Thinking of making a Dishonored FAQPrimer

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 10:00 am

In addition to being a small fish in the Dishonored ponds here. I try to talk with great frequency about the game on the GameFAQs board. Initially, it was just posting links to articles and other finds posted by greater sleuths than I from more intrepid fans. With the videos that are available now and the increase in print articles, there's no lack of information to be found now.

That said, sometimes there will be passerbys that just want it all in one place and the multiple topics I have there are inefficient at this point. This would be my first sticky and culmination of all things related to one title. And I can't do it alone. Some aspects of the game I would highlight would be furnished with info I can only glean from the wiki right now, and anything not in the wiki might appear because of info from posters that I read here and not in an article.

I'm not asking for help in composition (aside from possibly a once-over look for accuracy for anyone who may be inclined to want to) but I wouldn't feel comfortable beginning this undertaking (such as it is) without asking makatak7, Oof and others if it would be alright. And Arkane too! Obviously there would be attribution for anyone who I quote or reference. The wiki link along with articles would go before any synopsis or rag-tag configuration of words I mash together.

It's still a relatively small board, but doing this preemptively could sheperd some wayward souls to the Dishonored flock sooner and I'm already proselytizing whenever I can. If Arkane or the principal people I've brought up object though, I won't do anything other than the scattershot posts I've made for elucidation purposes. Wanting to be thorough, it'll probably be at least two weeks before a first draft is feasible anyway.

I think that covers all the concerns, ethical quandaries and such. Thank you to Arkane for making a game that I care enough to do this for---more than that, I want to. And thank you to everyone here who has broadened my understanding of this game and its beautiful clockwork/steampunk gears. You all add to the impetus of wanting to pay it forward. Thank you.

I fully support this! Good dedication. We'll all try to help out as best we can to bring the most basic and objective facts to the FAQ.

First step is re-reading all the information currently available, watching all the videos and reviewing all posters both prolific *hitches a thumb at you, Strife* :) and others who all the same have made salient points/connections irrespective of frequency. So I shall dive in henceforth. Thank you for your encouragement.

There are still a lot of misconceptions about this game floating around, so I think this is a great idea. It'd be nice to have nice, clean reference.

This would be great! You have my full support, as well as permission to use all the information on the wiki (you don't need any permission, but just to make it official). Best of luck! Just ask if you need help with anything!

I appreciate the permission all the same. I'll endeavor to change the language where I can so that it's not a direct lift but you've already been very economical with descriptions so a lot of things will inevitably read similarly lol. And a link will preface descriptions where I can since it should be subordinate to both the wiki and anything brought up here initially by developers or other posters.

One thing I can ask right now is a little confusion about Enhancements. They're passive bumps but I think I've read descriptions of them in the same vein as powers---specifically Shadow Kill/Ash has been brought up in the forums as both a passive skill and a selectable power (the latter being my understanding and preferred definition of it from how Raf has spoke of it in E3 demos). Others aren't as murky for me like Vitality in the Health topic. I would think they're definitely Enhancements and a passive boost all the time. This would be less of an issue if I knew what growth track they follow---namely how do you invest in them. Runes for powers, money for virtually everything else. Does this make sense?

Shadow Kill is a passive ability that is active all the time. Whale Bone Charms are for enhancements and Runes are for Active abilities. Enhancements grant permanent improvements, from improving the effects of elixirs, swimming speed, or jump height, to allowing Corvo to recuperate when he is near fountains and so on. You can only find enough for 12 in one playtrough from the 45 available enhancements.

Oh geez. So charms and Enhancements are one and the same? Ok, I'm used to thinking of them as charms even though Enhancements are the practical benefits in the charms. Good. Thank you :)

Also, Sarkayel I'm really sorry. When I was drafting the reply to makatak and question to whoever on my phone, I scrolled down and saw your name at the last second or I would have asked you directly/thanked you profusely for your active involvement here at the forums, feeding our rapacious hunger for all things Dishonored. It didn't register until I popped into another topic that you were perusing this one and then when I came back there was a plume of smoke where you once were. I hope you weren't offended.

I still don't get how he unfolds his sword. It's supposed to be a switchblade yet it unfolds like a balisong knife. I have the concept art of the sword but it doesn't explain what each mechanism does.

I'm not sure either. It does look more like a balisong (butterfly) knife.

Yeah, but it can't bee it's way short even for a short swoard. It's a switchblade just gotta figure out the mechanism.

Maybe it's made to not be figured out, as Dishonored takes place in an alternate universe with alternate technology.

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this FAQ so I can send anyone who asks about the game to it (and the Wiki).

Aside from that, I've decided that I'm so hyped about this game that I should really be in media blackout, so see you foo's in October!

NO! I like you, please stay.

Speaking of the wiki, about the whale bone charms. Does it say you find random charms or you find them randomly? This is one makatak7 can answer. If you find just random ones it will be more than disappointing. Or is one charm you find=one enhancement you choose?

I think that they are random (random enhancement), unfortunately. However, I am not sure, that is just what I think. It could be okay, trying to find ways to make use of a new random enhancement you get.

NOOOOOOO!!! This can't be true...ah, ah...no, no way. I need an official confirmation for this. It would be silly to leave 12 random enhancements lying around. What if I find the perfect 12 enhancement combo I like? What then? I am forced to get Explosive Resistance because that's what I find? That can't be true because that is flat out cheap. A game with player option where building your character relies on luck? Nah, I won't have any of that. I still know that the skills are more important and you can still pick them yourself but if I don't get to pick my Shadow Kill enhancement than what have I been hyping about all this time?

I seriously hope this isn't the case because that might just ruin it for me. I know it's a little thing that doesn't mean much in term of gameplay but still.

I understand what you're saying. Again, I am not sure, those are just my thoughts. We need someone from Arkane to tell us officially.

So I went through the French article in the health topic with Google Translate on my phone as that's the only means presently I have been and currently access the Internet. I believe I found one thing that hasn't been brought up.

Has it been mentioned yet that Corvo will have a maximum of 10 Bone Charm slots for Enhancements? It's in the third paragraph of my shoddy transcription, so that reference should show up at around the same point in the original article. Slots will be purchased with money. Given the preorder bonuses and statues unlocking a slot, I'm inclined to think they could be for sale and the 10 number is real.

I need to write this now while my connection is alive. Everything I've seen looks amazing, Dan. When I have a computer on Friday, I plan to watch the E3 videos continuously as I've wanted to to drink up what I can. Thank you for creating wonderful, vibrant looking environments that I can't wait to eagerly traipse through in October.

One thing I thought should be in the FAQ is a link to the "Meet the Developers" thread. Would any visiting and possible revival by new people be a disruption? I don't want to include it if it's more harmful than good.

Edit: I can't wait until I have a computer. Feeling stupid.

I think there are only 12 bone charms for enhancements in one playtrough. And yes I have a lot of questions about them as well. Hope to get an official confirmation from someone.

OK, that's good. But we still don't know a lot about the enhancements. From the wiki it says there are 45 available. That's good, lot's of variety. But if we can only get 12 in one playtrough, do the charms act as points we can spend on enhancements? Is there any other way to obtain enhancements?

So it's a power, not an enhancement? You have to cast it every time and it costs spiritual essence?
