The Little things that make Skyrim awesome

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 8:12 pm

What I love about Skyrim..this entire thread. I played one character from 11/12 until I got my new computer in March (pretty much because I wanted to play Skyrim on ultra settings). Over 167 hours and there are several things people mentioned on this thread that I haven't seen. I walked all over; only used the carts when I was way overloaded. I can't believe I didn't know about the prison. Can't wait to find it!

Seeing a dragon flying around in a circle in the distance while walking the countryside, its roaring faint yet at the same time eerie and powerful. As Dragonborn you know you can't let this dragon roam free so you unsteath your weapon and walk/ride towards the beast steeling yourself for whats to come....

Skyrim is epic.

Ther are quite afew older posts about these details if you do a search. The lists of things is very long and incrediable in many ways. These details do add a lot of RP value.

Bugs collect over fish in lakes, ants on stumps, etc.

Oh man where to start :S

1) The shack that has fallen together due to a tree, and the owner of it and his name...
2) The abandoned prison
3) The changing weather
4) How wildlife feels somewhat realistic both animation wise and behavior wise
5) The lighthouse where it's owners has been killed, and there is a nice little puzzle for you to solve
6) The hunters taking a relaxing bath
7) How citizen in a city seems to actually live a life
8) Insects flying around
9) The possibility to shoot down birds from the sky
10) How dungeons and nature feel like they have been put there with attention to detail rather then had a script just placing them in the area
11) The mammoth frozen in the Glacier
12) The bards singing in inn's
13) Children playing in the streets
14) Fish swimming in rivers and jumping in waterfalls
15) Treasure maps

The amount of small details that can be discovered is just immense, and it is one of the good thing about Skyrim. It lacks in certain things, but these small things just improves the game so much and makes the things that are not so good into something you accept for what it is and keep enjoying the game because you never know what you will find in the world.

These.
Also the little lines of ants on certain tree stumps.

I think someone mentioned it but the random events. Love just traveling around and having a thief want my goods to a merc telling me where her next contract is. Traveling by foot was so boring in OB an I'm so happy I can now go anywhere by foot and have exciting stuff happen along the way.

The eye candy of a world is an added bonus I might add. :)

Sunrises and sunsets. Walking up to two NPC's and listening to their conversation. Bards, chickens, couriers. Immersion! :)

Hello daisah!
Throwing a body in a river and watching it float down stream. It always amuses me.

Physics is one aspect of this game that i am constantly pleased by. It never ceases to amaze me how reallistic rigid bodies behave in Skyrim. Very well done Bethesda!

Having thieves run up and try to rob you, but then stop and apologize once they realize you're in the Thieves Guild yourself.
The leather vats in giant camps that you can harvest mammoth cheese from.
The seriously psychedelic effect of drinking Sleeping Tree Sap.
When NPCs spot a dead body and gather around it, making comments like, "What happened here?", "What a waste," and, "Is he/she... dead?" If the group gets too large, a guard will even come by and say, "Alright, now, everyone back away. Let the law handle this. If anyone saw anything, step forward. Otherwise, step away from the body." If you don't vacate the premises and remain standing there with your weapon drawn, the guard might even take you to task for your suspicious behaviour. Seeing as he's got nothing on you, though, he lets you go on your way, telling you to talk to the captain of the guard if you 'recollect anything about the incident'. (The first time this happened to me I was blown away at how responsive the AI was to its surroundings.)
When hunters attack you for having let an animal free from one of their traps.
To name a few. :)

The enchanted weapons which allow my heavy melee Orc warrior to enjoy some spooky magic while not being a magic user.

When Dragons die and all the colorful effects which occur. As well as the cool looking Dragon bones that are left over with some exciting loot.

How different night and day are feeling very true to their nature.

Ice wraiths. Its like seeing an Irish banshee howling a siren song of death upon the winds.

The underwater effects. Love the realistic blur and swimming up to some patch of sea weed in the deep briney green of a vast lake.

How incredibly easy it is to roleplay being hungry and thirsty without using a mod. I always brought a ton of ingame food and before i know it i've eaten all the food by eating every three to five hours to simulate hunger and thirst. I also usually drink something after combat.

The ability to use mods and or create them to make Skyrim even more like what we want it to be. Some how Modders always come up with something that fits in with the game world so perfectly.

Hmmmm.....Probably the birds in the sky. Maybe the waterfalls. I loved the waterfalls by cheydinhal in oblivion. Glad to see they brought them back in force.

I loved Cheydinhal, all the weeping willows and the stream through town...it was my favorite oblivion town.

What I love though?
The whole city of Markarth. Love its waterfalls and desgin.
The underwater dungeon in the lake next to riverwood (near lady/lover stone in the middle of the lake).
Teaming with a Hagraven, Meekla.
Forsworn.
Light pouring through the roofs of some caves.
Fish in the rivers.
Hunting camps.
Stone henge like places in the world.
The new herbs...love the Juniper bushes that grow on the rock out croppings in the Markarth area.
Insects as herbs now!! Nice touch, still want my eye of newt...but alas I'll settle for eye of sabercat.
There are just those moments where you discover some place new, that doesn't even have a marker, where you just take your time and scower the area looking for goodies and enjoying the design of it.

On my way to a dragon today I saw a burning cart on the path and that was a nice detail, a little more exploration around and I found a house that was more or less burnt down. Explored it and saw a corpse holding a scroll of simmon Flame Atronochm with a summoning circle made up. Guess the dragon wasn't to be blamed for that house burning down. :)

Yesterday I noticed that I could see the water in the stream running under the planks on the path when you walk out of Whiterun. They could have made that little footbridge solid wood but it has planks and you can see the water. :tes:

Just gotta say that I finally noticed a little detail I hadn't noticed before in Skyrim. I had started a new character to try a new playstyle, and had just gotten out of Helgen, and was walking with Hadvar to Riverwood, when I noticed a small waterfall/rapids in the river that leads to Riverwood. Imagine my surprise when I saw salmon leaping out of the water up the waterfall! It was something i hadn't noticed before, but it was a little detail that makes the world of Skyrim feel a little more real.

So, now I turn to the community here and ask this: What are the little things in Skyrim that make the game awesome for you?

That reminds me of some old asian story. Something about a koi swimming into a waterfall to the top and then turning into a dragon...
I should totally try that and then deal with those elementary school bullys!....on a second thought...nah

In Oblivion when I was playing a mage, you could always see my face underneath the hood.

But in Skryim, well....my Dunmer's face is in a bit of shadow!

Kill cams for magic and bows. Nothing like seeing an arrow fly through the air to hit an opponent on a bridge as they go falling to their death from the impact.

Hooded robes. Now i can feel all nice and warm in the icey needle prickly freezing cold of Skyrim.

The domed buildings overgrown with lush plant life where theres a good chance of running into a Tree Sprite.

The barbaric savage beyond subhuman primal quest in every nords blood to romance and land a buetiful nordish wife.

Bards. When I play Oblivion, the inns just feel empty without them!

NPCs. People are always saying that they're shallow and whatnot, but I disagree. I feel like my character has friends, is part of a living community. It's the best feeling!

Consequences. Sometimes I wish there were more, but it's not like we don't have them. After completing the Dark Brotherhood, the guards are constantly making comments about it. It makes me feel like I've DONE something!

I love Skyrim, probably the best game I've ever played. :tes:

Been trying to think of some things to add that people haven't already said... hrm...

I think it's something of a nice touch that foxes and elk and the like will run from you if you get close enough; makes it feel like they are actual living animals in avoiding predators.

I also recall coming across Meekos shack south of Solitude, finding his dog waiting by the side of the road, following the dog back to the shack, and finding the journal of the recently deceased Nord who lived there, and reading how he had died alone with only his dog as a companion. Made me kind of depressed, really.

Same with this little campsite I found along the northern coastline between Dawnstar and Winterhold, finding a note the owner of the site had left telling how he was waiting for a loved ones ship to arrive, which was several weeks overdue, and that if the loved one found his note, that he was out fishing or hunting. And lying on the bedroll beneath the tent of the campsite was a skeleton, though several bones were missing.

I've always loved the walk from Riverwood to Whiterun, or, at least the beginning. I love walking through the town and then crossing the bridge. Always at the end of the bridge birds scatter from the trees and you can see the leaves falling from the trees. Add a pretty sunset and an aurora and I'm in heaven!

The music in SK is truly magnificent I should add.
