Am I the only one how thinks Skyrim is the better game?

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 7:19 pm

So, way back in 2003, I got Morrowind, and lovvvvvveeeed that game. Played it for years. Oblivion comes out. I promptly throw up. It just... ugh, I don't know, I just despise Oblivion, So when Skyrim came out, I wait a little, get some recommendations. People complained it was nothing like Oblivion, which sounded good to me. I buy it, and now Morrowind has lost it's spot as my favorite game.

But now, it seems LOTS of people don't like this game, and that Oblivion was better. I do agree with some of the arguments against Skyrim, (it is a rather shallow RPG, and lack of spellmaking it blah.) but I think it's better then Oblivion.

Thoughts/Agreements/Disagreements?

Let's think. Are you the only one? Is every single post here condemning the game? Have all the games been returned?

No. Clearly you are not the only one who thinks that.

And clearly, there have been 19 million threads about this already.

Have to agree with bigredpanda here. Just looking at the front page tells you it that other people think Skyrim is better.

I like it overall better than Oblivion.

Mostly because one glaring thing I could not get past in Oblivion was the whole cryptic levelling/skills thing. Worst, most difficult, and unintuitive system I've ever seen. And I've been playing RPGs since Dragon Warrior 1 on the NES.

I've got some quibbles with Skyrim, but frankly it's pretty darn good. While I don't enjoy everything about it's simplification, for the most part it doesn't get in my way of playing and enjoying myself.

It's a waste of time to rank games, in my opinion. They all have their weaknesses and their strengths.

I'm 30 years old and Skyrim was what brought me to love the Elder Scrolls. I haven't played the others, but I read quite a bit about them and thoroughly enjoy the lore.

Skyrim has dragons. :deal:

You're taking me a bit too literally, but ok.

Again, too literal. I guess what I meant to say was "Who else agrees with me?"

Pretty much the only thing Skyrim does better is action and visuals. Almosy everything else is worse.

People who disagree most likely:

- Haven't played the previous games properly
- Treat TES games like action-adventure games rather than RPGs, and thus prefer Skyrim for it's action
- Love the setting more than previous games

...or a combination of all 3.

I don't know. I like to think of TES as half RPG and half adventure. I do like the setting more.

And there is no proper way to play TES.

Gonna disagree with you here. Not only do I like Skyrim better than Oblivion for many reasons besides the ones you say, but I don't fit into your three categories for anyone who would disagree. Except maybe liking the setting more, but that isn't the one reason I like the game more than Oblivion. While Skyrim has it's failings, both minor and major, it also does a lot of things right. Or in this case, better than Oblivion.

I have played every TES game at the time of release since Daggerfall and have since gone back and taken a brief spin in Arena. I love every single game in the TES series except Oblivion. I tried and tried and tried to like it. I tried mods etc. Just never could come to like it.

So, I think Skyrim is much better. It's clearly just an opinion and not based on anything but my own personal experiences.

Ah, Khajiit understands the reasoning behind the era and hero. Khajiit personally find the tale within the lands of Vvardenfell most entrancing, better than returning dragons... Though, Khajiit finds that perhaps the people in Skyrim speak more. Perhaps he finds the weapons strike more. Perhaps he finds the armor breaks less. Most enthralling, but Khajiit shall stand by his words. Neravarine shall be a better tale than the Dragonborn.

Having recently started playing Oblivion, I can safely say that Skyrim is hands-down the best for me in terms of the feel of the game. When I left Helgen and set foot into Skyrim, it felt like I was actually IN another world. And I'm still finding new things to explore. In Oblivion, the world felt ... Well, it just didn't grab me like Skyrim.

That said, I do love Oblivion as well. This is all just personal opinion.

Nothing wrong with that. I think I like Morrowind more for the sole reason that I never find myself out of things to do. Skyrim IMO is the first TES game that feels limited in its amount of content. Maybe it's only the fast movability (both fast travel and sprint button) that grands us to rush through every dungeon and quest in about a month, maybe there really is much less to do than before... Dunno. Never before have I "completed" an ES game, and now that I have (already! And some people in two weeks or so!), I feel disappointed. And I'm generally into deeper gaming and yadayada... Morrowind is also IMO the most immersive of the games, although Skyrim is the close runner-up there.

Bethesda have made it clear that every new TES game is even supposed to be very different from the last one. I think they've done superb job with this since Morrowind (from Daggerfall); that is, as long as gaming technology basically have given them a chance for it. Many don't know or care about this, and they concentrate on complaining that the new edition is nowhere near similar to their favorite TES title. -_- The only thing for me to complain here would be that I don't like the general direction of the change, from RPG to action game, as it so far has been.

But now, it seems LOTS of people don't like this game, and that Oblivion was better.

I think many people often need time to realize that a new overhaul actually can be good. This shows in all. Politics. Language. ("Those were the good times!") Etc. Why not the same with a major video game series? I think it's even claimed to be a western cultural norm or even a feature of our species: "At first, think negatively of anything that is new. Then, due time, admit that it wasn't as bad as you first thought it was."

I agree with you there.
All the arguements about about those that disagree with the two sentiments above is the three things you have listed.

I think SKyrim has a better world than Oblivion and it has the best fighting combat in the series but not magic.

What has made me like Skyrim less than Oblivion after the rose tinted Skyrim goggles feel off after 1,2 I started running into a lot of bugs more than in either Morrowind ands Oblvion, and the game is very shallow.

I got Skyrim for PS3 last November, played religiously for about a month, then got tired of it. I just started up again today (partly because I mainly play pc games and my gf gets annoyed when I hog the computer all the time; so I thought if I got back into Skyrim I don't have to worry about hogging the PS3 'cause she doesn't use it).

Anyway, I'm hoping that with the updates things are a little better. Or maybe I just needed some time away from it.

I love Oblivion, and I love Morrowind. I don't think Skyrim is all that different from Oblivion, overall; I thought the jump from Morrowind to Oblivion was much more pronounced.

I think most people who loved oblivion did so because it was the first game of this kind that they had played.. (meaning they hadn't played games like morrowind or gothic before.) Those that had played these types of games saw potential in oblivion but compared it to morrowind so it obviously didn't stand up. Now we have people who's first experience was oblivion comparing their first loved game of this type to the second.. Games have a hard time holding up to your first loved game. I still compare games to baldur's gate since that was my first loved game.. and nothing has ever compared to that in my mind. I am however loving skyrim.. but not because I'm comparing it to other TES games... It's because it feels more like Gothic. (another first played/loved game of mine.)

your not the only one. but i personally don't like it as much as oblivion. on another note as a console player, i really hope beth switches back to the computer as being the primary system they make the game on. then port it to consoles. thats just my opinion.

With 400+ hours in I think I already played Skyrim more than I did Oblivion. In Morrowind the hours had to be in the thousands as I played for years, so that will take some time. I loved all three games though, just like I loved Dragon Age Origins, Mass Effect 1&2, Half Life 1&2, or going even further back Baulders Gate 1&2, TES I&II, etc. Too many to name.

Right now, Skyrim is my game. It is entertaining me at the moment. I love it.

But enough about that. How was your day?

i agree skyrim is the better game and i personally like it a little better than morrowind *raises spellbreaker* mainly because of the atmosphere and the intensity of situations and when you actually bother to not skip dialouge or murder people because they are annoying or ignore someone because they are ugly then you realise there indeed is alot of depth in this game almost as much as morrowind. in my eyes skyrim is a grand success of a game and borders on fine art and literature as well. but i feel skyrim will swiftly be booted off the throne when elder scrolls black marsh comes around. also read books i cannot stress that enough with this series.

Yes...you pretty much nailed me down on all three there...

Though I guess the first one in my case should be clarified as that I didn't play them very much (except for Daggerfall), I do believe I approached them properly, trying to do what the story and game design was meant for me to do, and found it quite boring...

And...the setting in Morrowind is perhaps equal with Skyrim, I appreciate the non-stereotypical fantasy setting and I don't mind the older graphics...

Nope.

- Love the setting more than previous games

Nope. I prefer Morrowind as a setting, to be honest.

I prefer Skyrim as a game because:

1) There is combat in it. There wasn't in Morrowind. The sword swung, the game did some invisible number-crunching, and, although there was no rhyme or reason why, it told you that you 'missed.'
2) There is more room character development based on the character, not their stats. I prefer characters to be defined by what they do and why, rather than their power level being over nine thousand.
3) It is more realistic. This isn't simply a matter of graphics. If Morrowind was brought up to modern standards it would still be less realistic than Skyrim. Most NPCs don't move, shops always stay open, there were not as many ambient creatures, and there was no interaction with objects in the world other than picking them up. No workbenches, no alchemy labs, no forges, etc.
4) More NPC depth. In Morrowind, some NPCs had a lot to say. In Skyrim, NPCs have their own routine, house, and schedule - unlike many of the encyclopedia NPCs that populated Morrowind's towns, who just simply stood there 24/7.
