The Purge

Just more proof Hollywood is running out of ideas and they've forgotten how to make a good movie.

Well, the idea is flawed because you give people one night of legal crime, then their bloodlust won't go down instanly. And legal crime, so that means [censored] which we all know will most likely be in i) which means that Hollywood still has no ideas and only get off by gore and six.

Crime is legal for 12 hours. Move into the government and kill all of the administration. Now you have a new government. Abolish said stupid rule. The end. And it could be ANY group. Now I'm the person you will hear the least squawking about terrorism, but man this is a bad idea for any nation. Everyone has enemies, and this just gives them 12 hours of free time to operate in your borders. Unopposed 12 hours. Silly and dumb idea is dumb, I can't believe the first youtube comment is "now the government must be thinking this" or something. God I feel so dumb right now.

I was wondering myself whats to stop an enemy nation just bombing the crap out of every military installation during this time.

Well it's just emergency services (police, EMT, fire dept) that are shut down, not the military.

Though that still poses a problem for an insurgent terrorist group.

The complete lack of emergency services would still give a terrorist group increased maneuverability, and if the military is making sure no massive terrorist act takes place it sort of makes the whole premise of the Purge even more pointless than it already is.

Another ultraviolent horror film with a silly premise that takes itself too seriously.

In other words, a likely candidate for funniest movie of the year!

It sounds like such an awesome concept but the whole plot ruins it for me... why does the entire movie have to be based around 1 man? I want to see what the rest of the world is doing during the Purge not just some isolated incident.

A better plot would've been if a member of the family was trapped outside or kidnapped or something.

I've heard some ridiculously stupid premises for movies, but this one takes the cake.

In this instance i assume taking the cake is a good thing because the premise sounds interesting... As appose to the other movies out there.

It's almost like this is a ridiculous concept or something, not only that but the trailer spoils that the people outside get in; that's probably the first 40 minutes of the movie rendered pointless.

Why is it the "Emergency Broadcast System" if this is not in-fact an emergency but a planned event? Much less what does this have to do with massive unemployment? Are the destitute just culled every-year? Maybe that's the twist.

Nope. I've no problem with suspending disbelief, but this is just idiotic.

The premise, and the trailer, were interesting until the group of psycho mask-wearing murderers showed up. Then it became just another half thought out horror movie.

People trapped in a house being hunted by masked killers? Looks like The Strangers with a twist. I like the idea of a once-a-year crime free-for-all, not sure about the way it seems to have been implemented.

I have a question about words or grammar..

Is the right word premise or concept? I think its agreed that the idea of one day everyone can break the law is interesting, so wouldn't the idea be the concept and the situation with the masked murders be the premise? Or can premise mean the idea too?

A premise is the background facts that lead the outcome.

Example: Aristotle is a man. All men are mortal. Therefore, Aristotle is Mortal. Both Aristotle being a man and all men being mortal are premises that result in the conclusion.

In the case of this movie, the events of the movie/the movie itself are the conclsion. One of the premises of the movie is that for a 12 hour period, all crime is legal. Without that promise, the movie wouldn't be possible (just like without the premise that all men are mortal, you wouldn't be able to definitively say that Aristotle is mortal).

Another premise (one I don't like) was the decision that most people are bloodthirsty murderers.

The premise of the story is completely idiotic. The fact it tries to take itself seriously makes it irritating instead of funny, robbing me of any possible pleasure this ridiculous "horror" movie could provide. The Purge is real, only instead of 24 hours, it was the two and a half minutes I was robbed of from watching the trailer.

What if they were pyro's and just started burning down buildings, which then leapt from structure to structure, and got way out of control and burnt half the city down, and detonated gas lines and got into fuel stations, so arson being a crime it would be acceptable during that period of time.

I think if this was ever implemented 99.9% would likely be non murder related crimes.

Like drug use, underage alchohol use, driving without a license, fireworks, poaching (I call the tigers at the zoo!) etc.

Edit: it would be an awesome 12 hour party though.
