I saw this on a Facebook 'question' the other day. A friend of mine answered 'one' and I've been attempting to prove to her that she's wrong ever since.

Actually you know what yeah I did get it wrong

Multiplication and division aren't hard placed in PEMDAS

It's whatever comes first in the equation that you do first

so

6/2(1+2)

6/2(3)

3(3)

9

Yep. At least that is the way I learned it back in the olden days before computers and scientific calculators.

Yeah, it's 9. Multiplication and division are equal and are done from left to right. At least that's how I've learned it. :P

I hate math. I am no good at math. So, I will copy (like I used to do in school) from IGuess and say 9.

PEMDAS people

Parentheses- 1+2=3

then multiplication and division are interchangeable, you go left to right so

6/2=3

3x3=9

I have failed two math course in my life and I was able to get it correct

It's 9.

6÷2(1+2) is the same as 6÷2*(1+2). Which equals 9.

Hmm, strange. I said 1, but now that I tried it on my calculator it says 9. . .

:swear:

This is exactly why I got a B in the Math O Level.

This very weird. My calculator (casio fx-7400G Plus) says 1. If I can get a decent pic I'll upload it.

Multiply out the brackets first. If I didn't do that in algebra I would get everything hilariously wrong. The answer is 1.

I voted 9. I was taught to do it this way:

(1+2) = 3

6/2 = 3

3(3) = 9 or 3x3 = 9

So I get 9.

Some calculators don't do the order of operations correctly, you have to use a certain method for them to work properly.

Deal with it. :P

Answer is 1.

1+2=3.

2x3=6.

6÷6=1.

What's so hard about it?

Are you guys nuts? Why is this even "controversial"

Multiplication is done from left to right, not right to left

6 divided by 2 = 3
3 x 3 = 9

I'm truly amazed at how many people on this forum, who are supposedly over the age of 13, can't do this properly. And how sure they are that the wrong answer is right.

Aren't you supposed to get rid of the parentheses in the first place, not simply do what's inside them?

Everyone who said the answer is 1 (and apparently there's a bunch of you), you fail.

Division and multiplication have the same priority. When more operations in an expression have the same priority and it is not specified (by parenthesis) which operation should be done first, the expression is evaluated in left-to-right order. Therefore, in this example, the division is done first (6 is divided by 2) and the result of that is multiplied by the result of (1+2).

Well [censored]. When you put the 6 over the 2 like that it's obvious.

My baaaaaaaaaad.

The way i've been taught math says it's nine:

6/2(1+2) = 6/2*3 = 3*3 = 9

My pastor uncle says it's "anything I want it to be". :cold:

When I do order of operations, I get 9. I think someone showed a fraction and got 1 and I could see how one would get that if it were not set up in a typical left-right format (to do this would change the equation entirely to 6÷(2(1+2)), but given that it's shown this way, I do the parenthesis first, then start left to right since it's all multiplication and division thereafter. Some people I see doing parenthesis then doing multiplication afterwards with the number next to where parenthesis was and that's way wrong.
