- Please try to keep this thread for asking about existing setups. Upgrade questions come in the territory with these kinds of threads, but if i drags and fills up the topic, a stop will be put to it. If you want an in-depth PC build/buy recommendation or laptop recommendation, please use the http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1541774-the-community-tech-thread-no-152/ instead.

- People can post questions related to their system in this thread. However, this is not a crash issue questions sort of thread. Best to just create your own separate topic to ask about your crash issues as it will just drown out here in this topic. This topic is just to see if your hardware is enough to run the game.

- Do not post here if you are going to brag about where you stand on the GPU list or if you are going to criticize other member's systems. This is not the place to say "I have so and so card and looks like I will totally max this game out hahaha"....or...."ooohhh, my system is so much better than yours!!11!!1!!" Comments like those either clutter up this thread unnecessarily and/or will only get you negative responses. Please keep it to yourself. <_<

- We will appreciate it if you could link to this (and any subsequent) thread in new threads people make about hardware requirements. And, that you use the report function to report these new threads to the moderators.

- Other threads will be closed and referred to this one. Once this reaches 200 posts, we'll continue in a new one and leave a link to the old thread.

Ok, let's see how it goes.

OFFICIAL SPECS RELEASED! Read Hardware Guide below to see where you stand.

Fallout 4
Desktop Video Card (GPU) List and Performance Level Predictions

(3rd Pass, Subject to changes/updates)

Compiled by Tigs ( Tig Ol Bitties)

Notes:

- With the game released now and benchmarks turning up, the requirements are unsurprisingly rather overstated for the game. I've honestly never been a fan of how Bethesda do their system requirement specs. Just in the minimum requirements alone, there are large performance gaps with what's listed. A Phenom X4 945 with a GTX 550 Ti is quite a bit of a step down from a i5 2300 and a Radeon 7870 setup. It doesn't make sense for all of them to be under the same category. Alas,I hope this guide will help some determine where their system/hardware stands and I will update this list accordingly when I find more benches on the reality of what people can get away with hardware-wise.

Here are some benches that have come forth so far:

http://www.gamersnexus.net/game-bench/2177-fallout-4-pc-video-card-fps-benchmark-all-resolutions

http://www.gamersnexus.net/game-bench/2182-fallout-4-cpu-benchmark-huge-performance-difference

http://www.pcgameshardware.de/Fallout-4-Spiel-18293/Specials/Test-Benchmark-vor-Release-1177284/
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-fallout-4-performance-anolysis

- While the requirements do not explicitly state what DX version the game requires, there's plenty of evidence at this point to show that it requires a DX11 or better capable video card. Anything less or older than a GeForce GTX 4xx or a Radeon 5xxx series card won't even be able to get into the game. Only logical solution is to upgrade your video card to a DX11 or better card.

- I am borrowing a hierarchy list that was compiled by some fine folks at OCN as I find it to be quite accurate, but did add my own edits in between here and there. Modification Notes are added to the list to predict performance levels of this game and these are very subject to change when real benchmarks come forth. http://www.overclock.net/graphics-cards-general/502403-graphics-card-ranking-5th-time-last.html is the list borrowed if you are curious. Large credit given to Anth0789, TheSandman, Astroz, NrGx, and J3r3my who helped create and maintain that list. And a big acknowledgement goes out to a swell member that hasn't been here a while, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?app=members&module=list, who has provided pretty much the layout for guides like these in the past. If you don't see your card, feel free to ask.

- This list does not include CPU performance. Early reports is that the game does run on straight dual-core CPUs (2core, 2 threads). However, the game is very multi-core aware and perhaps even a CPU resource hog, so you'd preferably want to be in the quad-core territory as the game benefits greatly with quads and higher. General guideline is you should be relatively fine to run the game with a chip from one of the following series...

- Intel: Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, Core i3, i5, and i7...reports from users of modern Intel Pentium have been positive as well

- AMD: Athlon X3/X4, Phenom X2/X4, AMD A4, A6, A8, A10, and FX

- Anything less than these may suffer/lag. Celeron, Pentium 4, and Sempron users shouldn't bother playing.

Here is a recent benchmark from GamerNexus to show just how sensitive the game is to dual-core and quad-core CPUs (link at beginning of notes)

- While the reqs state a 8GB RAM requirement, there are plenty of users out there at this point that have managed with 4GB. Depending on your system's other hardware specs, it may cause lags and require some dropping of settings.

- If you are using a laptop, you can check your GPU and CPU on the following lists to compare with the requirements:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphics-Cards.13849.0.html?type=&sort=&deskornote=2&or=0&search=&month=&benchmark_values=&gpubenchmarks=0&professional=0&archive=0&dx=0&multiplegpus=0&showClassDescription=1&condensed=0&showCount=1&showBars=1&showPercent=1&gameselect%5B%5D=336&gameselect%5B%5D=332&gameselect%5B%5D=329&gameselect%5B%5D=316&gameselect%5B%5D=314&gameselect%5B%5D=112&gpu_fullname=1&codename=1&architecture=1&pixelshaders=1&vertexshaders=1&corespeed=1&shaderspeed=1&boostspeed=1&memoryspeed=1&memorybus=1&memorytype=1&directx=1&opengl=1&technology=1&daysold=0
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html?type=&sort=&deskornote=2&restrict_architecture=&maxTDP=&or=0&search=&month=&benchmark_values=&gpubenchmarks=0&archive=0&dx=&condensed=0&condensed=0&showCount=1&showBars=1&showPercent=1&3dmark06cpu=1&cinebench10_s=1&cinebench10_m=1&cb11_single=1&cb11=1&cinebench_r15_single=1&cinebench_r15_multi=1&superpi1m=1&superpi2m=1&superpi32m=1&wprime_32=1&wprime_1024=1&dhrystone=1&whetstone=1&winrar=1&x264_pass1=1&x264_pass2=1&truecrypt_aes=1&truecrypt_twofish=1&truecrypt_serpent=1&geekbench2=1&geekbench3_single=1&geekbench3_multi=1&passmark_cpu=1&sunspider=1&cpu_fullname=1&codename=1&series=1&l2cache=1&l3cache=1&fsb=1&tdp=1&mhz=1&turbo_mhz=1&cores=1&threads=1&technology=1&architecture=1&64bit=1&daysold=1

Basically just search the card or CPU you have there. If available, The Witcher 3 benchmarks can provide a decent idea of what to expect for the GPU. If not, then the link to your card's description may mention a desktop equivalent that you can cross check back here. The CPU list is a more generalized comparison with benchmark tools to give an idea of each CPUs horsepower. If you cant find what you're looking for, just ask here.

- Intel Integrated Graphic Chipsets are for the most part garbage for gaming. The hardware implementation to handle shaders required for these games are heavily skimped on with older chipsets (predating Intel's HD 3000). These are more meant for business applications and general usage as opposed to gaming. Strong chance you may not be able to run the game or will crash frequently at some point.

There are now several videos out there with users getting the game to run with Intel HD chipset 5000 and higher apparently, but it doesn't come without its own issues either for many. You are better off with something else if possible. Perhaps these two links will help for those persistent to try:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EEyD1mvSXE

https://www.reddit.com/r/lowendgaming/comments/3sf7ea/i_did_it_how_to_run_fallout_4_on_intel_hd/

- There are various monitor resolutions out there and the amount of pixels to be rendered does have an effect on performance...the higher the resolution, the more your video card has to work to render all those extra pixels. I can't be bothered to cover settings for each resolution, so I am basing this list on the more common one for gaming these days...1080p (1920x1080). If your resolution is a step lower than this (1680x1050), then your performance will be slightly better than what's indicated in the list. If it's higher, than obviously can be worse....YMMV.

- Lastly, must make mention that Can You Run It websites rarely get PC hardware assessments correct, especially when it comes to the CPU. Their anolysis dont have any understanding of architectural improvements between generations and they merely compare frequency numbers. I wouldnt rely on them or anything similar at all to give a proper assessment.

:)

Without further ado, here is the hierarchy list based on what the reqs are now....

Color Codes:
AMD
Nvidia

Intel

It is a long list, but press ctrl F and a search box should pops up. Simply search the model number of your GPU and click on the 'up/down' or 'find/search' buttons.

Egad!!: I'm fairly certain these will give you at least Ultra Settings. Gets more to the max levels if more near the top of the list.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Low Settings: Mostly cards from years past, but they've still got some power in them and with the right tweaks, may be able to enjoy FO4. 512MB VRAM cards here would be a concern however and monitor resolution probably would have to be taken way down.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Below Low Settings: Mostly cards from years past. This is the area where upgrading should strongly be considered. Or just get it for the XB1/PS4. Generally weak and lacking in VRAM. Settings and resolution would likely be turned way down to barely run. The further down this list section you go, the more you really should reconsider playing this game for the PC.

Fuggedaboutit: Cards from years past. These cards either don't have DX11 support and/or are just too damn old and weak. If you still have one of these, be looking to upgrade possibly more than just the video card.

Hey so i was told to disable the intel HD 4600 from BIOS. Well i do not know how to enter bios since f12 f2 and esc do not work. However i disabled it from the device manager. This however, caouses the game just to run at 4k. Obviously my poor 960m cannot run 4k so it is laggy as hell. Is there a way to fix it? I can F4 but only in windowed mode where it is super tiny.

Couldnt you just try lowering the resolution...whether its through Windows, the game, or even both?? You dont have to run it at 4K.

Here goes, I know next to nothing about Windows PCs, so bear with me. this is the information off of my "DxDiag"

- Operating System: Windows 8.1 64-bit

- Processor: AMD FX™-6300 Six-core Processor (6CPUs), ~3.5GHz

- Memory: 8192MB RAM

- Hard Disk Space: <-can't find that

- Video: AMD Radeon R7 200 series (?)

Edit: sorry more relevant information

I have FO4 on steam and it starts loading for 2 seconds, then closes itself with no error message.

There are several R7 200 series cards...240, 250, 250X, 260, 260X, and 265. Desirably would want to be 260X and higher as those would give you medium.

The rest are low or below low settings cards

May have to go into the .ini file to force alter it. I'm sure in one of the tweak guides available, it will show you where you can do this.

Hello everyone!
I have laptop with : Windows 8.0 64bit, Intel I5 3210m 2.5 Ghz, Nvidia Geforce 635m 2gb, 8gb RAM, latest version nvidia drivers. Low settings, resolution 1366x768.
Ist it normal, that i have 7-10 FPS in the game? I mean, may be its a mistake with optimization or something else... Or F4 will not support old mobile configurations?

Yes, it's "normal" for this game to run that bad with your hardware. Deferred renderer kills performance of any cards with slow vram.

Want to share my finds about the game requirements. You may run it with 8 Gb RAM installed, but game need about 8.5 Gb of FREE memory, not total memory. Otherwise it will use swap file and all ssd users must be warned about that. Because i worked in gamedev i do know how properly compute minimal system requirements and Fallout 4 must have 10 Gb min for Win7 or +1 for Win8-10.

You shouldn't disable the Intel graphics at all !!!

What you mean with free ram, not total ram ???

Free Ram. This memory has nothing at all in it. It’s not being used and it contains nothing but zeros.

Total Ram. This is the total amount of physical memory available to Windows.

According to this, Fallout doesn't need even 10GB of total ram.

I'm afraid your GPU is weak for this game...

Sad(
I know many people, who have much weaker stationary GPU and CPU, but they have at least 30 fps... I think its problem with mobile chipset.

What you mean with stationary GPU and CPU, a desktop right?

If it's so, a Laptop can't match a desktop PC.

Cant expect much with a 635M. Here's a video someone took with a laptop using the card:

Even he finds the performance inconsistent and poor to be playable.

Hi

I am considering buying a new PC, but I'd like to know if my existing (oldish) PC could handle the game, and if so on what level. Your advice is much appreciated.

8GB RAM

Win 7 Pro

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz overclocked @ 4.00GHz

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5970 OC 2048MB GDDR5

Thanks

Still a rather decent system that can obtain high at 1080p. The Radeon 5970 is no slouch. That overclock on the cpu helps. If you want better, just need a new video card actually

It will be playable. !!! But your weakest link is your FX-4350.

Consider that: with an i7-6700 and an R9 380 you will get approx. 44-55 fps (Min - Avg) [1080p Ultra quality]

Fallout 4 scalling performance depence on an fast processor.

Going from an i7-6700 to an FX-4350 you will loss more that 50% of fps performance.

Summing it up, i thing you will be able to play at 1080p if you lower the graphics quality settings.

That's the nearest i could found actually...

------

Also to notice, the performace loss going down from an i7-6700K to an i5-4690K is approx. 15 fps.

Please be aware that even if your PC can run the game, it only tailors for specific keyboard hardware. If you're using anything other than a QWERTY keyboard e.g. AZERTY keyboard or you are disabled or are left handed you will find it very difficult if not impossible to play the game due to reserved key bindings.

Hi again,

i've now upgrade RAM up to 8GB

my System now:

CPU: Core 2 Quad Q9550 2,80GHz

GPU: nVidia GTX 280 1GB 512Bit

RAM: 8GB (4x 2GB) PC3 10600/DDR3 1333MHz

OS: Win7 x64

Fallout crash at start like before.

CPU is as good as i5-2300 (4x 2,80GHz)

GPU is better as GTX 550 Ti, but driver is 341.92 from 10. Nov 2015.

Driver 358.91 from 09. Nov 2015 is for GeForce 400 series and above. Could this be the issue?

Grafic-settings: low, windowed/borderless

nVidia Streamer Service is disable

fallout4.exe start as admin

Go with the FX-8350. You should have a gain from +20 fps.

------------

The FX-9590 will give you another 12 fps more.

But i don't thing it's a worth buy, because there is an essential price difference between those two. Also after this processor you will have a difficult time finding an even faster AMD processor.

There is no other FX processor. It's the end of the line...

To give you an example , even a *i3-4360 is almost the same fast as the FX-9590 on Fallout 4. Unbelievable, i know. !!!

But at least on an Intel platform there are dozens other (much faster) CPUs to use.
