Theory: Why DLC costs $ after 2 weeks

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 5:32 am

What I am not understanding is why they think there will be enough people downloading this after the 2 weeks to make any money. If they MS and Sony charge for achievements/trophies I really doubt that what will be made on this DLC after the the 2 week trial will even get close to covering this cost. This is why I do not understand the 2 week free thing. I like free stuff, but if it's gonna be free it should stay free. I really don't care if it was or was not supposed to be in the original game. It wasn't, so as far as I see it, it is add-on content. I would normally pay for add-on content for a game I like, such as Brink.
It's their reasoning behind it that I do not understand.
Why do we have to speculate on every move they make?????
Why is it up to us to try and srot it out ;)

The two weeks without charge is their apology to the people who WILL download ASAP... some would argue it's because the DLC was supposed to be in the game. (I disagree with that claim).
What aren't you understanding about that?
That's the kind of apology that no one respects. You know, one hand out to shake yours while the other is behind their back, fingers crossed, so they know it's a lie. But want you to think it's good will.

It's just their business model. It isn't a hard thing to grasp. It isn't "up to us to try and [sort] it out" by any means.
It's simply how they operate. That is all. They make a ton of money on other DLC and such, but it would be unfair for all the paying publishers to give out free space to others and not them.

That's the kind of apology that no one respects. You know, one hand out to shake yours while the other is behind their back, fingers crossed, so they know it's a lie. But want you to think it's good will.
I don't see how it's a lie at all.

It cannot be free. That's all there is to it and it's not their fault. You should surprised they managed to reach THIS compromise with Sony and Microsoft.
If they didn't add in the trophies/achievements, we wouldn't have to pay.

You know what.
I'm not going to even argue.
A three paragraph rant is not what is needed. XD

Just call it a lack of confidence in Splash damage.

That's another I don't understand though. Why is everyone so butthurt about SD? Just because they didn't drop info when they got news?
I get it, the game wasn't exactly what we wanted... But still. It's just a bit ridiculous all the hate this company is getting from "fans."

But fine. Even though you and I both know how unsatisfying that is, I won't argue either.

It's because they dropped a craptastic game.

I have never been, and will never be a fan of this company. I took a chance on this game and lost out my money, which is a shame but oh well, it happens.
You know what the biggest thing that turned me off of it is? Lack of splitscreen. This in a shooter is just inexcusable for me, and if I knew it didn't have it, I wouldn't have picked it up. This game can only be fun with friends, but because of that, I can't play it with friends. (And everyone else avoids the game like it's the plague.)

Not to mention the confusing way of invites. (Launch game on invite? The hell?) And the trouble it was just to play online with the few people who had picked it up on release for some co-operative goodness. (Which lag destroyed.)

It, was a mess, and it isn't fun enough or good enough for many people to even look back at.

Or at least that's what i'd say if I was asked. But opinion is opinion.

It's like letting everyone see a movie for free for the opening week, and then start charging full price after that.

Business plan or not, it's a flawed system and I would actually rather see them make MORE money off of people like us so they can learn from what was flawed this time around and develop a higher quality product in the future.

In no way do I think the owe me anything or need to apologize to me for anything. I find very little not to like about Brink besides the crappy matchmaking system. maybe I am in the minority here, but I don't know why people would waste their time flaming on SD/B in post after post because you are getting something for free.

Oh, and the post title says "Theory". you seem pretty sure about why they are doing this.

Can't wait til Wednesday :celebration:

I still wouldn't define it as "craptastic." You're just a negative nancy. :P
But I do agree on one point: where the [expletive deleted] is my split-screen!?

Mmm, no, I just can't stand the games gunplay. It's mindless at best.

Anyways, I can't shut my mind off to the problems of this game. Which really is my problem with this game, I can't forgive it for it has done wrong. This game has made me witness a few interesting responses to a game. (Like initial like but growing rage worthy discontent. Or five minute quit due to it being slow and boring.)

Geez, I really need to stop getting off track on threads.

Um... You do know a ton of theaters do showings like that right? Typically they only last around 3 days though.
It's a marketing ploy in that case.
Offering free DLC looks good. If anything, that aspect alone with boost the community. People will see it and be like, "Hm... I should buy this game/re-play this game and try out this unbelievable deal!"
The fact they're offering it for free benefits everybody. It shows SD wants to give something to the dying community, SD/B obviously have a strong marketing team, Microsoft/Sony aren't as greedy as everyone seems to think, but in the end MS/Sony still get paid if the DLC is still profitable after the two-week period. It's actually a really good idea.
I want to be optimistic and say, "Well it WILL help the community!!" but I think the game has gone too far under at this point (in terms of public radar) that it won't be very helpful.

I am certain about it, it's done by tons of other industries. I worked in Marketing for awhile... So I've learned a lot here and there.

And don't get me wrong, I LOVE this game, I can't get enough of it. I just know how to accept the general consensus of the game.

How is the gunplay any different from any other popular/"good" FPS out? There's only so much you can do with guns. And with the emphasis on movement, it feels like a totally different game.
I am BAFFLED by that statement.

And, I hate to be that guy (and you know I love ya), but if you clearly hate the game so much, why do you insist on posting in the forums?
It's more than evident you don't play the game anymore... Do you really have anything else to offer to the community outside of another negative vote?

I hate splitscreen and don't think this is a slow paced game at all.

I also am old and prefer to play online.

I guess SD/B did a great job on marketing, cuz it seems like alot of people expected WAY too much from a brand new IP.

And I never go to the movies, but do they have free refreshments along with the free movie? If they do I may have to start going :)

I'm baffled too. Mindless gunplay? Mindless gameplay? Really? Coming from COD you say this? Really?

Do people actually enjoy wasting time blasting games on forums?
If you don't like it, noone really cares, move on and play what you like. If you want to leave a negative comment, at least back it up to help others.
Forums like this should be for constructive critical comments and bringing the community together with a healthy exchange of ideas. Hopefully the developers also take note of what is said and can use it to better this and future games.

BTW, I still think Poy Poy may be the greatest game ever created and deserves a HD remake.

This topic seems to have gotten off topic, so I'll shut it down. To answer the original question, we're actually only allowed to have it free on both PSN and LIVE for two weeks.
