

I also had the option to talk to it (it was not barberass sp?) I could only comand it to wait here or say "time to go home boy" I chose this and it said your dog returns home. I have yet to return to breeze home, have i just adopted a new pet? I already have Lydia squatting in my bedroom eating all my bread :/

I was chasing bugs for potions and was having a bad day at the same time!!! Had been killed 4 times by random encounters with this, that and the other thing and then finally out of the blue a dragon plops down on my head without any warning and destroys me. After a reload it dawned on me that I had not saved in 2 hours since the fight before the dragon and had lost all my hard work in the process :stare:, so I decided to take my frustration out on a butterfly. I mad a couple of swings at the butterfly to no avail :swear: then finally I made one more swing at the dam thing and wouldn't you know it I cut it in twine! Two blue wings hit the dirt! So I try again and to my surprise, you are able to kill the bugs with your weapon instead of trying to run after em and catch em. Shooting em with a bow works as well, so now I've developed a new bad habit of wasting arrows trying to shoot bugs out of the air.

Markarth with its huge stone architecture and the intense political and class warfare going on in the city. You could make a whole game or expansion just on that city alone.

Or, you know, you could mod in the god Talos as a loyal personal follower and then take him to Markarth for a visit and then climb up on some terrace overlooking the interior of the city and then summon your newfound faithful dragon underling and then shoot that annoying Vigilant of Stendarr guy right smack in the head with an arrow. In broad daylight.

NOT THAT I WOULD EVER DO THAT OF COURSE.

But that city is ripe for a good old-fashioned purging, is what I'm sayin'. :P

Happened to me a few times. But now that I have an evil mage build... well... it doesn't take long for me to go Emperor Palpatine on his @ss! I almost always get a killcam for it too. Yippee!

After about 180 hours of playing I'm still seeing new things in the game. The other day I was wandering through the wilderness and had just killed a Wolf. Up ahead I thought I saw another one, chasing down and killing a Skeever, but when I got up to it it wasn't a Wolf, but a Dog. Barked at me a bit, ran off, ran back, barked some more, then decided to attack me!

And earlier today I was on my way to a Dark Brotherhood assassination. I stopped to see if I could upgrade my sword on a grindstone, and when I'd done I noticed what I thought were some glowing embers on a tree stump right next to the grindstone. But when I looked closer I realised it was thousands and thousands of ants, swarming all over the tree stump. Never seen that before. I watched them for ages.

Such a nice little touch.
