Unofficial Pony Wars: The Pony Republic Thread II

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 3:03 pm

I must confess that while I loved playing KOTOR I was very dissapointed that they released a MMO.

I was thinking about buying it, but I got put off by the £40 price for the game (which I think is too much as you will also be paying monthly)

It is a shame though as my partner did buy it and I created a character on his account. I did enjoy it, but I doubt I will play another paying MMO again.

Ok, I just bought the game, and I'm trying to make an account on the website, but it keeps telling me "Sorry, you do not meet the criteria to create an account at this time" every time I try to create an account.

Does anyone know why this is happening, and what could I do to fix it?

Nevermind, I fixed the problem.

I have an operative at level 19 and I must say this game is pretty good, especially the stories. I must say the story is really going near on par with BG 2. But the dialogue selections are still full of Bioware's old flaws since ME. Too many times I had to press esc key to reset conversation because the character wasn't saying what I wanted say.

Surprising enough, I managed to solo Black Talon at level 12. I didn't know how to get to DK and thought Black Talon was my only way there and I didn't know what flashpoints were back then. Kaylio only survived the first boss fight, then I soloed every other boss dot kiting heal and popped about 5 medpacs in total.

I say this game is truly an mmoRPG, full of RP elements with lots of possible grouping opportunities. The social and grouping mechanism has too much shadow of WoW, but they are added a lot more new elements there to make it unique. They promised lots of fine tuning features for this and I say it can only get better.

I'm on Gar Daragon (I think), AP RP server, character name is Syrr for my operative and Valine for my sith. I don't mind making new characters on an american server just to meet up with you guys. Since I'm on shift duty that means I could be online at any hours depending on my roster.

Having played this game since beta and leveling 2 characters to 50 (should hit 50 today with my vanguard) I will say the game is interesting.

SWTOR aims at taking the MMO genre to the next level where you have an overarching story mode for your character. In essence this feels like a single player game with MMO concepts behind it similarly to what you see in Guild Wars or so i've heard. The eight classes have their own story line that takes them from level 1 to the ending level 50 current cap. Every aspect of the game has a story behind it which is very reminiscent of Everquest/Everquest 2 where you can be running the standard fetch, kill, and/or collect mission. However, the story behind it is animated leaving you a reason to sit and listen if you want.

Each class is unique for their side, but they can be considered carbon copies of their light side counter-part. Sith Inquisitor and Jedi Consular being an example where 1 shoots lightning the other...well shoots air + rocks. Some classes are more interesting than others such as the smuggler vs imperial agent. With your take no prisoner gunslinger you are a dual wielding machine taking charge. As a sniper you deal extreme high damage and pay the price with charge/casting timers + long waits. However, that upfront extreme damage is pretty sick since you can nearly 1 shot some creatures/NPCs.

Overall i've found the game enjoyable, but it is lacking in the content department. That being said I am giving Bioware leeway here due to several factors:

1. MMO Games in General - These are never easy to make since you have multiple things to worry about along with the normal release game problems. Have to maintain servers, fix bugs/glitches/exploits, maintain balance between classes, etc... .

2. Release Woes - In every single MMO i've played at the beginning there are always people bemoaning it saying "This should have been released at the start." With game update 1.2 on the horizon they are releasing tons of new stuff which people are loving, but already berating. Examples are rated warzones/battle grounds, Legacy System, Custom UI content, Logs, Advanced character customization (same model appearance across the board), and new operation (raids), flash point (group zone), and War Zone (Battle ground). People are mainly complaining about the WZs where there's only 3 of them and some hating Huttball (think American football).

3. New Kid - With #1 and #2 it's hard to be a new kid on the block releasing your first MMO even with professionally experienced staff. Really hoping that the game doesn't come back to bit BW in the butt.

Still reserving "true" judgment for the game, but as it stands right now I would give it a generous 8 out of 10. It's a diamond in the rough that requires a good polishing to make it shine. As we all know SWG is dead and buried thanks to SOE so this will be our SW MMO. If they work on it correctly the devs can make the game a very great addition to compete with WoW (screw the pandas :P ). However, I will be keeping a heavy eye on it to make sure the game doesn't become stale.

Still playing this game constantly, although I've actually stopped following most of the main game content (after getting my second 50 character) and have instead spent my time roleplaying with other players and various guilds. Lot of intrigue going down on the Progenitor server, particularly around Nar Shaddaa... As good as the "singleplayer" quests are, playing custom storylines with other characters is so much more enjoyable, like being in a live-action radio play. Yesterday there was an enormous Jedi tournament where more than 40 players showed up (some to fight, others just to cheer) and using a mixture of text-emotes and ingame dueling everyone put on a great show. And this is to say nothing of the tales of bounty hunters, scoundrels, agents, and cut-throats on the Smuggler's Moon, or reports of Imperial forces uniting under a common banner... If you're looking for active RP, the Progenitor has it in spades.

I've got to say, I completely disagree with Titan. He is, of course, entitled to his own opinion.

But the things he's saying TOR lacks (for instance, a group finder) are things that most MMO's don't have right away. He's pretty much looking at MMO's that have undergone years of patching and improvements (games like WoW) and saying 'TOR doesn't have this'. Whilst that's his opinion, and I'd never call him out for stating his opinion, I do have to disagree. TOR is an incredible game...it is missing a lot of features. But it's only on revision 1.1! WoW didn't get a dungeon finder for ages, despite people on the forums begging for it.

I think the problem is that all these people that are playing through MMO's at the moment are, essentially, playing through on Easy Mode. I'd pay money to see most of today's WoW players go back to Vanilla and cope with the lack of noob-friendly features...I don't think it'd happen. It used to be part of the fun, trying to get a group together for a dungeon...or trying to get a load of people together for the sole purpose of taking down a boss that had a <1% chance to drop a piece of gear.

There are some issues with ganking, but if you don't like that, just play on a PvE server! Problem solved.

New MMO players have no ground to complain. When I joined UO the first thing that happened was someone conned me out of my starting 200 gold, then another player mugged me for my noob gear and left me for dead. :P

Similar things happen on EVE Online on a daily basis. :P

I'm assuming you're Rep? I've been looking for a good RP server/Guild. Still haven't found one, but with the description you typed out I think I'll give this server a go.:D

Mostly Rep so far (a Jedi, naturally) but I have to say I'm quickly falling in love with my Imperial Agent too. The intrigue and mysteries on the Empire side are getting quite juicy. :D

Also, there's a new event coming up: a swoop-racing league, being sponsored by Terunda the Hutt (a very good roleplayer) with a grand prize of 500,000 credits, plus fame beyond your wildest dreams (and runner-up prizes of course, etc.) It'll go on for a few months, racing different routes across various planets, with an overall ranking for the season. IC bullying and underhanded skullduggery is allowed, although if Terunda finds out he'll most likely want a cut of your profits... or, if he favors the pilot, might just send his goons after you. :P

It's RP concepts like this that really make it such an interesting place to roleplay!

This! It's such a diverse and well established Universe, that almost any character you come up with to RP will fit with something already existing in lore. That's why I prefer this to WoW, even though I play both.

How is the Republic/Empire split on most servers? I remember when I played SWG, we Imperials were outnumbered about 4/1, which made PvP somewhat challenging.

By what I've seen across two servers (one PVP and the other RP-PVE) the imperials outnumber the reps 3-to-1, generally. Mostly due to a terrible imbalance at the start of the game (whereby imps were farming reps for easy kills) and also because they have the best tailors. :P

I got to beta test it and it was great fun (I got to level 28 just during the beta test weekend). Then when I was offered a free trial, I jumped at it. Unfortunately, it seems that the trial has a level 15 cap.

Right now I'm weighing whether or not I want to buy it.
