Twilight Sparkle has left Ponyville

Peter Molyneux, the much-loved creative at the head of Lionhead Studios, the Fable series and games like Black and White, has tweeted that he will be leaving the developer and Microsoft behind to join a new company.

"I have left the lovely amazing Microsoft and lionhead," reads the tweet. "Now for something really amazing, scary and brave a new company called 22 Cans." Nothing is known of this new venture yet.

This news comes just one day after the announcement of a new game in the Fable series, Fable Heroes for XBLA.

This is Molyneux's first Tweet since November last year - seems he only uses it for things that are REALLY important. We've reached out to Molyneux and Microsoft for comment.

Interesting, could be a very good thing for the Fable series. What do you all think of this?

I know another dev left to form his own studio too (forum name was "The Bag"), and another went into some non game related job (Sam (cant remember his last name)).

Lionhead is a sinking ship.

Now with PM in another place, I will see if he was the one too blame. But given him leaving, Im not so sure. He wanted too make 7 Fable games...
If it turns out he is the problem, all of my hate, for ruining fable.

I wonder what will happen too the other devs I knew from looking at their forums, they seemed pretty important too.
Speaking of which, I wonder how their forum is reacting, allthough it was slow for a very long time, so I doubt I will see much.

Some other big people left the company recently if I remember correctly. I guess they aren't happy with the direction of the Fable series and I can't blame them.

That's not entirely a dooming announcement. Alan Wake's XBLA title is pretty good IMO.

As for Lionhead, after hearing this I am automatically reminded of Team Ninja falling apart. That being said, I can't say I'm disappointed with PM leaving. Fable 2 was so much of a letdown from what he preached it was going to be, and 3 was one of the worst games I've ever played.

I don't really understand what they're doing with the Fable franchise: it has a catchy name, and the first two games have a good reputation. Why ruin the brand with cheap kinect and xbla games? It looks like they're trying to kill the franchise, and not even for much short term profit since I don't think these spin off games are going to sell well.

I guess the writing was on the wall ever since Microsoft bought Lionhead; I doubt it's a good environment for independent, creative minds to flourish (by which I mean the Lionhead staff in general, not specifically Molyneux.) The huge delay getting the PC version of Fable 3 to market suggested to me at least that there must've been some problems going on there. Of course we'll never get to hear what those problems were since everyone involved will be up to their necks in non-disclosure agreements...

Hopefully Fable 4 will be more like 2 as I did not like 3!

Most of the people who make modern games are business men, not gamers. Peter molynuex used to be a gamer, like 20 years ago. I bet if he does play games now they are casual games for like 5mins. of course this is all just assumption after playing his crappy fable series, all installments.

Ok a bit harsh, I respect that he tried something different at least.

Why would being a gamer 20 years ago (or being involved with the Fable series) mean he only plays "casual games for 5 minutes"?

"Todd, we would like to talk about Kinect. No? Shame, ah well."
"Pete, we would like to talk about Kinect. No? Shame, pity you have no choice in the matter."
Just a thought.

Wonder what Fable will be like now, if the studio will still carry it on, that is.

How much longer does this guy get to bank on a name he made two decades ago?

Populous and Dungeon Keeper (1) are his only good titles.

Whatever. Good luck to him and his twenty toucans.

I think it's quite a lot of people at RARE and Lionhead that aren't pleased that Microsoft force them to do kinect stuff and try to copycat Nintendo or whatever. The latest Fable Heroes announced earlier this week look horrible.

Two excellent british game studios that stopped being excellent after Microsoft bought them.

I've long been of the opinion that "our way or no way" tends to be the regime that people are expected to work under once absorbed into the Microsoft collective.

About time, although I think it's too late for The Fable Franchise. Lionhead could still be saved but they would need a miracle and I don't see it happening.
