The Ocean Marketing Saga

I'm really surprised that this topic has not already been started. Now, I'm not one to normally start a topic but I felt that this was kind of missed so here it is.

The original text of the email thread can be found on Penny Arcade here:

It's awesome. Twitter dug up a domestic violence charge from 2008. Initially, he insisted that "it's called a [censored] hug," but, when pressed, said https://twitter.com/#!/oceanstretagy/status/151847259301101569. This guy is a hilariously awful person.

I do find it disturbing that people are going after his wife, although I'd be willing to bet that he doesn't understand that it is his "fault" that they are.

I've never actually seen anyone going after his family. The Internet Hate Machine is targeting him alone as far as I can tell. He just pleaded to Gabe from Penny Arcade to "help his wife and son" in a transparent last-ditch effort to get out of the spotlight, as if Gabe could have done anything anyway.

After reading those E-mails I'm fairly certain I could market that product better than he could, and I'm less than half his age. What an idiot.

Here a summary of what I can get from this whole thing:

A customer complaint the product is late, the PR was being a bit unhelpful at first, customer complaint again, then the PR became childish and insult the customer.

Mike Krahulik go a wind of this, join in the mess, PR act all hard and claim he know everybody, then Mike ban him and the company from the convention that the PR claim to know and the internet came down on the PR and the company he work for HARD.

PR got fired and the company apologies.

I've just finished reading through those emails so I'm up to speed now.

Just one thing:

Is this the PR guy? Seriously?

Not that I have any sympathy, but between these two things, that guy is ruined, personally and professionally.

I think that "ruined" is kind of an understatement.

He will be lucky if he can land a job manning a fry station at McDonalds once this gets thoroughly published. Maybe he can call his buddy, the Mayor of Boston?

He was interviewed by MSNBC a bit ago, here is the article:
http://ingame.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/12/28/9770514-chastened-gaming-rep-responds-to-internet-infamy

I like how he thinks that the increase in Twitter followers is a good thing. I only signed up to watch him burn and because in the off chance someone still decides to use his services, I want to be able to find out and boycott them as well.

Pretty sure that Twitter is fake. He changed his and then someone grabbed the old one. But apparently he still links to the old one on his site (which he created by plagiarising other sites).

He was originally using @OceanMarketting (note the misspelled word).
He then stopped using it and started using @OceanStratagy (note the additional misspelled word).

A new person picked up @OceanMarketting and has been trolling with it.
Additionally, trolls have picked up several variations of both (including the correctly spelled versions).

Yeah, the one I linked to before is a troll account. Sorry. https://twitter.com/#!/OceanStratagy is the real one; he just seems to be retweeting people who insult him. Because it's clearly in the best interests of his PR career to show any future employers how reviled he is.

I really couldn't have cared less about this "ocean marketing" crap that has been going on. A guy got mad at a customer? Totally deserves all this attention. Then I read the guys twitter. What a stupid [censored].

This guy is a (Derogatory term here). Just some punk who got a little to high in the business. Probably had a friend who worked high in the company and got him a job.

But people are taking this way out of proportion with threats to his family. I don't feel sorry for him but I do feel sorry for his wife and offspring being caught into this.

PS: I hope his defective genes did not catch on to his kids, and that they will not become mentally deficient and inconsiderate as well.

Well he certainly was a dike about it and deserved to get fired, there's simply no excuse for acting like that in his position, but I find it funny that the people who are posting his personal info online and [censored] think themselves better than him somehow.

This had all played out by yesterday, now it seems to be getting sad.

I sometimes wonder if people who have spent years arguing viciously on forums will be able to turn it off once they start working. Just once I used my "forum warrior" attitude in a work setting and it didn't end well.

There's a difference between getting mad and being short with a customer and then just being a complete [censored], the latter of which was what this guy was doing.

I'd like to say that this is a rare occurrence but I don't think it is. It just happened to catch the attention of someone that really didn't appreciate it and had a lot of 'weight' on the internet.

Want to point out that he have changed twitter accounts multiple times (all misspelled) and his latest is http://twitter.com/OceanDeepSea

The others have been overtaken and are making him looking worse. It can be easy to hate someone that’s as uncaring as the other twitter accounts make him look and he’s not a great person, but there is no need to vilify him even more.

I loved that he got smacked down. It's terrible that people take it too far with targeting family members (if that has actually happened - frankly I've only heard him say it and I assumed it was a lie to grab sympathy), but he deserves everything he gets (short of the deaths threats or any actual violence).

The people publishing contact info have done nothing wrong, seeing as the PR guy had all that info available publicly before [censored] hit the fan. If you act like an [censored] and put up all your contact info, expect there to be consequences.

The man isn't even remorseful or anything. He turned tail when he realised he'd picked on someone with more power than him, but it didn't make him see that he was in the wrong. He's only sorry he got caught. Same with when the domestic violence charge came up.

Except that he keeps on digging himself a bigger hole.

Speaking as someone who's been on the receiving end of terrible customer service more often than I care to remember, I can only say "good". This campaign may have been vicious, but it was well-deserved.
