Theft In ESO, Concerning Other Players.

Post » Mon Jul 29, 2013 6:48 am

Okay i was wondering the actual "system" of theft, I mean what is the defining difference in ESO as opposed to TES: Skyrim. In skyrim you can pickpocket absolutely everyone but most of the time you will get caught unless you have an outstanding Pickpocket skill set. In ESO will you be able to pickpocket any other player? If so does anyone know to what extent you will be able too? Like only levelled characters under your skill set? If so does that mean any thief is practically OP when it comes to smuggling equipment to other players and stealing legendary weapons, armour or equipment? What is the concept of "Theft" Bethesda is going for?

There is no theft or crime system. They've discussed adding the Theives Guild post-launch so that may change but I can't imagine you'll ever be able to steal from unwilling or unsuspecting players.

How dull then. I was planing on become a thief but now my hopes of stealing equipment from others in order to further my party is gone.

I highly doubt they will ever allow people to steal from others. You will probably be able to steal from NPCs, when they release the Thieves Guild, but they will NOT allow us to steal from players.

ZOS wants this game to be made for the masses. Adding things like this will piss off the masses and make the game niche. The masses don't want full loot PvP or items getting stolen from them. And the masses is what gives developers the most money. Not niche little groups.

Your first mistake is thinking this game will be like Skyrim.

Did you stop to think how it would feel when someone else stole your equipment?

But that is the whole reason everyone was excited for this game but i see you have failed to see that.

But what the masse have always wanted was "Uniqueness" to something but what they have always truly desiered to have is the same old thing and this loss of the stealing system will put a gaping hole in mass satisfaction but i doubt it will cause a ruckus.

Also if someone ever stole my equipment i would be mad obviously but never the less this would have added variety to the game.

Except not everyone expected this to be just like Skyrim. I expected this to be an MMO that was also blended in with features found in the TES series. Never once did I think this game was just going to be Skyrim, but online. If you did then, I don't know what to tell you. You can't just slap on online for Skyrim and tell people to just have fun. It doesn't have any MMO features in it to keep it sustainable.

And no, the masses would absolutely hate having gear stolen from them. Look at games with full loot PvP. How big are they? They aren't. You know why? Because the masses don't like to play games where they lose their gear. Simple as that. It's a niche and niche games never get big.

"Gaping hole"? Seriously? Not being able to pickpocket is not that big of a deal to most people. It's a form of non-consensual PvP, and given that you can load a saved game, failing as often as you do in Skyrim would lead to some steep penalties.

There are ways to add variety without making people mad or costing them gear they spent hours earning.

They want millions of people playing the game, not thousands. For every 1 person disappointed there is no way to steal other players' items, there are hundreds who would stop playing if their hard-earned gear could be stolen.

It's an interesting idea but I don't think it's really feasible, if I walk in to a tavern and I see someone crouch beside me, and my glorious mace of face-mangling is transferred from my inventory to theirs magically, I'd be incredibly frustrated, and it wouldn't be particularly immersive either. Just plain annoying.

I'd assume it'll be NPC chests or houses if you can steal at some point in the game.

Couldn't have said this better myself. This is not Skyrim Online, this is an MMO blended with many features of the TES series. Being able to pickpocket other players quite frankly would piss most of them off, and for every person who agrees with stealing from other players, one hundred players do not.

I really am starting to think that was asking for the answer to this topic and while it may have not been understood as to what i was really talking about you may have thought it as me giving you all and idea and expecting you all to like the idea or hate it, but i was asking.

Pff you and your logic, acting like it makes sense.

Not sure I am tracking. You asked, and we answered. Now we are discussing it. You defending your idea, and we are attacking it. That's the best way to dig to the truth. Once one side has a dominant position, reasonable people on both sides have something to think about. I've been on the "winning" side and still changed my position because I could see the truth on the other side even if they weren't the best debater.

Okay... just hear me out a second.

I See what OP is wanting and no i dont think full Equipment pickpocketing is a good idea, HOWEVER i do think if they at some point allowed player theft and pickpocketing was a feature in that category, It should be gold, not LARGE amounts but something significant to where the victim would notice.

THAT being said, a counter measure system should be introduced during the act to allow a player to defend themselves.

I think the idea is way to big for whats in store but if they did take the time to implement a pick pocket system there should be a way to counter it just to keep it fair.

That leads to non-consensual PvP since the only way to defend yourself is to fight. So a lvl 35 pp's a lvl 15...not exactly fair.

You are right, if you are happy with a niche game with a small population.

*edit*

Face it, you just want to beat up on lower level players so you can brag about how tough you are in a game. It's a common psychological escape mechanism for people who feel powerless.

We "failed to see that," wtf are you talking about? I believe the majority of us are in touch with what the community wants, instead of what people like you want. So we didn't fail to see anything, you just failed to use common sense and have realistic expectations of what an Elder Scrolls MMO should include.

It sounds like your the kind of person who would steal stuff from someone on your own faction.

Then make the game niche and no one will ever play it.

BTW that's not what ZOS wants. They want the masses to play the game not scare them away. So, no, this will not happen.

Yeah, but you stole from NPCs, not other players. Big difference.

NPCs don't give a [censored] if you stole from them. If a player notices their epic gear has been stolen, they will freak the [censored] out and go complain on the forums and quite the game. Making the game go from 2 million people to a couple thousand. Yeah, ZOS doesn't want that to happen.

Stop trying to compare gameplay of a single player game to an MMO. I don't care what you could do in Skyrim, that was towards NPCs. MMOs have other players in them. How about you think of them before you think of yourself.
