Underwhelmed...

Post » Fri Nov 16, 2012 10:11 pm

So I can see I'm not the only one who we less than thrilled with this DLC. Don't get me wrong, the 3 extra houses are actually really cool, and the option for different wings was pretty neat, but really that's where the customization ends. I get that it's difficult to create models and textures that lend themselves to true home design and layout. So I get that for the most part the house components have to be static, but for the love of Talos, why do I have to spend hours of effort to progressively procure/earn what I basically can buy in the major cities?

I can deal with the structure being pre-determined modules, but what is really killing this DLC is that the contents of the house modules are pre-determined. My only choice in decoration is to not build something; that's not a choice. Why could we not have been presented with a complete list of all interior placeables with the ability to place as we see fit?

This is the way it should have been:
  • We create an item at the workbench.
  • This item has a placement type, be it floor, wall, or ceiling, and a footprint it takes up in said area.
  • When we go to place the item we're presented with a layout view appropriate to the type; top-down for floor, bottom-up for ceiling, etc...
  • We use our controller to move/rotate the item til our heart's content, and place it where we want.
With that kind of power I could easily have spent another 100+ hours decorating my homes, and enjoying myself, rather than slowly letting the gamesas designers put their house on my land.

Yeah, for only $5 I wasn't expecting much. I was actually pleasantly surprised by what we did get. However, it seems like there could have been a few more customization options in my opinion.

I would have liked colour schemes, then again.. breaking something contextual to Skyrim's culture would be a sure fire way to feel disconnected from the game.

I do like that idea. I'm not too upset about the pre-set building locations, but I would like to be able to adjust walls, move furnishings around, put doors where I want, and that kind of stuff.

For any amount of my hard earned money I expect to not face a bait and switch. The announce trailer stated we would be 'designing, building, and maintaining our own home' There's no design except that we get to pick from 3 modules. It further states that the interior workbench contains a large 'variety' of craftable items. There's no variety, it's a laundry list.

If we had been told we were getting 3 modular homes I probably wouldn't be disappointed. I spent 600 points on the 4 living area DLCs for oblivion and was happier because I received exactly what I expected.

Well I agree with the OP, they mentioned customizable homes yet the only differences between my house and yours is the wings we put up and whether or not we build everything decoration wise.

I would have liked to be able to place things like you described. I would have placed things a lot differently in my home, and probably wouldn't have build a lot of the useless shelves(imo). I like having chests and mannequins and trophies. Although I didn't get the trophey room. (yet, next home)

I keep my labs and armoury away from my children, in Hjaalmarch.
They are safe from blades and experiments all the way down in Falkreath :)

Well, with multiple options for each wing, plus outside, there is some customization involved, I suppose. You can choose the house configuration that suits you best. I guess for $5, they could only give you so much.

There isn't much customization. You get the option of a few wings and then some outside effects (that you'll likely never take a second look at).

Other than that, the houses are exactly the same (at least, the two that I built are). Same exact look, color, item placement in rooms, even to the why-is-that-there book on the dining room table.

Why? What's wrong with children playing with nightshade?

What I think I would've been happier with is that the houses change look depending on the area they're in... Kinda annoying that all 3 houses are "Whiterun" house design inside and out, I'd've liked to see a house that was visually similar to Morthal and Dawnstar houses, not Whiterun. Otherwise, I like the game (even if Aela isn't happy with ANY house I took her too with our kid Lucia!), and I'm all kinds of tickled pink with the new food items you can make (now I can finally use those stupid apples), and all the choices (instead of wasting my own money for my less-than-millionaire toons) for the stuff you can make inside using the benches inside!

But it would also be nice to be able to paint your house.... OOOOO, maybe even do effect with the lights! So if I wanted a room to have green, blue, purple, etc colored lights, you can have it be a color effect (think the red from Darkfall Passage)

I'll also add my bit. what was point in putting an endless supply of stone and clay next to your house to mine. But you have to travel to a sawmill to get logs. The only real requirement to build a house is iron and corundum ingots. Other than that you'll build your clone house in no time.

Sorry to hear that you're not liking the DLC, OP.

Personally, I'm having a blast with it.

I hope you find something that may help you realize that it's actually good and a fun addition. But I can understand by your description in your OP that you might feel let down.

This is a perfect example of what happens when people expect too much. All I can say is try to enjoy it for what it is. Think about it. Without this dlc, you'd be stuck with completely non customizable houses with no choice at all. And no kids, or pets!

It's $5.

Honestly, the level of entitlement I see on these forums absolutely stupefies me.

Agree with both, actually.

But as I alluded to in my diplomatic post, you can't please everyone...

best 5 dollar investment ive made in a long time, so far ive built my three houses and fully decorated 1 ive now got almost 50 hours of gameplay out of it, Bethesda some may not agree but like i said in another post you have hit a frikking home run in my book with this DLC the ONLY thing i wish for is maybe a few more options as to which wings go where instead of only 3 choices per side and a few more building lots maybe a bit less home invasions.

P.S get real 5 dollars buys you one beer at the bar and that lasts you how long an hour? 5 dollars for 50 hours of gameplay and im not done yeah its worth it

For the most part I love the DLC

Though only thing that really bugs be about the Hearthfire. Is the fact you cannot change the trophies in the trophy room.

It does look good, but some things could have been done a lot better.
More places to place rooms and more customization inside and out was definitely needed.

It's fine, but not great.

I think they only charged $5 when they realised it wasn't that much. If it had some kind of interior editor, where you could move furniture around and place things where you wanted them it would be worth a lot more.

Think of the track editor in trials evolution - is that not modding on the xbox? You can even DL other people's tracks.

Still 400 MP is fair.
