Valentine's Day gifts

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 2:15 pm

Greetings, all. That rather questionable holiday is coming up, and there's someone that I would like to get a little something for.

Now, my plan is to go for something... semi-romantic. Something that could have meaning, but something that I could down-play to be safe as well.
I was thinking about ordering her one of those fruit bouquets, but after looking around I found they're a tad expencive for 'semi-romantic', if we were involved I wouldn't give the price a second thought however. She's been working on loosing weight for a while, so I don't want to get her one of those heart-shaped boxes full of chocolate, even though I know that she'd like it (too common of a practise anyways).

Right now, I'm leaning towards getting her just a single long stem red rose. What do you think?
Also, feel free to share any stories (good or bad) about giving or receiving Valentine's Day gifts. I'm sure that there's some interesting stories out there. ;)

Just a btw, no JAHO comments, please. As this is my only friend (aside from a few people around here) and she's a tad younger than I am, I want to be far safer than sorry, but I'm still going to get her something.

[censored] that noise! Go balls to the wall and wine and dine her. Make reservations at a romantic spot, a dozen roses, the works man. Now is not the time to hold back, now is the time to go big!

What about geninely considering learning Japanese, so you can read their VNs ?

So, uh... Instead of buying her a fruit basket, why not buy the fruit sepertel, assuming you already have a basket, it should be cheaper.
How much was the fruit basket ?

Hand made Valentines Day card to make it say what I want it to say...not what Hallmark thinks I want to say....and a bouquet of 12 long stemmed red roses is my plan.

 Not a bad idea.
I like the link, never watched Big Bang Theory but when I was hanging out with her last week that show was mentioned.

That's a lot better than any 'in b4 jaho' posts that I was worried about seeing. At least you suggest a plan of attack.

I don't have a talent for cutting fruit into fancy shapes, so that's not really a good idea.
The fruit bouquets that I was looking at started at around $50 (US), a little more than I thought that they would be.

What is the label for you two? It doesn't sound like you're a couple yet so I'm just curious on the status before I suggest something.

Yea, I'd seen adverts for them on TV and thought that they looked interesting, but after seeing the prices they don't seem quite so interesting anymore.

 Friends?
I've known her for almost five years but over the last year we've spent a lot of time together. There are feelings between us (some people think that we're more involved than we actually are), but neither one of us has made any sort of move. There have been more than a few vague or suggestive things said, but neither one of us acted like it actually meant anything.
She isn't currently seriously involved with anyone, but I know that there's a lot of other guys after her (including two ex-boyfriends).

Where's the rolleyes smilie?

Valentine's day. Normally this is the time of year when I switch to my "hate! hate! hate!" avatar. Unfortunately, this will be the first year in many, many years where that would be hippocritical. As of three days ago, I have a girlfriend. I'm sure if I look long enough in the Bible I'll find that that's one of the signs of the coming appocolypse. Whatever the case, it's completely true. So to all my single brothers and sisters who will be celebrating the day after Valentines, forgive me. I will not be celebrating with you this year. But know that I have felt your pain and will do my best to keep any Valentines day celebrations private.

Oh, just wondering. I've personally never done anything for a friend on valentines day (or had a relationship last there haha) but I just don't think you should spend too much money on just a friend. If you do, make a move as well because it seems like a game of relationship chicken.

I always go with a package of pink and purple cotton panties, sometimes with some sort of princess/fairy avatar on them. Plus maybe some fishnets.

You would know better than we tbh. You have known her for 5 years. The only relatively sure way you are shocking her out of friendship mode is with something that comprehensively fits her. What are her likes? Hobbies? Etc. Get her something she will like and have cause to use,not something she will use too often but oon occasion. So that when she uses it, she thinks of you and does not use it so much she becomes too familiar with it and forgets whence it came. This may help your relationship branch out and become something intimate and then reaffirm it as it continues till she becomes comfortable with the idea of you romantically and not as a friend.

Things that can succeed or fail.
-drawing her a portrait(IF YOU HAVE SKILL!!!) This has failed on me before but that is because I am an idiot and forgot Valentines was around the corner and rushed out a portrait of the girl in 2-3 hours the night before Valentines day, still with her though her reception was kind of insulting. I thought I did well lol)
-Poetry requires skill and you to know her well enough to use subtle word imagery to make her interpret the words as specially designed for her. Present it as a, hey look what I made kind of thing. Not here I made this just for you as that overhypes it and makes them expect more.
-Special item you find of little significance for just about anyone else except her. Example-say she likes a band. Get her an item that embodies their name. (this is more of a longshot imo)

I AM talking out of my ass btw. I am no expert. Multiple gifts and being romantic and passionate help the most!

Just some thoughts. I am 21 years old so keep that in mind lol

Since you've known her for so long and have yet to actually put forth the initiative to make a move, I'd suggest doing absolutely nothing and go for six years and longer, maybe while cheering on some ex boyfriend to get back with her while you plan ways to send her subtle kiddy messages like a red rose.

No idea why some are so patient with this. If you want something, go get it, don't wait. Valentine's Day is two weeks away, more than enough time for some opportunist guy to make a move -- harsh reality check. If I had that type of interest in this person I'd have asked them out long ago. Valentine's Day is merely a day, a rose is merely a rose, going after the things you want is what sends the real message to someone.

Congrats..I think.

If you like her you get her a dozen roses and tell her how you feel. If she's been your friend for 5 years and she's your only friend I'm sure you like her right? If you're really not interested in making more of it get her a single rose and maybe take her out to dinner if she's that kind of girl. If you do like her and she likes what you say then it will be more than enough of a gift. I was once in a similar situation of having one real friend who happened to be a girl who I happened to like very much and one big leap later she's in asleep right now wearing my ring. I know you said to skip the JAHO comments but there's my miniature pep talk anyway. Good luck either way, I hope you're both happy with whatever you end up doing.

the grass is still green.
And you're the babe,

haha for fun.

The squint, in your eye,
makes my heart, soar so high.
I look upon, your face,
and thank gods, for mace.

It helps distract, from the pain,
when I anolyze you, in my brain.
I spray a little, to blur my sight,
the ugly trees touch, was not light.

With you it is a certainty, for sure,
I am thankful, all is obscure.
For complete contemplation would enact,
A series of assurances that your fat!

DONT USE THIS!!

I'd say go for something personal that suits her personality, and you'd know better than anyone here what that might be. It might not be a "traditional" Valentines gift but it would probably mean more to her. Either that or a nice memory, if not a keepsake - take her on a cool day out or something. My friend just took a date surfing at one of those wave machine things. He got the video of them both flopping about in the waves so they've got that to laugh over too. Good thing about that is it's not overly romantic so it won't be weird if you just stay friends.
