Using Twitter

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 9:22 am

I've gotten into a habit of checking/posting on it several times a day. I even have an app tab setup in Firefox so I can keep track of my timeline and whatnot, not too mention I use the app on my phone quite a bit as well. I don't post a whole lot, as I don't typically like to post just random stuff. It's immensely helpful for me because I follow a lot of people and websites that post web design tips and tutorials and stuff. I also tend to get a lot of my news from Twitter because stuff happens so quickly on there, due to trending topics.
I'll "check" regularly in the sense I've converted some of the people I follow to RSS feeds :P Going to twitter's just not a habit I've formed yet, so a dedicated program may be easier for me at this point as well as one for my phone.

I too get a good portion of my news from twitter. News on there moves so much faster than most sites.

I have it, but rarely use it. I follow some NFL players and a few other people. I never post on it though. Normal people don't really have tons of interesting things to say normally...

I follow maybe 7 people, and have roughly 6 following me. Would never know why though all I ever write is FIIIRRREEEE and am rarely active unless I'm looking at the Minecraft Devs pages.

I talked to Chris Avellone a few times about alpha protocl and FNV. Thats all it was used for, I have nothing interesting to say, and no one interesting to follow.
(Did follow Chris and J.E Sawyer, but havent used it in ages, because I dont care about their SP rpg).

Okay so let me start this off with stating that I don't have a twitter but I use facebook on a very limited basis. I use facebook to socialize with friends that I don't see to often in real life. I understand how twitter works and you follow people and I'm sort of interested in it I guess. Who here uses one and to what extent? Is it worth getting one to follow people? Who do you follow?

Nobody I know in real life uses a twitter account. I doubt I would ever post messages on it, I would just use it to follow people that interest me.

I use it to follow my favorite musicians, mostly. I'll post the stuff I write, too. St. Vincent has the best posts -

"Sometimes I wish I could tactfully, telepathically warn strangers not to marry their current boyfriends/girlfriend."

Twitter is abomination, I think people make the mistake of assuming other people actually care what they had for breakfast :P

I've seen only a handful of people post mundane things like this. Most share things they consider cool or talk about major recent events and it's incredibly easy to avoid the mundane people -- just don't follow them

I always fought it, and I'm not sure why now. I like it better than Facebook. I follow mostly sports figures. It's a great way to interact with writers involved with my teams, mostly the Texas Rangers, FC Dallas, and Liverpool. I follow a lot of baseball and soccer(football) pundits. I also have a few friends on there as well.

I use it mainly to follow fandom crap, some world news, and some hobby interests like history. I will sometimes hear about world events on Twitter first.

my cousin uses, she seems to like it.

i made an account, too, because the teacher said it was going to be part of our class that he'd show how to use it and stuff. because apparently, people follow other people to get the latest news before general public does. or something like that. i tried it once, kind of worked. i am following Ron Paul, and on his twitter page it was posted one morning that his son was held up by the airport security, or something like that. later in the day i googled it and read about it from some website that sighted his and his son's tweeter accounts. so i guess it works. not sure how soon after it made to the media, but that was enough testimony for me that this is indeed a good way to keep up with the buzz and stuff.

and i haven't actually been on there for some time now. weeks, maybe a months or so.

using it... simple and offers some customizing options, unlike Facebook. no nonsense, everything that's needed for such a site to function seems to be available and works. if you move there from Facebook, i don't think you'll have any problems getting used to it.

Quick question, why would someone follow me? I just made an account yesterday and some website is following me. "The Latest Video Game News & Reviews" is what they're about so because I'm following a bunch of video game people they follow me? I'm confused.

I think people do it so that you notice them and follow them back. I think there may be bot accounts as well.

You'll always get random people randomly follow you for all sorts of reasons. If you've made any hashtagged posts you'll get a few people genuinely find you. People will also follow you in hopes you'll follow them and then create a follow following thingy (there's actually a term for this on Twitter but it escapes me now. They're groups where if you follow someone all of a sudden a bunch of people will follow you -- but they only stay following you if you follow them back, unfollowing you after a day). I've had some 50-odd followers over my short time on twitter, most come and go.

Pssh... I won't be following them. Is there a way to remove them?

EDIT: Ahh, I see DEFRON, then I'll just let it be.

Just leave them alone and usually they go away soon enough. If you want you can also make your Twitter account private, so only approved people can follow you. I only follow people back if: 1. I know who they are or 2. they post interesting stuff.

@SI_PeterKing is a good follow if you are interested in the NFL, or really the American sports scene in general.

You can block someone, too. Or you could put your account on protected status, then people have to ask your permission to follow you. Spambots are a pain but I prefer to keep mine open because I actually have found interesting feeds from people following me. Like for instance, once I started following a sci-fi/ fantasy publisher, I got some other literary people following me. Probably they are on the publisher's list and look at who is following. Some I ignore, some I block if they truly are just spam, but a couple have been interesting feeds that I've ended up following.

My first few weeks I had a ton of very attractive women who only seemed to discuss various products start following my account, presumably in the hopes that I'd follow back. I'm not that gullible.

I have a Twitter that I've just recently started to use since Wasteland 2. I don't tweet much, but I do read to some extent.

I following a guy I work with who lives in Texas, Brian Fargo, Chris Avellone, BethBlog, PantslessLandsharks (I belong to that "club") and one other person. No one follows me though except the guy I work with; cause I'm not cool. Other than that I pretty much hate social media...

Although I do see JE Sawyer's tweets and I think he's crazy. Is he crazy? Because his tweets are..."Out-there".
