Theory: Why DLC costs $ after 2 weeks

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 4:47 am

In order for DLC to have achievments added to it on XBL it has to cost money. I do believe thats the excuse that L4D had for having the DLC cost money on the 360 and not the PC. :spotted owl:

That's my Theory to why the DLC costs money.

(Although I'd rather have no achievements added and have the DLC free forever...)

Well there still is the issue with Achievements being added on the 360 and having to cost money. So in order for it to be free, it would have to have no Achievements...

Riddle me this: If for it to be free, it could not have achievements. Then why did the free co-op DLC for Red Dead Redemption have achievements?

It's because Bethesda wants to try and recoup some of it's losses on this game.

Microsoft wouldn't let Valve put in a free content patch, so they either didn't put it in [TF2] or were forced to charge for it [L4D2]. It has nothing to do with achievements costing money.

This is almost totally irrelevant and definitely off-topic... But how many of us played L4D before Brink..??
You're like the fourth person I've spoken to here that's either played or AT LEAST knew about some of the controversy the community had.

Some people might be and are away form home for the 2 weeks the DLC is out therefor wont be able to get them for free which in my opinion is just wrong as these maps were clearly meant to be in the game anyway, this is jus tthe rest of the game we are getting.

And the maps will be the same as all the other in the game, they will be mutliplayer maps and yes you will be able to play them in Bot mode [Bot mode = 'campaign' lol]

The main argument is that these maps, according to certain theorists, were SUPPOSED to be in the game from the start.
Where they get that from? I've no idea. It's probably to justify their crying and calling foul.

I think two-weeks is a great time span. No one who already has the game is going to miss the ENTIRE 14-day period that they could have gotten it for free. There are TONS of ways to ensure you get it for free.

If you absolutely CANNOT, by any means necessary, get this DLC then tough luck man.
Unfortunately, the way pricing is set up on our consoles, Achievements/Trophies cost money. There's no way either company would drop those out for free.
If there weren't any achievements, it'd be free forever. But then we'd complain that there weren't any.

I for one think it's a tremendous achievement on its own to get this free for ANY time WITH achievements and the likes, while still able and willing to compromise on BOTH ends. That's impressive of all the companies involved. I think sheer fact this DLC is available to us for free at all shows us a potential for future DLC releases. Who knows, Brink may have just helped redesign, or modify, the way DLC is delivered and priced.

TL;DR - No matter what they did, people would STILL find some BS to justify their whining.

Perhaps they would like to reward us for sticking around. Then, if the DLC is any good and a buzz starts, maybe all those used games will fly off the shelves. Thiose gus will have to pay for the DLC since SD/B doesn't see that money.

I hate to say it, but I honestly don't think the game will sell anymore than it has already. The DLC isn't going to be a huge boost to sales figures on ANYONE'S part.
If anything, it's going to convince the people who shelved it at home to pick it up and give it a shot again.

If the DLC is good enough, it MAY create a small buzz. But with the game's original reviews, it's likely not going to happen that way.

notice how I said IF and MAYBE.

I really see no other reason why you would charge after 2 weeks unless you were hoping for new players after the drop. If not it's pointless to charge for something noone is buying.

It's part of Sony and Microsoft's charging structure. If it has acheivements, it costs money. They're using space on their servers, that costs money.

Then it should always cost money since the only ones that will get the trophies and achievements are people like us who will get it as soon as it comes out.

The two weeks without charge is their apology to the people who WILL download ASAP... some would argue it's because the DLC was supposed to be in the game. (I disagree with that claim).
What aren't you understanding about that?
