Don't forget F.3.A.R. I feel dirty just typing it out like that.

At least that one works.

THI4F just doesn't. And I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking it. Too bad I wasn't the first to say it.

I didn't want to be called a downer, or complainer. :(

Wip3out was pretty good, though. That said, I'm still going to be pronouncing this as "Thi-four-eff", until it gains my respect.

Agreed on both sentences :hehe: Besides 3 and E are almost like mirror images. 4 and E are not. 4 doesn't look like anything.

Haven't played the old thief games, so i haven't any special feelings for the possible Thifourf either.

Seriously, you aren't to blame. No one was commenting on your post. It's what Eidos has actually named it.

I'm not a fan of stealth games. I always want to be, but it just never works out; I don't have the patience for them. Of course my lack of patience is becoming legendary.

Screw it, this post got too long.

I've managed to overcome that hurdle, and from now on I can safely read it's proper title: "Thiaf 4".

While it is in no way standardised, there are some fairly well established conventions within 1337 5|>34|<. For example, "3" == "E" and "4" == "A". So, yeah, not only is it an annoying attempt to be trendy, it is also kinda like Engrish. Or should I say '4ngris'?

The Thief Series is the best game series of all time. I've only ever been so excited for a game that I've bought it on release day twice in my life. The first time was Half-Life 2, and the second time was Oblivion. I haven't been excited since then. I'm excited about Thi4f. Yes, I was there the day they announced the game as THI4F, and yes, they got a lot of flak for it. The hardcoe Thief fans are harder-core fans than any fans I've ever seen. You think Morrowind has a dedicated fanbase, because they're still making mods for a game that came out in 2002? Pffft! The Thief community is still pumping out Fan-Missions for a game that came out in 1998! Their modding/FMing community (which focuses on The Metal Age, released in 2000) is just as strong, in my opinion as Morrowind's, and that's saying something. I really respect what Eidos Montreal has done with their interaction with the community, which started on May 11, 2009 (I know because it's my join date on the Eidos forums) and continues through today, although the game is obviously now much later in development. I loved the early Deus Ex games, and I've heard good things, but also some mixed reviews about Deus Ex: HR. The only thing between me and never gaming ever again is Thief: 4. As some folks in the community tech thread may know, I had been planning on buying a new computer this winter. Well I'm not. Reason? There wasn't an announcement of the release date for Thief 4, so I'm going to wait. I'm only building this new computer for that game anyway (any other games it allows me to play are just a bonus).

Moral of the story: If you haven't played any Thief games yet, you should try. I'm looking forward to Thi4f, but I'm not too optimistic yet, until I know more about it.

P.S. It was good to hear that Stephen Russell made an appearance in Skyrim.

Edit: Spelling.

Bah!

I don't have high hopes for Eidos Montreal to make Thief 4 (ThiAf) a good representation of the series, and by that I mean Thief 1 and 2. A lot of the crucial elements were missing in Thief 3 and felt like a serious deviation from the series' engrossing, artistic atmosphere and challenging gameplay. Considering this game will be targeted at console gamers, there is no way it's going to have the complexity of the first two games in the series. It's likely to become an Assassin's Creed type of game.

It's a shame what's become of Looking Glass' masterpiece.

Not only that, but as the first and only impression they've given the Thief community and potential fans is a ridiculous, trite spelling of the title.

I've already been burned with Thief 3, I'm not shelling out $50 for another disappointment.

Oh, come on now. Taken next to the other games, Deadly Shadows was very weak, but given the broad broad scope of all the other games in the world, and I'd give DS a solid B. Plus it gave classic missions like The Cradle and Overlook Manse (my favorite of all time, minus the Sword). Yea, the physics was bad, and we all missed rope-arrows, and it might not have been worth $50 bucks...but I haven't bought a new game in 5 years...so I don't think any game is worth $50 anymore.

And as for Thi4f, yea the whole thing has been done to death. The devs tried to play it off as a joke, so what. It was goofy, but it's not the end of the world. Get over it people, like most of us did 2 years ago.

Boo.

Deadly Shadows was too shallow in my opinion and no level, including the Cradle, persuaded me to think otherwise. While the graphics and environmental architecture were good, there were a few crucial, game-breaking elements that warrant this game a D+ in my book:

- Lootable treasures twinkle, as if the player is incapable of seeing them
- Arrows leave a cartoonish streak after firing
- Voice acting was probably the worse I've ever encountered in a game (who hired Vinny from Brooklyn, NY?!)
- Story was weak and not very immersive
- Environments felt very shallow and claustrophobic...one map from Thief 2 felt larger than the entire world in Thief 3

And a bunch of games/series suffered the same fate around that time. If we compare Deus Ex: Invisible War (which was released within six months of DS) to the original Dues Ex, is the difference any better than between DS and The Dark Project?

The difference is on the same level, if not greater, than the comparison between Deus Ex and Invisible War: an absolutely, spectacular nightmare.

Eidos trashed both of these series to accommodate console gamers and chose graphics over gameplay. If you have any love for stealth games and want an in-depth story and gameplay, play Thief: The Dark Project and/or Thief: The Metal Age. They are still king of all stealth games, and dare I say all games, as far as I'm concerned.

Perhaps I'm being more emotional than rational about this, but I've been playing the Thief series over and over again since it's release in 1998. I know and love these games in and out and there's something magical about a FPS-sneaker that can be replayed again and again ad infinitum.

Awesome. Looks like GOG had a deal with Square Enix or something, since Hitman and Deus Ex are on there now as well. :)

 Speaking of ruining good game, I nearly cried laughing when I thought of this image from years ago.

I'm glad I was able to find it on the TTLG forum archives. http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/6797/thiefthegokartprojectwo2.jpg

And if anyone thinks that would be a cool idea, I think someone did create a mod titled Thief: The Kart Project. I never explored it myself, but it might be worth looking into!

I've never played the Thief series, though it's been recommended to me in the past few years, but after Deus Ex: Human Revolution, anything Eidos Montreal touch deserves at least my interest. They've got good programmers suited for proper multiplatform development and they've got good designers, in my opinion, and I respect them and trust them for both.

Play the first two by Looking Glass and cry at just how wonderful they are. Dust yourself down and then play System Shock 1 & 2.

Then proceed to finding their sequels and "spiritual successors" ranging from bland to awful. :(
