Unofficial "Will My PC Run Skyrim" Thread #60 w hard

Post » Mon Aug 27, 2012 8:28 pm

My computers about 6 years old,was wondering how well itll run skyrim.

Windows XP
Intel Core 2 Duo e8400 3.00Ghz
Nvidia 9500GT 1gb
4GB Ram

Could i get around medium at 1280x720 res?

That video card is pretty old now. You might not get much above 35-40 FPS with it at that resolution, with drops to 25 here and there, if that suits you.

http://www.comet.co.uk/p/Laptops/buy-ASUS-N55SL-S2019V-Laptop/791580

Am looking at getting this laptop and wondered what sort of graphics level it would play Skyrim at?
  • Processor - Intel Core i7 2670QM - 2.2 GHz
  • RAM - 6 GB
  • Hard Drive - 750 GB
  • Operating System - Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
  • Optical Drive - Blu-Ray
  • Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M Optimus
  • Graphics Memory - 2
Am also looking at this less expensive one and would appreciate some insight as to whether it would run Skyrim (at all?) as it only has an i5 processor

Processor: Intel Core i5
Processor Model: i5-2450
Memory (RAM): 8 GB
Storage (hard drive): 750 GB
Dedicated Graphics: nVidia GT6102 GB

The second laptop looks like just a joke. I'm fairly sure that's a TERRIBLE excuse for video. I'd have to look it up, but neither laptop is any great shakes for gaming (rather few of them are, actually). I have been seeing TONS of trouble people keep on having with the entire line of nVIDIA's "Optimus" butchered GPUs (no front end), and cannot ever recommend those as game-ready.

Yup. The "GT 610" is definitely mere crap:

Thats interesting....I just put the graphics card into YouTube and there's someone playing Skyrim with virtually the same specs as that laptop has and he's got it on high?

Doesn't matter what is on YouTube. They could be using custom settings or other things could be going on.

The 635 and the 610 are not good for games. With Nvidia, you generally want the second number to be 5 at least for decent gaming power.

Am very confused now since the ticket claimed the laptop would play 'all the latest games'.... Think I'll have to do some more research....

Just like a Used Car salesman's pitch "only driven on Sundays by an old lady". Don't believe those lies!

I don't mean to sound argumentative (I promise ;)) but when I look at this site:

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html

And put in the graphics card GForce GT635M, its saying it can run Skyrim up to medium with a frame rate of 44 and could run games like Mass Effect 3 and Crysis 2 on Ultra?

I don't want to sound like I don't believe you - it's just what you're saying seems to contradict what I'm seeing in most other places.

As long as the gamer doesn't run 1080p resolution, the graphics demands of Skyrim are far lower than for other current games out there, just not "low enough" for the worst of trash video solutions.

What I said was I would never suggest that anyone buy an "Optimus", not that some of them don't actually work, the thing is that a huge percentage of them do not work at all for some games. They refuse to start working, leaving the games to try running on the Intel chips that the Optimus relies on to replace the "front end" hardware that's been stripped out to get the costs down.

I do not trust any Optimus. Too many have caused too much annoyance to far too many gamers.

What is most telling is that AMD Radeon graphics cards that work about the same way, switching between Intel's onboard chip when there's no real demand for anything better, work correctly almost every time, so this nVIDIA problem should be easily solvable. What one of the graphics giants can do, the other ought to be able to figure it out as well, but the same complaint has been repeated from the start of the Optimus series, and still happens in the newest of them. (No, not all of them, maybe not a majority, but MANY.)

Wondering if the the computer I'm trying to buy will be able to run Skyrim nicely; Processor: 3rd gen Intel core i7 - 3720qm (2.6ghz with turbo speed up to 3.6ghz, 6mb cache). Memory: 8gb 1600mhz DDR3 SDRAM (2 4gbs). Hard drive: 32gb Solid state drive with a 1tb raid 0 hard drive. Video card: 2gb GDDR5 Nvidia GeForce gtx 675m. It runs at 1920 by 1080 and I have Skyrim from steam. I don't know a lot about what data is relevant or not, so sorry if there is irrelevant data. This also exceeds the rec specs so will it be able to run the hd pack?

You should have no problems at all with this game on that PC.

Thank-you very much for your help, I was a bit worried that it wasn't going to get the job done but you've gotten rid of my worries.
Also, my knowledge of SSDs are very limited. As far I know they're just built into the machine and make things run faster, so if you
could elaborate on them a little better and tell me if there is any way to install Skyrim to the SSD and what difference it would make, if any.

I would like to do so, but I'm one of those who forgets the purpose of this thread isn't "general tech". There is a special place for that in the Community Forum. Read Tig ol' Bitties' comment about what belongs in here a few posts above this point.

I've just bought an Acer 5560G, and I was wondering what level it'd be able to run Skyrim at (if at all, I thought that with the dedicated card and dedicated ram that it could be at least medium, and a friend suggested even higher but I'd be thankful for other opinions)

I'd appreciate any help

Specs:
  • Processor: AMD A6 3420M (Quad-Core 1.5 ghz, 2.4 Turbo, 4mb cache)
  • OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
  • Ram: 4GB (DDR3)
  • HDD: 500GB
  • Optical Drive: DVD-RW
  • Graphics: Dedicated AMD Radeon HD7670M with 1gb dedicated Ram

As well as the various other hardware like sound, WLAN/LAN card etc.

Spec for my current machine:

  • Processor - AMD Phenom II X4 ~3.2 GHz
  • RAM - 4 GB
  • Hard Drive - 465 GB
  • Operating System - Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
  • Graphics - ATI Radeon HD 5450
  • Graphics Memory - 2294MB
Having grown up playing most games several years behind their release dates, I've always wanted to have a computer that can run new games at high settings without a really laggy experience. I've actually deliberately held off buying Skyrim so far because I know my current machine won't be able to handle it as smoothly as I'd like - I have a 1920x1080 HD monitor, at which resolution my graphics card can't even handle Oblivion at full settings without experiencing enough lag to be annoying.

So, I'm going to be buying a new graphics card sometime before Christmas. I'm looking at a buget of around £200 (about $315), so I was thinking maybe a 2GB Radeon HD 6950. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm not at all adept at this sort of thing. I'd also appreciate knowing whether there was anything else about my system which could do with an upgrade if I want to enjoy Skyrim in all its glory?

Well, you won't without RAM.

Mind filling in that detail along with the OS version and if it's a 32-bit or 64-bit OS?

deaths_soul, whilst your around, do you have an educated guess over how well the laptop-system quoted below will play Skyrim?
I chose the system because of the processor and graphics card, so I'm hoping it's enough.

Thanks in advance :)

You'll be fine on high, if not ultra.

Not too familiar with the 7670, so I'll have to say medium and maybe high. That's the best I can say without knowing much about it, to be honest.

Hey everyone, for a while now I've been looking at getting a new PC and getting this game for it as I currently play on Xbox. Anyway I have decided to build my own PC as it seems to come up cheaper and will make a change as this will be my first build. Here are the specs that I am currently looking at;
  • Processor: AMD Bulldozer FX-8 Eight Core 8120 @ 3.1GHz
  • RAM: 8GB DDR3 1333Mhz (2x4GB)
  • PSU: Novatech PowerStation Black Edition 750W PSU
  • Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-970A-DS3 AMD 970 Motherboard
  • GPU: MSI AMD Radeon HD 6970 Lightning 2048MB GDDR5
  • OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
That is the spec as it stands at the moment, so if someone could tell me how well that will cope with the game, or make any suggestions for things to change it would be much appreciated. Also let me know if there is anything else I need to include in the post and I will edit it.

Thanks again for the time

That system would max out the game. Any reason to not go with Intel's SandyBridge or Ivy Bridge CPUs....Bulldozer is an utter disappointment and those 8 cores aren't going to do you much outside of video encoding/rendering/editing. Even the i5 2500K is a much better CPU.
