Using Twitter

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 4:18 pm

Okay so let me start this off with stating that I don't have a twitter but I use facebook on a very limited basis. I use facebook to socialize with friends that I don't see to often in real life. I understand how twitter works and you follow people and I'm sort of interested in it I guess. Who here uses one and to what extent? Is it worth getting one to follow people? Who do you follow?

Nobody I know in real life uses a twitter account. I doubt I would ever post messages on it, I would just use it to follow people that interest me.

Use it to follow people and post interesting stuff (generally tech/security related). I know a few people IRL who have it, but don't follow any of them since they just dribble mundane things about their life :P

I use a Twitter account with the intention of announcing updates to my various mods - unfortunately life and classwork have kept me from doing any modding, but I use my Twitter account for other stuff now as well.

I follow some close friends but mostly I use it too follow companies in the gaming industry and gaming outlets. For example Bethesda used Twitter yesterday to tease a screenshot of the new Dishonored trailer.I also follow my favorite athletes and sports teams and some musicians so I can stay up to date. So it's useful as a news source.

It's also a good place to put yourself out there if you are a budding writer or musician or really whatever.

Bottom line, I enjoy much more than facebook which, other than some of the dumb stuff people hashtag.

I have twitter, but mostly to discuss my world building. I follow a few other world builders, some science blogs, a bunch of Bethesda devs, and a smattering of random accounts like MovieBob (who does the weekly movie reviews on the Escapist).

I made an account to enter a contest, and never touched it since. I could use it to follow people, but that's what RSS and forums like these are for. It's much more entertaining to read through the butthurt about a game update than it is to just read the original tweet

I can understand its uses, and creating an account isn't all that difficult, so go for it.

I use one account to follow selective companies/ppl...altho I don't tend to actually read their posts very much, since I rarely login. Most "famous people" are as boring as me/everyone else, or don't tweet very often. Companies one is interested in fare better in that regard.

I use a 2nd twitter account specifically for baseball games. eg, real-time commenting/cheering of an ongoing game with other fans of the same team. Uses like that can be quite fun. Don't always feel like socializing while watching a game but if I do, it's a nice option.

So I'm checking available usernames and Schnakers was taken.

I wasn't going to use it anyways but still, that's strange to me.

Who would I follow for Bethesda news?

Some places have gotten into twitter, in my area we all got off Facebook and are now on twitter. I like it a lot and only use my Facebook for being "in a relationship" with my current girlfriend. Who doesn't respect video games which makes me quite sad

Twitter is a great for getting instant oatmeal news if you can follow the right sources. I created a Twitter account for following guys like Darren Dreger, Peter Schiff, Bob MacKenzie, certain bands, a few hockey teams, the latter of which so I know what events to attend at which venues, and so on.

I have a Facebook account and I went through a painstaking process of going back to an old account that didn't use their horrible Timeline interface (which I stupidly activated manually around Christmas time), which included removing/re-adding all friends/family, deleting all photos/videos and re-uploading them on the new account -- once they force that account to Timeline I'll be ditching Facebook for good, and will likely start using tweets for family/friends. In the end, there's always e-mail, phone, and actually seeing them, so may not either, will decide if/when that circumstance comes.

Yep. The only reason I use twitter is to follow people who I want to get instant updates from. Generally eSports related.

I use Twitter to keep in touch with friends and follow people/companies that I'm interested in. I like it a lot, and use it daily.

I'd post on it more if I remembered to. I forget I have it and only when I I have to allow a site through notscript do I remember i have it (because my browser twitter addon is right next to notscript).

Should probably look into some of the desktop clients and have it just run in the background all the time and put a client on my phone.

Is there one for Rage?

I'm humbly waiting for DLC to be announced.

If you start clicking on who others are following, or what lists they have, it's pretty incredible how quickly that can increase. I've hardly used it and despite being pretty choosy I already have 45 people I follow (although the seven LoadingReadyRun feeds aren't counted in my official tally).

I don't understand how some people can follow several hundred feeds and not break them down into lists, particularly with how prolific some feeds are.

A lot of lists are private, so you can't really tell how much a person is using them. :)
But yeah....many people have a "if they follow me I follow them" habit, where it's less about keeping track of (or even caring about) other people's feeds as it is about number popularity/politeness.

I think it's going to take a little bit before I get used to it. I can see myself forgetting about it after a week. I need to set my phone up or something.

I've gotten into a habit of checking/posting on it several times a day. I even have an app tab setup in Firefox so I can keep track of my timeline and whatnot, not too mention I use the app on my phone quite a bit as well. I don't post a whole lot, as I don't typically like to post just random stuff. It's immensely helpful for me because I follow a lot of people and websites that post web design tips and tutorials and stuff. I also tend to get a lot of my news from Twitter because stuff happens so quickly on there, due to trending topics.
