The Traveler's Tavern III

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 1:53 pm

Come on in, there is something for everyone! :foodndrink:

We have such an international group here, I thought it would be interesting to create a topic where we can discuss various aspects of foreign culture and have an open forum for legitimate questions. Feel free to ask for translations as well.

A couple of guidelines:

-Respect each other *and* your cultural differences.
-Be careful with religion and politics
-Keep it classy

Just to carry over from the last thread...anyone have any suggestions for must-see places/shows/etc. in Hong Kong, Bangkok, or Phuket? I'm going to be there next month and I'm going to have some free time to goof off and explore.

I just woke up and looked over what I missed. I told Summer that the dish she was looking for was Poutine on the previous page before the guy she thanked, but I didn't get any credit.

*plays the world's smallest violin* :violin:

Oh well, I guess I'll visit the NV forum and see if I can help someone there. I have an addiction to helping people, you know.

Dont want to drag this into that direction, but I heared your government kept quiet about that, hoping people would forget.

Nobody would forget what happened, and we have hundreds of cities experienced worse over 3000 years of our history, it's just one plot back there. The place is still filled with people living normal everyday life. People still have to live.

While you have had worse, you still have the people who did that in power, still hurting/killing with no sign of change. It seems weird, people can just keep living normally knowing that.

Getting laid with some of the really nice oriental chicks here
I'll ask my girlfriend if we can do that. I think it's going to be an emphatic "no," though. ;)

Seriously, Ocean Park is the popular choice and almost always worthwhile. Many foreigners praised our airport, so you might enjoy just messing around in there before leaving the gate (tourist price of course). MongKok, Central, Wanchai, Causeway Bay after 7pm friday to and before 10pm Sunday always have the maddening nightlife every week. For food Temple street (tourist price). In Mongkok we have this crazy amount of food to choose from, they used to be hawkers in the streets but the government reorganized them to stick them back into real shops.
Thank you! That's good info. Nightlife would be good. I'd rather not just do what typical tourists would do. I've done quite a bit of traveling, so I'd like to see a bit of what the locals are into and one or two "touristy" things that are really unique to the area. I find that the places that are really geared toward tourism tend to be very similar in every place I visit, so I wouldn't mind avoiding those.

No. I can be adventurous, but I don't do eyes, brains, or digestive tracts.

Backpacking through western Europe after high school. Good idea or bad idea?

Very good idea.

Just keep your wits about you and be careful. And get off the beaten path, away from the soul-svcking touristy areas. :goodjob:

Yes, I will pretend to be Canadian.

Hate to get nostalgic here, but that reminds me of a time...

I was staying in Livingston, outside Edinburgh. I was coming from Glasgow, I think it was, and got off the wrong bus station. I didn't see anything I recognized and was completely lost. And of course the usual that comes with that situation: its getting dark, cell phone battery is almost dead, no one is around and even if someone was around, I doubt I'd be able to even explain where I was staying.

I start walking aimlessly figuring I'll find something eventually. These two emo 12-13 year old girls come around the corner. I start thinking,
"You've got to be kidding me. These girls are gonna save my ass"

I stopped them to ask if they knew how to get to the grocery store, as I knew how to get home from there and figured it'd be common knowledge enough. So they were so extremely excited and asked:

Them: "You're accent! Canadian?!"
Me:"No, I'm American"
Them: "Oh..."(with obvious disappointment) "Cuz Avril Lavigne is from Canada".
Me: "Who? Oh yeah...I'm a fan of Alanis Morrisette!"
Them: "Who? We don't know who that is."

I tried to explain that there probably wouldn't be an Avril if there wasn't an Alanis before her, but...they weren't interested. Wasn't gonna argue with them, they were basically preventing me from sleeping under a tree. Think I grumbled something about respecting their elders though.

And upon first talking to them my first thought was:
"Accent? I don't have an accent. *YOU* have an accent"

I remember that being really wild. You know you are a stranger in a strange land when you hear about your accent and I don't think it is something a lot Americans are used to.

It got even more bizarre, as they asked if I had any...well...it's what they call cigarettes in the UK. And it isn't a word that you can say without consequence in the US (or on the forum, I would hope). Some of you may know what I mean.

Anyway, it was interesting to say the least. And I'll never forget it. It's those type of moments while you are traveling that stay with you.
