Varmint rifle

Level 24 and still carrying the Varmit rifle. It is also nice with the silencer I noticed if you want to silently take out some one that pissed you off on the strip.

I have been using it because it's the only gun I have decent mods for ... but now that I'm reading about this Ratslayer, I want to go back to the cave where it's located. How did I search that thing three times and miss almost everything inside it? Bah.

I sold it pretty quickly, soon as I was able to get a regular supply of .357 Magnum. Then I sold the Cowboy Repeater when I had a regular supply of .44 Mag. Currently I'm still using the Trail Carbine because I can't find a regular supply of .45-70 Gov't for my Brush Gun.

If I need a more powerful rifle I have the AMR lurking.

The Ratslayer is a fully modded Varmint Rifle with better dps and a different skin, still using it when wandering outside on my hardcoe melee survivalist. Sneak attacks from afar keeps the damage I take to a minimum. I probably won't replace it till I get mods for the other rifles, its just a reliable little weapon.

I enjoyed mine when I had it fully modded, then I found the Ratslayer so I used it to repair the Garand.

I'm using it right now on my current character whos level 8. I got a night scope and extended mag but the traders in goodsprings, novac, or the gun runners didn't sell the silencers. I even checked mick and ralphs...

Vendor's stock is random, so keep checking back after letting the vendor lie fallow for 3+ game days.

Spoiler
According to the GECK, there are no hand-placed weapon mod kits. The varmint silencer is a "tier 1" weapon mod, so check both vendors at the 188, Cliff Briscoe, Angelo, Blake, Chet, Dale Barton and the various gun runners.

I still use my Varmint Rifle, It acts as a smaller weapon. I use it in stealthy ways since it has a silencer and extended mags.

I'm still using the Varmint Rifle, I only just got to Novac.

I've got the Service Rifle, but I don't feel it has good accuracy.. I can hit a target a lot better with my Varmint Rifle - I also added a silencer onto my Varmint Rifle. I just wish you could give your guns names... :(

I love the varmint rifle with night scope, extended mag, and silencer. I play with all settings maxed out and the further zoom out from character mod. I move forwards a bit while always keeping an eye out, see a single enemy way off in the distance or even a group, crouch, zoom -=phut=- "HEADSHOT', -=phut=- "HEADSHOT", rinse cycle repeat. Haven't found ratslayer yet but we'll see. In my first playthrough when all I wanted to do is "beat" the game that was my primary long range weapon from start to finish.

Was using them until I bought a Cowboy Rifle, even though is uses different ammo it does so much more damage. I do like to keep on as a reserve because I have so much more ammo for it... I just got a Service rifle but I have not had a chance to use it yet..

I use mine in preference to the Cowboy Repeater, because the iron sights on the CR are difficult to use unless your enemy is standing perfectly still. The VR is much better (when using iron sights) for keep track of multiple targets and engaging them as they move around.

The Service Rifle sights were even worse then the CR's sights - it quickly got sold off for caps and I went back to the VR. Can't kill what I can't aim at.

I'm with Boone, and I used the Varmint rifle for a long time, since I got the Sniper Rifle I attached a Night Vision Scope to the Varmint and gave it to him.. I'm working on getting 2 Varmints for Boone (Day Scope/Night Scope/Silence/Mags).. I however am content on upgrading my Sniper Rifle..

I have a service rifle, and a cowboy repeater, but I still use the Varmint rifle because I got it decked out with mods. Night scope, extended clip, and silencer. I can snipe people from far away without causing a huge fuss, whereas a single shot from my other rifles alert the whole area to my presence. Now when I find some good mods for the other rifles, I'll probably make the switch.

Cowboy Repeater is very easy to get early on in the game and beats the Varmint Rifle by far.

see: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout:_New_Vegas_weapons

Next better and very easy and early to get rifle would be the Trail Carbine (though .44 ammo might not be too easy to find early).

Once you get access to Gun Runners store and can create Weapon Repair Kits I think the strongest upgrades would be the Brush Gun and if you prefer a Silenced Weapon the Silencer for the Sniper Rifle. (Sniper Rifle should not only be the highest DPS/DPAP weapon in the game, you also can get 100% Crit Chance because of the x5 Crit Modifier) making it excellent if you have the "better criticals" Perk.

I've stuck the night vision scope and silencer on mine and it's standing in for a sniper rifle until I come across one.
