Unofficial "Will My PC Run Skyrim" Thread #58 w hard

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 2:45 pm

Just got this machine a week ago, want to know how well it'd run Skyrim.

CPU: Intel Core i7-2600 @3.4 GHz (four cores)
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6670 1GB GDDR5
HDD: 1TB @7200RPM
RAM: 8GB DDR3 Dual-channel

Hovering around medium-high levels.

Just a FYI, my laptop has

i5 2430
6gb ram
Intel 3000
5400 hard drive
Windows 7 64bit
Lenovo

With medium settings, Skyboost, 12xx resolution, FAA off, and everything else set to medium/low except texture quality(high), everything so far has been very, very smooth. Rivers look fantastic. Didn't skip a beat at all in blizzards or dragon fights.

Of course I'm stuck at 1.4.21 because of Skyboost and won't be able to add any visual mods, but just amazed at the quality of Skyrim that allows laptops like mine to do well.

Why are you "stuck" at 1.4? You did not even need Skyboost/TESVAL since 1.3 and 1.5 is probably the best patch right now.

Since 1.4.21 is that last version that Skyboost sort of supports, I was staying there. I would upgrade in a sec if 1.5 has implemented a similar performance helping mechanism as Skyboost. But I'm a little hesitant to upgrade since I can't believe how well my laptop is running Skyrim.

1.5 has implemented a similar performance helping mechanism as Skyboost.

It was implemented in 1.4. You do not need Skyboost anymore

^This. The author himself said so and that is the reason he stopped updating it. The 1.4 compatible version was an experiment he tried to see if he could squeeze out some more, but decided 1.4 did a good enough job.

You should be able to play on high pretty well. Maybe turn down the anti-aliasing to 2x if you need.

haha why do companies/people want to spend so much more on the cpu than gpu. a 2500k would perform identically for significantly less.

As Tig Ol Bitties stated above, the 6670 can do medium/medium-high.

Your store-bought computer (OEM) comes with a low-quality PSU that must be upgraded if you intend to purchase a video card (which is normal for OEM machines).

Your $500 budget is much more than you need. If you go any higher you might as well just build a new computer!

It's highly recommended that you only purchase a high-quality, dependable PSU. You don't want to risk having problems with your new video card. Here's an excellent PSU/GPU combo that fits in your budget comfortably:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139020
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125419

The 7850 can handle Skyrim on Ultra with ease. You may experience some CPU and/or RAM bottlenecking, however. You can replace those with time.

One last thing - your case may be too small for any upgrades. OEM machines are not designed to be customized. You will most likely need to replace the case. Here's an inexpensive but highly recommended Cooler Master case:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119227

You're better off getting a case with good ventilation anyway. Video cards can get pretty warm. And don't worry, it's not actually all that hard to move everything into a new case. It's a lot of work, but as long as you take the necessary precautions of avoiding static shock and working in clean conditions you should be fine. There are dozens of excellent youtube videos to guide you through the building process.
CORSAIR Builder Series CX500 V2 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply

EVGA 01G-P3-1556-KR GeForce GTX 550 Ti (Fermi) FPB 1GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

Thinking of this combo....just trying to save a buck but asking the experts opinion
What should i be looking for to make a good combo?

Corsair CX models are lower quality. It's unwise to use one to power a video card. Saving money will feel good when you buy, but a PSU failure can take other hardware with when it finally dies.

Here's the cheapest PSU I would be willing to hook a 550 Ti up to:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151093

That PSU is much more reliable than a Corsair CX.

BTW Corsair's TX, AX, and HX models are excellent. They unfortunately contract out cheaper manufacturers to build their CX and GX models.

But I would strongly recommend getting a much more solid unit that will last your through multiple video cards. This is one an excellent choice.

Your RAM should be fine. 6gb of DDR2 is plenty. Were you having an issue? I didn't see you mention any problems with RAM in the last two pages.

With a 550 Ti and your system specs, with a reliable PSU, I would expect you to be able to play on high smoothly.

You'll get a solid 60fps on ultra @ 1080p with that.
You will still get occasional fps drops, especially around whiterun etc, mine dips to 55 before bouncing back up to 60

That will be more than enough to run Skyrim at a smooth-as-butter 60 FPS, even at very high settings. :-)

You sure? That GTX 550 Ti is worse than my HD5850, and I get maybe 30 FPS consistently at max settings when my i5 750 processor is overclocked to 3.9 GHz.

It'll run it fine, but I don't know about smooth 60 FPS.

The 550 ti is a pretty weak card, 60fps at high settings is unlikely i'm afraid.
