am I the only one not excited...?

Post » Mon Sep 23, 2013 7:39 am

you go on any gaming news site these days, talk to many gamers (At least, the ones I see at work), or even just go to your local gamestore to Socialize with the Sales People (yes, I go to my local gamestore to Socialize with the sales people.. they are pretty nice guys..), Everyone seems to be pumped about the Next-gen gaming consoles and news games being announced..

talking about "Hey look at these new features!", or "Take a look at the new Controller!", "Imagine how much better games will be by utilizing ", or "Hey, in the next title they are adding this feature, it looks sweet!"..

but me personally am not excited in the least..

I've been gaming for most of my life, and have seen how much the Industry has changed since the "Nintendo vs. Sega" days...

I remember back when Devs were willing to try things "Completely outside the Box", and some great Series have sprouted out from that willingness (Examples: the First Final Fantasy title was going to be the last game Square would make due to being virtually bankrupt, so they decided to just put up their remaining funds and make a title out of just random Ideas in their heads, and that Started up one of the top 3 JRPG Franchises),
or just try to take their series in an entirely new Direction just for the sake of it (Look at the Kings Quest games, for the longest time they were Point-and-click Adventure games, but then they Decided to try and take the series another Direction, Resulting in "Kings Quest: Mask of Eternity", an amazing Action Adventure title...)

Now adays though, Devs are try to much to "Play it Safe", keep giving us more of the same with a Pallet swap and a new price tag.. and are trying to hard to appeal to an Audience they know exists, instead of trying to create a new one...
Only real Devs out there these days willing to "leave the box", are the Indies and small time devs, which have created amazing titles and new fanbases (Think Minecraft)

however, looking at the next-gen consoles and their launch titles, I just get the feeling we are in for more of this... and as a result, I can't get myself excited for the Next-gen consoles....

So TLDR

Anyone else not excited about the next-gen consoles? and if not, why are you not excited?

I'm excited to see what kind of creativity will eventually come from the next generation of games... but other than that, not excited.

- There's still new games coming for out this gen that I'm excited for. (Dark Souls 2!)
- It always takes a year or so for the develpors to fully utilize what the new gen has to offer.
- I'll wait for a price drop
- I still play games from the 80s and 90s all the time. New doesn't equal best.

I'm not excited. And not just because I'm "Pee Cee mustard race!" but because the consoles themselves don't have enough for me to consider buying them. Back in the day, the console you got determined what games you were going to play. Now, most of the games will come out across several consoles. Why upgrade a console when I already have a PC that will be capable of running next gen games? Honestly, I think I'd rather get a Wii U.

The only thing I'm excited about is the new consoles are beefier, which means they have more allotted resources to give to games, which means games should have better graphics, better AI, and more and improved features, which means games being developed cross platform wont be as held back by the consoles as they are now.

More power to the game developers! That's a good thing, right? No longer will games be limited by outdated hardware, and that in itself is enough to get excited, even if I'm not overly enthusiastic about the next gen consoles themselves. I'll probably get the PS4 later on when it becomes cheaper and gets SMT games, and that is going to happen, because I say so.

I'll be excited when the kinks are knocked out and the next generation of the next generation is released in about a year or so :P Until then, I won't be touching the next gen.

For the consoles themselves? Couldn't care less. For the good games that might eventually get made? Hell yes. Well... maybe. If this brutal year of crappy games continues into next year I might go into hibernation until there is suitable sustenance.

Better frame rate and less texture load-in is the most exciting thing about next-gen consoles.

And we'll see how well the latter fares.

I won't be too excited about the new consoles until I have enough money to buy one. My excitement will probably set in as I'm on my way to gamestop to get my PS4.

I'm pretty sure they'll still do the 30fps thing. At least from what I heard last.

Not excited because I don't even have the money to afford them. But yeah, I'm good with my PS3. Might get the PS4 later, when they stop making games for the PS3. The only thing I'm pumped for are games, I just see the consoles as something I can play them on.

Takes a lot longer than that. Usually doesn't happen until the end of the lifecycle.

To answer the question...I couldn't care less about next gen. Not until Witcher 3 launches.

This. I've never bothered to get a console at launch. I always wait for more games that I care about to come out (plus funding/time/etc).

The current launch list for the PS4, nothing really leaps out at me to want to get.

But I am looking forward to it.

What I meant to say was less framerate drops. It's not super common in most games this gen but it svcks when it happens for no reason. But as uncommon as it is, me finding that to be the most exciting thing about the next-gen consoles emphasises how little I care about them.

OP, it all boils down to money. Often big game/publisher companies like to play it safe because if they stray too far from the box, anything can happen--like a devastating profit loss--So, doing what works keeps the business and its investors happy, at least, secure for the moment. Maybe, this could explain why when a new game that thinks out of the box and starts selling big, many companies take notice and follow suit to take a piece of that pie--like the Dayz game. In business there's always courage and fear because so many things are at stake.

Come on, they work in game industry so they're hired/forced/said to say so.

I personally believe in Steambox. Sony and MS are just two big trolls. Hell, they've been around almost 20 year but I cant say they've ever impressed me.

the only thing that impressed me was apparently the original Xbox's case could defeat a 9mm round

my hope for the steambox is that it lessens Steam's hold on the PC

Im not really excited either, but i wasn't interested before hand either. The only games that I am really anticipating are either Indie games or stand alone versions of mods for other games, the only mainstream game that I am looking forward to is Fallout 4.

I am quite apathetic to this next-gen console hype. Even if they release soon, what will be out in terms of games that I'll be interested in enough to buy on release week?

I actually make myself apathetic towards games I know I want to play but they have not released yet on purpose, so that the wait for them to release feels a lot more bearable. Of course, this concentration breaks when it's about less than a month away.

My point? I'll get a PS4 when Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy XV release. Then I'll get FFXIV and ESO sometime in the future.

I'm about as excited for the nex gen as I was for this gen, which is to say, not at all. Even the steadfast Counter-Strike series is being ruined by DLC and microtransaction items. It's horrible. What can the future hold, if DLC rules the world?

I'm not excited about the new consoles or the new games coming out. The consoles because they seem like they're just 360 and PS3 only +1 and I can't be bothered to spend an absurd amount of money for a console when it's not really that amazing. I mean the switch from xbox to 360 and PS2 to PS3 is pretty big, but it doesn't seem like PS4 and Xbox3 will matter all that much. Some say that the graphics will be amazing and bla bla bla and all I can think of is how it doesn't matter. The gameplay is what should be important and while the new hardware will improve some aspects of the gameplay it won't automatically fix badly designed games; It's still up to the developers to actually produce good games and the consoles doesn't have anything to do with it.

And the games because I've grown more and more cynical about mainstream titles during my life time. Mainstream games have deteriorated for me in a lot of aspects. 6 years ago I actually looked up trailers for new games on GameTrailers.com and searched for news about games and while I still look up news for games the priority is on indie titles and their DLC's/sequels rather than mainstream games. Mainstream games have become dumbed down and treat the player like an idiot, they play it safe rather than inovate, they turn franchises I've loved before into mutated freaks which I can no longer recognize, they're tedious and repetitive and finally they cost too damn much for me to bother with them.

Indie titles are at a reasonable price, they try to differentiate themselves from one another with unique ideas and gameplay designs, they have wonderful art design that is simplistic and doesn't require an enormous budget for top quality graphics, they can have fantastic writing because the developers actually care about telling a narrative which makes sense and if they don't have great writing their gameplay is the focus and manage to make sure that it makes up for the lack of a good narrative, they treat me like an advlt which continuously ups the difficulty so that I have to improve myself.

So what am I looking forward to? Hotline Miami 2, Dead State, Wasteland 2, Project Eternity, Binding Of Isaac: Rebirth, Starbound, Door Kickers, Underrail, Shadowrun Returns' Berlin campaign and The Walking Dead Season 2.

I don't really see a huge deal entirely. I knew new consoles would come and there'd be new things in them. Every game I have been excited about this year has pretty much already come out. Most of my favorite games this year have been handheld ones, too. I am a bit excited for the new Pokemon games, but I'll wait them out for a bit unless I happen to be out the day the game releases.

No, you aren't the only one not excited about the nex-gen consoles. I am unimpressed by them and don't plan on buying one. Unless something overly cool comes out. Hell, I didn't buy an Xbox 360 until 2008, three years after it launched.

Took me a long time to get my PS3 because when I was first buying a next gen console during that gen, the PS3 was at the famous insane price it had for the early days if its existence. I got a Wii instead since I could buy that with allowance money easier. I'm glad I got both, though. I waited until maybe 8th grade to get a PS3.

So here are my random thoughts from my POV as someone who hasn't done much gaming, but remembers playing Pong.

The industry has been long enough to figure out what the the public likes, so they keep making those games. Also, the industry has been around long enough to bump into limitations of creativity and technology. At lesat thta's what I think...
