The whole Lockpick skill tree IS pointless

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 5:05 am

So we've all seen the lockpick skill tree, how it makes locks easier to pick etc etc?

Well *spoilerz* (Don't want spoilers? Point is, don't waste any perks in the lockpick section if you're gonna join the thieves guild)

It appears that sometime in the Thieves Guild questline you get a

"Masterkey", or a skeleton key. Lockpick that never breaks. Doesn't this make the "easier" perks useless?

Another masterkey, like in Oblivion? Ah, the good ol' days of spamming auto-attempt....

No.

There's no auto-attempt anymore, you still have manually open the door.

Also, my warrior gets great use out of lockpicks.

Bandits do tend to lock up their stuff, too. :D

My warrior has never leveled in it, but I've personally managed to open every single lock with my own skill using my controller, the master locks are hard, but it's all in finding that sweet spot before breaking all your picks first.

There are also advantages in the tree other than ease of lock-picking.

My warrior has never leveled in it, but I've personally managed to open every single lock with my own skill using my controller, the master locks are hard, but it's all in finding that sweet spot before breaking all your picks first.

So the lockpicking perks are really there for the sake of the poor lockpicks that get broken...

Regardless of the skeleton key which I wont say anymore, the perks are pointless because lock picking gets easy once you get the hang of it.

Even without it, I'm rarely breaking my picks when picking any level of lock, and I don't have any lockpicking perks at all. If you just take it really slowly, you can usually pick any lock without breaking more than one pick.

Yeah, and lockpicks are cheap and plentiful if you visit general goods stores with any regularity. I don't have a single lockpicking perk, and I have something like 200 of them stored up. I usually don't even buy them anymore when I see them.

The perks are of no great value. Picks are plentiful, even without the skeleton key (which I plan to throw away if/when I come across it).

No auto atempt? Humbug!

1) I svcked at Oblivion's lockpicking
2) It shoudl be a character thing and not the player skill

1) It's based off of the Fallout 3 system
2) That's a slippery slope though, it can quickly get to the point where far too much is just a simulation

Yep, I must say I have had no issue myself--guess playing Fallout 3 paid off for something. That said, there aren't many locked chests anyway. Even if lock-picking was harder, to justify spending skill points there would need to be a lot more locked chests, IMO.

It DOES make the easier locks perk pointless.. How could they do this to us.. Add the skeleton key again? F*

After opening a master lock with like 20 lockpicking I came to this conclusion as well. Even without a skeleton key they're useless.

Um... well, I don't want to spoil anything, but I also kinda wanna correct the post...

The lockpicking tree is still quite useful.

Minimal spoilers, but tagged just in case.

Spoiler
You don't get to keep the Skeleton Key. To finish the Thieves Guild, you have to lose it.

Have to agree with you there, even at lvl 20s at lockpicking I was able to open a master lock without much problem so I don't see any reason for putting any point into it. (and I'm not sure about it but I think now the locks spots are at a fixed position so you can try and find the right spot first and if you break too many pick you can just reload and since now you already know the spot you can try with a better chance)

It all depends if the treasure hunter perk svcks or not.
Still, that's just 5 perks. I see no reason to go further than that.

Why did beth makes lockpicking and pickpocketing so lame skillup wise again? It was the same case in oblivion ffs. You'd think they'd learn.

It only makes them pointless if you intend on getting the Skeleton Key. My character isn't going to do the Thieves Guild questline, but he still has to open a lot of locks, that makes the perks pretty useful for him.

all you'll be doing is saving time and money on lockpicks.

since you've got a limited amount of perk points, dont spend them in lockpicking of all things.

So the top tier perk in the Lockpick tree that allows it so you never break a pick is made useless by a lockpick that never breaks? Good to know.
