This game isn't likely to succeed in the financial sense

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 6:19 am

Let me cut to the chase:

1. TES elements not present in this game to any appreciable degree.

2. Game sounds dull and stale, completely disregarding the fact that it is tied to TES lore.

3. WoW-based mechanics...as mentioned in the article.

4. No innovative elements, at all. Nothing to set itself apart from the current WoW-pack.

Let's view this, not from the point of a TES fan, but from an MMOers perspective. Why would anybody who has played SWToR, WoW or any of its incarnations deign to play this game when it offers nothing new? Since this game obviously wasn't intended to cater to TES fans, which is IRONIC GIVEN THAT IT IS TES THEMED AND SOMEWHAT CONSISTENT WITH THE LORE, it must mean that it's intended to draw in players from WoW. However, what MMO that has tried to siphon subscribers from WoW has been successful without being something entirely different?

Rift, the consummate WoW clone is barely clinging onto a p2p model. AoC has bitten the dust and it boasted much more in terms of combat and will be arguably comparable to what TESO has to offer given the description by its own developers in the various leaks. GW2 is entering the scene, has perfected WoW with AoC modifications and will be subscription-less. TERA has solid action combat as do the other AMMORPGs like RAiderZ, Vindictus etc.

So... the argument that it's not aimed towards TES fans is inane, since it would have far too much competition to be successful otherwise. It's like saying that SWToR wasn't supposed to attract starwars fans, while the only people left actually playing it are the starwars fans.

Some people are saying it will be DAoC 2, which is kind of sad, because that games standards have gone the way of the dinosaur and the market is heading to perfect competition implying that this game will either launch with all of the bells and whistles being the dungeon finder, battlegrounds, 20 person raid encounters etc. or it will be devoured by the game that will have perfected the art for over 8 years.

Oh yeah, GW2 has RVR combat, so ... there is no niche for this game to fill, no huge MMO audience for it to cater to.. other than the TES crowd that it is taking a dump on.

One huge flaw in your post - its all based off of a screenshot and a magazine argument. You don't know what they game is going to be like. You assume that everyone who's going to play are massive TES fans and expect TES with multiplayer. You've read an article, and decided that everything is the same as WoW. Talk about counting your chickens before they hatch ...

I love these kind of comments. Comments that sounds like the OP has played a the game.
But.. wait! The game its a year away from release... we know barely a sh*t of it.
Enough said I guess.

PS. Im not defending ESO, Im just defending common sense.

Common sense would also dictate that they would have divulged their most innovative and groundbreaking features with the unveiling of the title within 2 years of release.

Why would you reveal something that sounds horrible?

I didn't, the guy who wrote the article did and rightfully so, since he was told to use that terminology. If they had some kind of card up their sleeve to enthrall us with and generate hype for their game, they would have laid it on the table. Can you recall how much SWToR was hyped? All of the lies that were spread and told.. maybe I actually ought to laud them for coming out and giving it to us straight.

It's like admitting to defeat almost, as if they had screwed up in production with their "too hard to implement" excuses and simply agreed to a substandard game.

And why not? Who are you to dictate how they should announce a game in progress? And they dont revealed that much. 90% of things are speculations.

The game will follow the same route as SWTOR did.

The route of SWTOR was hilarious indeed.

Phase 1
-Info is shown "This game is going to kill WoW zomg!"

Phase 2
-Gameplay is shown and idiots fooled by the choreographed animations are like "Look how much different it is then WoW much better zomg!"

Phase 3
-Trinity system confirmed "Who cares if it's like WoW, it will still be better zomg!"

Phase 4
-Game comes out and is a mess "Who cares if it's not as polished as WoW! WoW's had years to get all the features it has! Give SWTOR moar time zomg!"

So it went from guaranteed earth shattering game of greatness to "it's not fair to compare the game to WoW, of course WoW is better it's been out for a long time!".

Looks like we are on phase 1. Oh and graphics won't improve 10 fold due to early development (lol 5 years and counting already). Hero Engine, get used to disappointment.

Good points. Zenimax seems to be pushing the "familiarity line" to pull in mmo fans (while at the same time alienating TES fans) - which ironically is going to hurt their bottom line. Take a look at GW2's manifesto trailer. Their promise to do something different, regardless of whether they deliver, is exactly what got my attention. TES is apparently also going to release in the same time frame as GW2, yet there's hardly any details, let alone a beta. This does not inspire confidence.

I don't agree with your four points, but they have certainly failed to portray they game as something to look forward to for either demographic, TES and MMO fans alike. I fear first impressions will ride this project down the drain =(

They revealed A LOT. They gave away the combat system entirely. They gave away their dungeon system (group mechanics) entirely. They gave away their story progression, or the themepark implementation thereof, entirely. Not even the imagination was spared, since screenshots were provided as well!

Hell, they even said which engine was used and .. after the debacle(s) involving it, it probably would have been more prudent to just keep quiet.

If I were workign for ZO I'd fire the guy for saying too much really, well, whoever, told the guy who wrote that article.

Don't mind the poor pony. Poor deary thinks that if Zenimax Online failed hard with this game that it wouldn't affect Zenimax Media in any negative way.
