I'm at my happiest when I wake up after sleeping a full night without anything waking me up.

The thing about happiness,
like the soft green,
tendrils of sweet growing things,
eventually,
it evolves only to be
a fleeting thing.
No matter how much I try
I can't achieve
this state of being.
Exept temporarily.

I'd say it's negativity if its sole purpose is to look down on something.

I figure you can divide happiness into two rough categories (extreme simplification incoming):
  • Positivity - Happiness derived from a stimulus you enjoy
  • Negativity - Happiness derived from the derision of a stimulus you don't enjoy
They both fulfill similar social motives, whether the derision is widely socially acceptable or not. Take hipsters for example. They deride popular culture even though it's just that, popular, and they still earn some sense of belonging from it because they surround themselves with a like-minded minority.

You see, the field can be played both ways. Back during the 1800s, the majority of White Americans at the time saw it as a negative to be pro-Black Rights/Freedom, yet there was a White minority that thought positively for Black Rights/Freedom. Using what you define as Positive and Negative, those who were anti-Black Rights/Freedom, would say those who were pro, were negative because they got joy out of ridiculing and hating on anti-Black Rights/Freedom people, yet they (the anti-Blacks,) were Positive because they enjoyed the feeling they got from hating Blacks because it made them feel superior. And as we know, the battle between those for Blacks Rights, and those against, went on for some decades later, and are still to a point, a topic for some. Only the sides have reversed.

If you enjoy racism because you enjoy bringing others down, that's more of a negative thing.

I should maybe append a "harmless" to the Positive side. The point is that the only enjoyment is from what the stimulus does for you, not for anything negative that it does to others.

Hmm, it's unfortunate you take joy in negativity, but as long as you're happy.
If the outcome is positive then it should be a positive.

But what Positive and Negative is, can't be defined in absolutes, they're always subject to change and definition by the majority compared to the minority. For example, if the Majority in the US said that regardless of who it effects, slapping your kid over the head, or spanking them is alright and teaches them the importance of child obedience to their parents, then it's something people would see positively. And for years, Americans saw slapping or spanking their kid as a good thing, and way of teaching them just where their place was in the hierarchy of the family system. Nowadays, slapping or spanking a kid is seen as a negative to the majority of people, and those that don't are put in a positive light. Back then, regardless of whether the kid was suffering or not from getting slapped or spanked, the majority didn't care because they saw it as a positive, as I said, to showing the child where their supposed place was. And so it went on like this for years, with the parents raising a hand against their child/children.

Don't take Positive and Negative so literally. Poorly worded as it is, I have a hard time believing you don't see my point, and I feel you're arguing semantics for the sake of argument.

I'm basically talking about happiness derived from personal or general benefit, versus happiness derived from the suffering of others. I'm not discussing philosophy at all, I'm taking a more psychological perspective. This has nothing to do with subjective definitions of positive and negative, but whether or not someone else is harmed to make one feel better.

As such, social concepts like majority or morality don't even enter into the equation.

Man, I was tempted to say discussion and debate makes me happy, but you're killing it!

It's not about whether I see your point or not, I do see your point, but I just happen to disagree that Positive and Negative are so defined as you put them.

Saying someone is negative because they ridicule people who have some obsession with a little girl's cartoon, might make you take a step back and redefine what it is you're actually apart of. I mean, this whole little MLP thing, is nothing but an internet fad, soon to fade away just as quickly as it came around. If you take offense to something like a fad being insulted or ridiculed, you're definitely going to want to reassess your definition of positive and negative. It's no different than when a comedian mocks something serious, and people take offense to his/her joke, not realizing that it's just simply a joke.

Now you're missing my point. Going back to the whole Slavery/Freedom bit about 1800s America, those who were pro-Slavery were happy with having black slaves, because they were getting both happiness from the benefit of having free labor, and since they saw themselves as overall superior race wise, got happiness from the suffering that their black slaves had working for them, and living the conditions they did. Psychologically, pro-Slavery people had exactly the same happiness you're trying to say is separate from one another, occurring within them at the same time.

This thread is turning out more entertaining than I thought.

On topic: A good cup of coffee and a doughnut.

A cup of coffee used to make me happy. Now it is the 5th cup of coffee that makes me happy.

See, you're still just arguing semantics. It has nothing to do with whether or not I take offense. The positive and negative aspects are about the source of the derived happiness, not about feelings on either side. Even suffering as I put it isn't accurate, maybe it would be better to say "at the expense of others". Forgot positive and negative, you're just arguing semantics when you bring those up. You can use whatever terms you like, as long as we both know what we're talking about.

I would define mockery of all forms as quote unquote "negative", even if both parties find it funny.

And I never said everything had to be divided neatly into the two categories. Slavery, for example, is multidimensional. There's the labor aspect, and there's the racism aspect. The aspects fit into different categories. Perhaps you can enlighten me on how insulting a television show fits both categories.

I also disagree with you on "internet fad, soon to fade away" for various reasons, but that's a discussion for the MLP thread specifically I think. You can bring it there if you'd like.

Sometimes, especially after eating (for some reason), I get really weird and start laughing at the dumbest things. An example, there's this teacher named Mrs. Henkhe, and my friend said said "henkhe jenhke" for no reason. This little phrase sent me into laughter seizures, for like, 3 minutes. I have no idea why.

Things like that make me happy. I have a huge list of things that make me smile, but I don't feel like writing them all. It's a big list!

Also, Pinkie Pie.

I've decided to write a list after all.

I look forward to getting to wear recently washed clothes.
Long Showers
Antique Shops
(Good)Techno Music
Posters for my room
Waking up to music in the mornings
Robot girls
Getting new armor/weapons in a game
Ponies
Getting references
Nature
Animals, especially cats
The BEGINNINGS of epic adventure movies
Waiting in line with friends
Watching fish swim around in a lake
Doodling
Listening to music while cleaning my room
Really loud Pokemon music
A clean room
Marathoning things
Movie trailers
Game trailers

All these things seem like they would please anyone, but they make me ECSTATIC. There's more, but that's all I can think of right now.

Killing things in the most violent way. Either that, or getting killed in the most violent way.(in games) That, and sleeping in. I LOVE sleeping, it`s like travelling to another dimension! Oh, and long hot showers. God I LOVE THEM!!

Some would say I`m either sadistic or cruel, but according to Aristotle, I`m not. God bless Aristotle.

But what as you define all forms of mockery to be "negative", that doesn't make it so, and just because you hold that thinking, doesn't make anyone who doesn't agree with you, any less wrong or righter than you. It's all simply subjective. You found the comment to be negative, while he found it to be positive. Others found it negative too probably, just like others found it to be positive.

And I never said everything had to be divided neatly into the two categories. Slavery, for example, is multidimensional. There's the labor aspect, and there's the racism aspect. It's the same as when I described the child being slapped or spanked by their parents, which wasn't the same as when I was talking about slavery. At one time, slapping and spanking a kid was okay, while now it's not so much anymore. At one point, making fun of "My Little Pony" was pointless to ridicule because it was strictly an age attentive show, attaining most viewers at the age of 10 and below. But now that it's moved on to some teenagers and what not, so their peers belittle them a bit because it's funny to see teenagers and whatnot watching a little girl's show, and as there is with everything, two sides to the coin argue and debate it out on which side is right or wrong.

I also disagree with you on "internet fad, soon to fade away" for various reasons, but that's a discussion for the MLP thread specifically I think. You can bring it there if you'd like.

It will, trust me, they always do. One minute it's "Arrow to the Knee" jokes that take center stage, next it's "My Little Pony". It's only ever an amount of time. There's no point in discussing or debating it, because past fads have show this to be true, and you can bet that plenty of people who followed the previous internet fads, didn't think they'd die out in popularity either. A good example being the Jersey Shore.

Don't equate MLP to a meme, or a fad. That's so wrong in so many ways.

but you should take this to the MLP thread, like Frodo said.

You're still stuck on Positive = good and Negative = bad. I've already said that's not what I mean! Think instead of Positive as the addition of something, like the enjoyment of a television show or making money. Think of Negative as removing something, like the status or rights of an outside group. Mockery is negative because it is based on damaging the image of an outside group. I'm defining this as an ingroup-outgroup thing. Positive (I use these terms only for myself, substitute it with whatever term you want!) directly benefits the ingroup, Negative indirectly benefits the ingroup by harming (objectively, such as image, so as not to bring emotions into the equation) the outgroup. Even that's perhaps not a perfect description.

Spanking a child is Negative. It's dependent on the belittling of a group, in this case the child. Likewise ridicule of what someone enjoys is Negative, because it relies on the belittling of that person. I think you need to make clear why you disagree with the idea behind that, and stop arguing the semantics of the words I use. If you don't, I think I'll have to cut the debate short because honestly I'm tired of repeating myself.

I'm not especially attached to this theory of mine as it is, since I made it up on the spot. I just wish you'd discuss it objectively, and not continuously bring up philosophy and different definitions of terms.

Oh, and http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1332768-my-little-pony-threadship-is-magic/. We're just discussing t-shirts right now, nothing serious. Don't feel like you're intruding.
