The Little things that make Skyrim awesome

I killed that guy in Riften who was guarding Mercer's house. He was there lying dead and a priest woman saw him, approached and started to pat his corpse. Now I'm not sure whether she was actually mourning or looting the damn body, but I don't see many games with so much npc-npc interaction.

You know those two random nobles you can encounter in the wilderness, who are heading to Vittoria Vici's wedding? Their surnames are Carvain, which was the surname of the Countess of Bruma in Oblivion. I love those little 'flashback' moments! M'aiq the liar is another example. :tes:

Perhaps next time i have to ask Cicero to doin' the dirty job for me

Came across a wife and husband traveling on the road whose house was burned down. I gave them some money to make their troubles more tolerable and they thanked me before moving on.

I've come across these two on every road in every hold at least once. It's always the same couple... apparently they do nothing but travel across Skyrim claiming to have lost everything they own to a dragon attack. They're either the two unluckiest people alive or else they're Skyrim's most accomplished scam artists. svckers like me give them money every other day out of pity, and they're probably just using it to feed their Skooma addiction.

Cool. I did not know this was the theme song for Daggerfall.

I love the draw-distance in Skyrim. Yesterday I was atop some mountain with my mage character http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad208/xenaclone/Image0085.jpg. She was in a fight with several NPC's up there, but had previously been getting chased by a couple mammoths and giants (long story). After the fight with the NPC's was over, I could see way down somewhere in the valley, where the mammoths and giants were still walking around, agitated, even though Beth was now something like a quarter mile away from them!

These are some of my favorites from this thread so far.
After I fully upgraded the Dawnstar DB Sanctuary, I went into the torture room and started mercilessly beating up one of the captives while using healing hands to keep him alive. After literally about 5 minutes of this he sad 'It's in a hollowed-out rock, south west of witerun, please leave me alone!' or something along those lines. This creates a miscellaneous task to find the rock, which I did, to find 2000 gold hidden in it. Who said Skyrim isn't rewarding?

The bandits. I LOVE the bandits.

The auroras.

The first time I saw Northern Lights in the game, I couldn't believe it. I was on my way to Bleak Flats Barrow at night time when they showed up. I had to just stop and stare for as long as the game displayed the lights.

A minor thing: getting stung by bees when around their nest, and being able to dispatch them (w/ a weapon).

That feelings I get that makes me want to explore.
Getting hit by a giant and flying 30,000 feet into the air (Have the fixed this? I hope not)

I hope they don't! That's always fun to do.

Yes... I love the way, on a clear night, th auroras literally light everything up like it's daytime. Very, very nice touch.

Is that true - I've only come across them once and I gave them money - I wondered if Beth designed them as scam artists! Next time they get nothing from me.

This + a million
Folk are sometimes so quick to criticise that they seem to just ignore this. There is an enormous amount of ambient content in this game - delightful, melancholy, creepy.
All sorts of stuff, simply walking from one place to another...

Reviewers are rushed to get their reviews out there before the competition. The log a few hours to test the mechanics and then write their reviews based on that. Many of them pretend to have tested the game more thoroughly, but, as you can see in this thread alone, that can't be possible because the little details such as the ones posted here require more than just testing the mechanics.

Yep, I think they just wander perpetually on the roads throughout Skyrim. I think I've bumped into them at least three times.

The first time I saw the auroras was just as the Greybeards called so I thought it had something to do with it. The second time I saw them was on the 7000 steps so again, I thought they were causing it. Later, I realized it was just a coincidence. :)
They're still one of my favorite sights.

Thats a pretty interesting take on things. I'll have to follow them in sneak mode and see what they say in private. If they are scammers they might get a bit of a hot foot as i send a fright their way with a flame spell or two.

Another thing that makes Skyrim awesome is tasting alchemy ingrediants and getting a positive or negative visual reaction as if tasting something normal or bitter nasty.

I usually taste several ingredients at once so when I leave the inventory screen, my character yells, "Kaaagghh" and bursts into green and red swirly patterns. Good times. :)

Not really a "Little" Thing, but the Dark Brotherhood Subcontracts.

They never give you any information about why these people have a hit out on them, but by spending a little time, you can piece together likely reasons. Here's a few.

Spoiler
Narfi: Klimmek is often seen right across from Narfi's house, fixated on the plot of land. Perhaps he wishes Narfi gone so he can claim the land himself.

Spoiler
Anoriath: Olfina Grey-Mane can be caught threatening Anoriath, who has discovered She and Jon Battle-Born are romantically involved.

Spoiler
Maluril: No direct evidience, but given events that Happen in the Thieves Guild, it's implied Calcelmo and/or his Nephew are not above taking the hit out to protect their position as the foremost authority on the Dwemer.

I remember the first time I encountered them, I had already started the MQ but my Dovahkiin was, you know, taking some well-earned time off from the stresses and strains of being Skyrim's premier dragonslayer to pursue some other interests. I had stopped automatically investigating anything that looked ilke a dragon lair, wasn't really taking any bounty work, because the Dragonborn needed a break. Then along came those two and so help me I felt *guilty* because, hey, maybe if I'd been a little more diligent I could have killed the dragon that burned down their home before they lost everything. I would've given them as much money as the game allowed and then some, since by that time I had plenty to spare.

I still give them money because I figure a little extra good karma never hurts, and if they are scamming me, well, I can usually afford to be scammed and they are the ones who will have to live with the results of their own misdeeds whereas my conscience is clear. But after hearing the same story from the same couple over and over again I wish I could just say, hey, here's an idea, why don't you two take the money I give you *this* time and LEAVE SKYRIM because clearly you are dragon magnets of the first order and should really find a less dragony part of the world in which to start over.

3. Bugs are attracted to Candlight at night.

Wow. Never noticed this one yet. That's awesome.

-The blind guard in one of the caves has a book on his table....with no words in it

Yea, that was awesome. Gave me chills, actually.

Well, in my new mage character, I've been putting off buying a horse, and I gotta say I've been enjoying walking on foot more than I thought I would. Sure, it takes longer to get around, but I can marvel at the world Bethesda made far better, not to mention be able to defend myself without having to dismount from a horse first when wolves start nipping at my ankles. To me, the point of The Elder Scrolls games has never combat, but instead giving the player a massive, living and breathing world to explore, and countless little stories to discover while exploring the caves, tombs, ruins, forts, and other features that cover the provinces. And to have accomplished something like that to the degree Bethesda has accomplished in Skyrim and in The Elder Scrolls in general is something that I feel has gone under-appreciated by a good portion of the gaming community.

The land of Skyrim feels far more alive to me than pretty much any other open world game; the only other game i can think of that comes close or potentially surpasses Skyrims accomplishment is Morrowind. Sure, Red Dead Redemption had a good sandbox, but it pales in comparison to the level of detail in Skyrim. I think that is the thing that truely makes Skyrim an amazing game. Anyone who plays purely for the combat and skips over most of the content in the game just to 'beat' the game is cheating themselves of the true Skyrim experience, and The Elder Scrolls experience in general.

Bats.
And the patches of oil on the floor and the fact that you can shoot the light fittings.
And the forced perspective thing when you sprint, and your breathing and panting.
And the creepy as [censored] Draugr voices especially in the darkness when one is standing right next to you.

Ages ago saw a small cart in the trees somewhere. Bandits later appeared when i got close and when I beat them looted an enchanted amulet. Walking back to whiterun i found a dead nord woman who had a letter saying how she was on her way to find some bandits who stole her amulet. Ive not seen this again anywhere but i thought it was a really great thing :P

Just reaching the top of a hill and seeing a huge, open landscape ahead. Seeing a mountain or ruin off in the distance and thinking "I can walk all the way over there and explore that" and knowing that there are tons of dungeons, treasures, encounters, and literally hundreds of little details worth seeing in the land in between. So often I get really annoyed at all the bugs and shortcomings in Bethesda's games, but it's moments like those that remind me how much of an accomplishment it actually is. I used to see mountains and things in the skyboxes of old shooters when I was a kid and I thought it would be the coolest thing if there was a game where you could just go all the way over there and explore, and it would all be as detailed as the level I was in. That sort of thing is a reality now, and Skyrim is pretty much the best it's been done so far when it comes to giving you a huge and fully detailed place to wander and see what you find.

"I can walk all the way over there and explore that"
Definitely this.
All the TES games I've played have had this - we've always just ended up being totally distracted by "I wonder what's over there." But Skyrim has refined it to the "nth" degree.

Had a dragon fight yesterday, the dragons swoops down grabs a guard and flies up throwing the poor guard skyhigh before he fell to the ground. Poor guy, was pretty sweet to watch tho.
