Thoughts on the Xbox One?

Post » Tue Aug 13, 2013 1:16 pm

Hello everyone

So apparently, Microsoft altered another part of the Xbox One today: http://kotaku.com/xbox-one-wont-actually-need-kinect-plugged-in-microso-1113142909 This decision is the most recent in a long trend of Microsoft altering/revising/changing the Xbox One's policies in the face of a largely negative reaction since E3.

With this in mind, I thought it might be interesting to see how people on this forum feel about the Xbox One now that it's largely a different creature than what Microsoft was asking people to pay $500 for a few months back.

Please be respectful and courteous to each other, and try not to turn this into a console bashing/flame war. If you disagree with someone, please elaborate with reasons rather than ad hominem.

Full disclosure: I wasn't impressed with the console at E3, and I still don't think I'll be getting one. I've never owned an Xbox, so there's no loyalty tying me to the platform. Furthermore, none of the exclusives for it seem like things that I have to have, and the games I do want on it are available on other platforms as well. I'm also not a fan of the Xbox's controllers.

Also, the constant backtracking doesn't give me confidence in Microsoft. I thought their ideas were bad at E3, and it was distressing to me that they thought those ideas were good enough to make it through a meeting without the people pitching them getting shot down, but the continually shifting policies make it seem like Microsoft doesn't know what it's doing with this.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

Still not getting it. I'm going with the PS4. They were only listening to the money (even if they are a company). M$ tried to get away with it. Not in my books. :nono:

I have used an Xbox for ages. Their reversal of policy on what they deemed their 'vision for the future' reeks of hypocrisy and I cannot put my money into such a whimsical series of reversals. I honestly would have respected them more if they had kept their initial vision from the start. At least they would have had some potentially interesting features then.

At this rate nothing about their console intrigues me. My confidence with their ability to deliver a quality product has never been all that good and this just exacerbates that feeling. Add the way they nickel and dime you for wvery service imaginable on the Xbox 360 as it is and no thanks.

I'll be getting a PS4 and I will continue to use my low-mid range PC for PC gaming, till I upgrade to a better PC.

I was quite disappointed with the Xbox One when it was first unveiled. It seems now that Microsoft finally realize that customers want simplicity and none of those demanding policies the PS4 never planned to force on their players, which is a good thing. The fact that they even intended to release it that way is alarming though, and it shows what they're capable of doing, and it also tells us quite a bit about their way of thinking. As if that wasn't obvious enough already.

As I said, I wasn't too keen on the Xbox One to begin with, but I'm definitely certain that I'm not going to get one now; it's just wasn't as impressive as I expected, and Shuhei Yoshida was way too charming during E3, so if I'm going to get a console this generation it will definitely be the PS4.

I never really was disappointed with the Xbox one (besides the price). An I really don't care if Microsoft is the most evil company out there. So long as they have a good console with good games, which it looks like it does. However I am still getting a PS4 just because I've had a 360 and I just want to try something different.

Also Playstation plus looks like a really good deal with all the games there giving away.

I'll be keeping my 360 the XboxOne is a sunken ship, MS should have stayed on track and released a newer console to compete with PS4 but they embraced the DRM to a point of actually ignoring fans and putting it in the XboxOne plus the fact they tried to push you into needing to basically online 24/7, on top of other things these changes no longer matter plus the high price. Microsoft should just abort releasing the system and stick to 360 for a couple more years then remake the XboxOne or just make another brand new better system all together.

Although I found the policies Microsoft was initially planning for the One to be pretty disgusting, I don't know what exactly to think of the constant backtracking they've been doing ever since. Sure, it's pragmatic of them, and it's great that consumers managed to deliver a knockout punch to that nonsense, enough to keep it out of the market for at least a little while longer. But at the same time, it just seems so...pandering. It's just another sign of how Microsoft is constantly trying to play catch-up with the competition, like what they've been doing (and failing) on the mobile computing front...which doesn't instill a whole lot of confidence in me.

In the end, it's neither here nor there. I'm seldom interested in consoles at release, and the One so far has nothing that caught my eye. The PS4 has a bit more going for it, which gives it the edge (as does the $100 difference), but it's still way too early to properly judge either machine.

Go home, Micro$oft. You're drunk!

But seriously, didn't like it at the unveiling, disgusted by M$'s constant changes, and really I was going to get a PS4 anyway for all Sony's awesome exclusives, so I would be completely indifferent to the console if it was a good one.

Basically, the console war has been won by Sony. No more debates on which console is better, no more bashing each other for playing a different console. We are all united under the banner of Sony. :D

My next-gen gaming plan-

Wii U

Gaming PC

PS4

*Laughs at X1*

Their policies and plans were horrible and monstrous. I am never going back to Xbox. I am fond of my 360 and original Xbox memories. Its easier for me to get a gaming PC and the games will last longer.

The console war is far from over and unfortunately there are tons of gamers who are, and will continue to, flock back to Microsoft just out of familiarity. Though maybe that isn't a bad thing. Competition can only be a good thing. Trust me, we do not want a monopoly in the game industry.

I'll get an Xbox One in a couple of years when it's cheap and second-hand to keep up with the exclusives I'll miss like Halo. But PS4 gets all my love. All of it. I'm gonna love all over the PS4...

Or do you think they might still be Microsoft loyal because they respect them for accepting fan feedback, and getting rid of all the stupid stuff?

Microsoft all the way.

Except that isn't what happened. The ONLY thing that moved microsoft in their new direction was the realization of loss of sales. They adamantly defended their vision and basically called their fans idiots. 'We already have an offline device, it is called the Xbox 360' Then when they realized that their vision was full of [censored] they flip flopped to save their console from flopping.

You can look at it in a different way. Proof is the fact there including high quality head phones with each Xbox One. (Despite the fact they weren't included with the orignal xbox or 360) . Now, and the fact you don't need kinect to play, shows it. They know it was stupid, and there reversing and giving there fans what they want

And the fact you think Sony is any better, because they aren't, There systems on the PS4 was an attempt to destroy there competitors sales and make fun of them (As shown by that silly video) . Not because of any morality you think they have. Both Microsoft and Sony are companies, and companies always put making money first.

How is that in any way proof? They clearly realized they had unrealistic expectations with their consoles and tried to force people to purchase something they didn't want. When people didn't go for it they changed their policy. Real shocker that, surely worthy of praise...the upgraded the headphones as part of their desperate attempt to mitogate the damage they have alreay done to their consoles release. But meh...included headphones. They will still svck.
Uhm...where did I say Sony was better as a fact based on any kind of morale basis? If I was to do that well, Sony didn't insult their consumers intelligence and try to enforce restrictive DRM policies right out of the gate did they? If you care about your customers, you do what makes them happy and continue to get them to spend their money. Clearly Microsoft is struggling with that part of the whole 'business' aspect.

If both companies could get away with it would they probably do the same thing? Probably. However we know Microsoft did try to do it in todays industry. Indicating they are mildly incompetant to say the least, meanwhile Sony seems to be right on the ball.

Yeah, it goes back to Sony again... i had more fun on the PS2 then the XBOX.

MS did really well with 360 and it was my fav console (also have PS3)

I'll be going for the PS4 this time around and i don't trust MS anymore, so no One for me.

Ps the only way (that's how i bought the XBOX.... to play Fable) i buy a One is if it has an exclusive that i really want to play.

I don't really know, their PR team just botched the entire opening so all of the interesting perks of the system basically looked like total garbage. Then they reversed all of that and now the PS4 and One are just fancy versions of the previous console

I don't think there will be a huge defining feature on these consoles like Xbox Live and PS Network were to last gen.

I'll probably end up getting an Xbox in a few years though when it is cheaper.

One pro of the One is that every single console is a development kit or something, so anyone who owns one could create a game for it. Sony requires you pay $2500 for one.

What it could mean is that mods will be brought to console games though, that would be cool.

I was planning to get an Xbox One since it was announced, and I'm still planning on getting one.

It's unwise to count your chickens before they hatch. ;)

A good number of people who come to the store I work at haven't realize they changed their policies. As far as numbers go, PS4 pre-orders are falling off, I haven't seen our numbers in a while though, but we haven't opened up Xbox One pre-orders in a while.

From what I remember though, it's pretty close. Probably 55-60% PS4 and 40-45% Xbox One. Basically Microsoft is launching where Sony was last generation.

I also find it hilariously depressing how anti-Xbox One this community is. You guys do realize that, even as a PC, PS4, or Xbox One gamer, competition is a good thing, right? And for people who don't trust Microsoft now that they changed their policies... Goodness, will you never be satisfied? You complain to them and tell them to change their policies, and then you complain and say how untrustworthy they are because they did exactly what they thought you wanted them to do.

http://www.polygon.com/2013/7/24/4553842/so-how-much-does-it-cost-to-develop-for-playstation-4 The PS4 Development kit will be available for free for a year though, then it will be $2500.

The possibility of mods is just my speculation.
