Thieving Settlers

Post » Sat Dec 05, 2015 7:12 pm

Anyone else having a problem with settlers stealing your stuff? I thought there was some sort of glitch or bug that was causing my equipment to disappear. I've had weapons and all the ammo for weapons disappear, my power armor moved and the helmet disappeared.... When I was giving a settler some new armor I discovered the problem. It would seem someone thought it would be cool to let settlers high jack your power armor the second danger presents itself. Even if it's a single molerat and everyone is surrounded by turrets and packing automatic weapons. They just NEED the power armor!! After the joy ride they take the damn helmet with them. So I rounded up all my settlers and had a look at what they had on them. Low and behold there's all my missing equipment!! Settlers seem to love heavy weapons, my minigun, missile launcher, fatman and their ammo all found. Each offender was executed on the spot, including the joyrider.

I have found an solution to the power armor, don't leave a fusion core in the armor.

The other issue has taken a turn for the worse. This free weapon and ammo idea seems to effect quest npcs. Last night I walked by Preston Garvey and he had a gamma pistol equiped. I checked my weapons locker and sure enough my gamma pistol and all my ammo is gone and I can't access Preston's inventory.... so great....600 gamma rounds gone

Why the hell would you let npcs have access to containers??? Very annoying.

You have settlers actually taking items out of your storage containers?
That has never happened to me...yet.

They have taken things I have used to "decorate" my private chambers.
Like guns, and armors I put out on tables for decoration only.

I have not noticed this problem. But, I do not know how to equip NPCs (because this game explains hardly anything). So, maybe it has something to do with equiping them the first time.

Hmm, I wonder what happens i you hide your stuff in a dead bloatfly, all 10 tons of it.

Where are you storing your stuff? I've never had a settler using my weapons or Power Armour during an attack, and I place every weapon I don't use in the workbench's storage. However, I also never store ammo or Fusion Cores in the workbench because they're weightless.

I've seen other threads discussing this. I have not had this problem though. I can only suggest what I think may be the problem.. (but I have no way of knowing for sure.) I built a house for my character in sanctuary. When preston and his gang arrived in sanctuary they all immediately started milling about inside "my house". I didn't like this so I put a bunch of beds in the workshop house and assigned them all beds. This immediately stopped them from hanging out in my house. I'm thinking it has something to do to where you assign them to sleep. .. I dont' store anything but junk in the workbench so, if they are taking things I haven't noticed. They do seem to put things (food, water, scrap) in the workbench though. This suggests that they do have access to the workbench and the items within. Maybe if you put beds in another house.. away from the workbench and assigned them beds there.. they wouldn't go near the workbench?

Not in the workbench, hence the "why would you let npcs have access to containers???"

When I place a container it's mine and no one should be able to access it but me. I've spent a lot of time outfitting my settlers with improved armor, weapons and built safe settlements for them.

Guess I was expecting too much.

I've read the only place your items don't get stolen by enemies or your own settlers in your house you can buy in Diamond City.

So you store all your things there, but you gotta have supply lines to use them at other workshops (obviously).

I found a solution: I built a little "garden shed" out of corner pieces, with no door, and put a steamer trunk in there. When I need something, I enter workshop mode and remove a wall to access the container, then seal 'er back up when done.

They aren't actually stealing stuff... the ai is just a little "smarter" in some ways...

If an npc looses its weapon in combat duo to disarming, he is going to pick it up again.

If one runs out of ammo, he might pick up anotherones gun instead of attacking with melee attacks.

Saw it all happening.

Same ai applies to the settlers.

I bet if u'd equip everyone with a gun and some ammo, they wouldn't take ur weapons. :P

Wrong, at least where ammo is concerned.

It seems the settlers don't consume ammo (and I know for-a-fact they don't drain the FC in pwr armor, though they need the FC to use the suit).

I gave my head scavver (the one assigned to the bench) a 10mm and four clips (48 rounds). Some raiders showed up, and I saw her shooting like crazy. I figured I should re-stock her, but when I accessed her inventory, she still had all the ammo I initially gave her.

They all have armor, weapons, and ammo for the weapon they wield.

I use the red rocket as my base I've built the main structure on top of the canopy and I take the stairs out when I'm not there, also there are no settlers assigned there other than the supply line from sanctuary. I did try having a few settlers but I'd find them wandering around using my workbenches when I fast travelled back, even though there is no way for them to get up to them so they were shipped off to other settlements.

Excecuted on the spot haha nice. Had the same issue. Then I tried to make a settlement in Boston commons where there are no settlers allowed only my companions lol. They usually stay out of my stuff. I'm planning on moving again trying to find a settlement that companions don't constantly glitch at but we will see.

Same issue as OP. All items in workbench are totally safe, all weapons/ammo in containers I built are open game far as settlers are concerned.

Non-weapons gear seem ignored though. I use couple different metal boxes to store old holotapes, notes and papers, quest items after quests are done, etc so my inventory page stays short and lean. Settlers never touch those nor my purified water stash.

but weapons i use to keep as quick change out gear - stuff i dont always carry but often enough that I wanted in separate box so taking out was quicker than scrolling through huge workbench inventory is stolen by settlers.

Re ammo - settlers only need 1 ammo of any caliber to fire infinite rounds. But they do pick up more ammo. Guess they have the same hoarder mentality I do.

I haven't personally lost anything but as people have said this can happen, Home Base at Diamond City being the only safe location.

My solution is that my home base has no settlers and no beacon, and although others have said settlers can arrive randomly even without a beacon I've not had that happen at 3 separate locations. So far I've not lost anything.

Its a shame this happens with settlers, I did plan on having a castle style home, with a seperate servants quarters of people to farm my food, shine my shoes etc I tried it and later found 1 of them in my bed and another using my workbench so had to kick them out.

why would you leave ammo in storage. ammo has no weight. if you dont leave the ammo they dont take the weapons. also wit the suits, they wont wear helmets, so if you have power suits that you dont care about leave them for them to wear. i for instance have 4 unused suits that i left cores in and now 3 settlers are always in them. i also painted all my suits that i want settlers in in the Hot Rod Shark paint. my other 15 suits are all kept without cores.

I may have to move stuff also. As it turns out in this play-through I never built up RR or put any settlers because I wanted to live in my settlements this time. But currently I can't keep them out of my bed so I may just put a locker at RR to store excess stuff.

I like to stockpile the ammo, just adds a little bit of realism to how I play.

I'm not surprised that Settlers pick up guns and ammo from containers or surfaces but I guess you guys might be.

See I have played the other games totally modded out and have observed that this is common behavior. You probably don't know what Willow is but in a custom home that had sorters and decorations pop up everywhere based on storage well Willow drank all my nuka-cola's >< I thought it was cute for a while to see her walk over to the fridge and get a drink but she actually was consuming my nuka cola quantums !!!
