Unsure about what i've been reading regarding the PC UI.

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 2:54 pm

Hi guys,

i haven't bought the game yet though i'm hoping to do so for the PC, i was going to read the forum reaction to it first, and although i've definitely read a lot more praise than criticism i'm somewhat concerned about the PC user interface, the complaints about it seem to be a significant amount, the problem for me is i've heard anything from "it's only mildly annoying" to "it's downright unacceptable".

So for you guys who have the game on pc, just how bad/good is the UI, is it really that unintuitive or are people just upset that it isn't 100% perfect?

I don't have an xbox or an xbox control pad, so you can see why i am unsure about whether i should go ahead and get it or not.

I've only been able to play about 2 hours so far (god, I can't wait until the kids go to bed tonight), and I can say that it definitely takes some getting used to. That said, I actually kind of like it. I don't know if it is because I play on both PC and consoles (though TES games are always on PC), but I adapted to it pretty quickly, and now that I've gotten a little deeper into it I like it far better than Oblivion's.

Also, don't let the UI scare you away from the game, especially if you are getting it on PC. With all the people upset about it, I can almost guarantee that UI mods will be some of the first you will see.

It can be fairly obnoxious, particularly in vendor menus and dialogue menus. It's useable, but irritating. If you want to play the game, I wouldn't let it stop you, it svcks but it does mostly work most of the time.

Very disappointed however that they left doubled up (and more) functions on the same key rather than separate them. Should be fairly obvious our keyboards have a few more buttons than an xbox controller at this point.

Once you get used to it, its fine. I like it, although I'm curious to see what modders will do to improve things.

Just get a cheap wired 360 controller and wait for mods.

Game is still playable with it. Hotkeys are bugged, though. And one thing to keep in mind is that it's not necessarily about getting used to it as much as it just having an obvious feel of being designed for a controller rather than a keyboard. It's not as in-depth as you may have come across in other games, but it isn't a game breaker (with the exception of bugged hotkeys which can sometimes leave you dragging through the menu for weapons which pauses the combat).

Just don't try to remap your keys... it is a headache that is not worth your time after that

If you want to change keybinds, it's unusable. If you use default, it's merely annoying, poorly designed, clunky, and counter-intuitive.

It's clunky, but not a deal-breaker in my opinion. I'm hoping they'll fix a few things with a patch.

A lot of threads popping up about the PC UI. Honestly, people. It's fine. Enjoy the game.

I think it's fair to say the UI on a PC is workable, but as far as I'm concerned it's way less than ideal. Maybe it's just me, but it's not as intuitive as dragging and dropping ever was and the one thing I really miss is equipping my character by using a paper doll.

Sure, the loving pictures of the individual items when you select them in your inventory is all right, but scrolling down to them gets tiresome for me after a very short time. Also, maybe I missed it, but I'd like it much better if I could sort the items by function (like all the boots together) instead of having them all listed alphabetically. I'd like to easily know when my char is poisoned and things, too, but that's another subject.

To be honest, I didn't actually think Oblivion's UI was great on PC, so it's not as if it's something we're not used to dealing with.

No it's not. Its not working the same for everyone, slick. Should have figured that out by now.

The thing was really bad on initial release but they have already added some fixes to the patch that make it work more like it was designed ( still a bit quirky but manageable now ) -- before the fixes it was bad but now not so much just takes some getting used to.

Well, exactly, slick. It isn't working the same for everyone. It may not be working for you, but it works great for me and others.

I can use both mouse and keyboard in the menus interchangeably and I have no mouse lag. I've played the game for 12 hours now and I, like some others, actually like the UI. I can do things a lot faster than I ever could in Oblivion.

It's fine for some, not for others. That's every game in existence.

Note: I'm not a fan of the UI either, but there's no need to pine, whine or be childish about it.

Personally, I love the UI. Button Remapping/Using the Mouse works very smoothly alongside keystrokes.

But I have seen videos where people have serious problems that I'm not getting - as in "cannot even click the start menu" serious. There's some bug out there that's hit some PC users hard, and until Bethesda has tracked down what has caused it, you're gambling a bit. If it's not bugged on your system, you'll have great fun. If it is, you'll be frustrated until a patch comes around.

There are a couple of bugs, and it has a learning curve, but overall it's not as bad as the complaints

This. Even though I wouldn't play it until I got what I like, it took me near record time to get it all setup. There are limitations and bugs to remapping and just plain bad defaults, cough "favorites".
