Todd Howard on multiplayer

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 12:31 pm

Ha, I misread it as 'Todd Howard in multiplayer'. Kinda expecting all sorts of inventive yet gruesome what-will-you-do-to-Todd-when-you-meet-him suggestions.

Carry on then.
Impale him and take his armor and weapons :P

Is making a thread like that against the rules?
Also did spears and crossbows exist during that era?

This should be sticky'd. At least I think it should be. A lot of people have the misconception that Bethesda is making this. I remembered that quote and it's part of the reason why I don't fear this game.

Same here.

And the fact they think it will ruin TES...

The Thuum can be learned if not dragonborn. It will probably be one of the higher level skills.

I dont think there will be anymore single player games in TES universe simply because that would compete with the MMO. Instead Todd and BGS will work on Fallout and new single player games.

The sheer amount of fans to the single player games will obviously buy an SP game despite competing with the MP game.

Im not sure. The MMo is a huge investment economicaly and releasing a new game with the same name in the tittle will most likely cripple one or the other. I have yet to see any games that have a MMO and a single player game withing the same universe.

Why have only one cash cow when you can have two?

Plus, I don't think the next Elder Scrolls will come out until 2017, so self competition is no worry.

They released Skyrim. They started both games in the same year.

I'm not afraid it will kill TES, but I'm afraid it will kill...some mysteries. I'd rather have Bethesda and only them design the parts of Tamriel which are yet to be seen.

Agreed. I'm not too bothered about the development of such a game per se, as I have no interest at all in playing a franchised MMO*, but I am a bit worried about the possible impact on lore, general flavour, and fanbase expectations for future games.

(*It seems to me that most MMOs based upon existing IPs succeed only in "cheapening" their predecessors- much in the same way other people might feel a good book is "ruined" by a poorly executed - if well intentioned - film adaption. I may sound petty saying this, but it's my honest opinion.)

There is something seriously wrong! Brainwashing, Abduction, replaced with an evil clone?

There is no other explanation then this. I cannot believe that Todd would allow to change the Elder Scroll Sandbox-Game-Style into a WoW-Theme-Park Clone. Since the Hero Engine produces 100% WoW Clones - all of them cheap and mediocre at best - there is no other possible outcome(just look at http://www.heroengine.com/spotlights/faxion-online/...).

Are you still alive todd? What happened do you? I just can't believe that you would give your belief and your crown juwels so easy away.

I don't think that Todd has any connection with TESO. He works for a completely different studio under the Zenimax umbrella.

Todd Howard still makes TES. Todd Howard does not make TESO.

Remember this quote from Todd Howard?

"You can never say never to anything like that," he admitted, "but it's not what our focus is. This type of game is where our hearts are, what we get excited about, and that's what we want to focus on. We don't want to lose that focus and we never want to sacrifice anything in the singleplayer game just to have it be multiplayer."

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/11/skyrim-to-have-multiple-dlc-releases-powerful-buckets/

This is to people who are afraid the MMO will kill the main Elder Scrolls games.

Not only that, but Bethesda has made clear that they are heading into the console market, full steam. I think this is a natural split - ZOS will make the PC, MMO TES, and Bethesda will continue to push out console TES titles and DLC.

While BGS has nothing to do with that, it will be difficult to market the game without Todd's sponsorship. He can't be overseeing things without being supportive. For that he'll need to change his perspective on things or at least conceal how he truly feels about this effort. It was clearly not his decision to make a multiplayer spin-off, otherwise he would never have publicly stated his concerns about sacrificing single-player elements.

Bethesda's involvement is outlined in the Game Informer article. But yes, ZeniMax Online is a completely different team. They're working on Elder Scrolls Online. Right now Todd and the rest of Bethesda Game Studios are focused on Dawnguard and Skyrim updates.

My favorite part is everybody thinks that BGS will just drop single player TES games, when just a few days before the MMO announcement they announced the first huge DLC for Skyrim

Fears were not about Skyrim; they are about the games that are supposed to come after.

The fears are about them dropping any interest in the single player Elder Scrolls games. We have no evidence to suggest this. In fact we have only seen evidence to the contrary.
