Vampires attacking town gates

You are basically saying DG and Skyrim are incompatible games.

No, they are not incompatible, you can go do the main game quests if you want, but having an extra war going on means you might have to change how you play, some do not seem to be able to handle having the extra random attacks. Those who cannot, should just avoid them.

I want to relate an experience I just had that shows a problem with the attacks.

I fast traveled to Dawnstar for a "Kill the hidden vampire" quest. First off a dragon spawns. No big deal, they have been known to take out some NPCs from time to time, but I can generally deal with that. The problem was that as I was looking up at the Dragon, a vampire attack was apparently happening on the other side of town. How did I know? Because I got a quest failed message (ring of pure mixtures). So I ran over to the apothocary and there were 3 vampires fighting a Betild and a guard. Plus the Dragon pounced on them. Amazingly, Betild survived but the guard died. (So much for "squishy vampires," they are only squishy compared to the pc, not to the NPCs.)

I was sorely tempted to just let it ride since I wanted the Dawnstar shield more than I cared about the failed quest, but in the end decided I would like to have the free alchemy training at some point. So I reloaded. This time I fast traveled to the Dawnstar sanctuary rather than Dawnstar. This did not help in preventing a vampire attack. They still spawned right in front of the Jarl's longhouse. So I had to race over there as fast as I could. Fortunately, this time instead of 3 vampires, it was one vampire and 2 death hounds, so everyone survived. Plus, the dragon was diverted westwards away from the town to attack a troll.

In both cases, the vampire attack spawns very far away from where you are when you approach Dawnstar. Unless you notice right away something is going on you are likely to lose someone. Even if you do notice, by the time you get there someone may be dead already.

It seems to me at the very least that the vampires should spawn close to the player so that he/she has the opportunity to do something.

Thanks for that info cap_and_gown, I had wondered where the vampires spawned in Dawnstar. I also started at the Dawnstar Sanctuary trying to avoid an attack, but got distracted by the new boat for a few seconds. By the time I realised my error the vampires had spread to both ends of town and my character Aussie was chasing them all over the place. No one was lost, but I never risked going there again while she was getting the attacks.

Yeah that's a bug. I finished the dg quest line and haven't had a single attack anywhere from the volkihar since. I was hoping 1.7 would have quite a few dg bug fixes. Probably pretty unrealistic for me to think that less than a month after it released

so...I played some more this weekend many, many, many hours after Dawnguard....and I still get attacked by hounds and vampire masters and thralls out in the open and around towns.
