PC Version Depth of Field?

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 1:32 am

I am a big fan of depth of field. However, except for Gothic 3 and a few others, I have rarely seen depth of field used for PC RPG games, and it seems high end console games have it more often.

In the gameplay videos for the 360 I can clearly see some awesome depth of field. Does anyone know if Skyrim has it for the PC?

If by this you mean viewing and drawing distance, it should be the same if not better on PC than on consoles, depending on your kit. But any current midrange PC should outdo a console on this.

I am talking about the blur for far away objects.

I like it when far away mountains and trees are slightly blurred. It gives a 3d effects because things closer are in focus.

DoF is very likely to NOT be in the game, but you can bet it will be eventually modded in.

No idea about depth of field, but on a similar line, I really really hope FOV is changable.

Dead Island gave me awful... what can only be described as "motion sickness"... really, really badly - until somebody released a tool to change the FOV from the disgustingly low default (was it 65 degree or something?) to something more reasonable (after which it was absolutely fine!).

When you have a large monitor, and you are sitting close to it, a low FOV can trigger motion sickness (if you're susceptible to getting travel sick) - because your eyes are seeing a "big wide open area" in front of you (the monitor's physical area), but your brain is getting "Limited field of vision" - and when the brain disagrees with what the eyes see, it assumes you have toxins/poison in you, and tries to make you ill to "get rid of it" or stop whatever you were taking. Very unpleasant.

It has been said MANY times that pc quality can NOT be lower than the xbox. Meaning that low on pc = xbox.

Does lowest possible settings on Oblivion look the same as consoles...nope. Todd Howard already said The console and PC version look about the same. Well if you sit back from the TV a bit .

Skyrim has FoV for the PC, like OB, FO3, ... It can be tweaked by console command or in file Skyrim_default.ini

The default value in OB and FO3 is 75.

I know both Fallout 3 and Fallout NV had it, I would be pretty surprised if Skyrim did not.

If it does I hope they do it like The Witcher 2, That game had beautiful depth of field.

OK then there will be a mod for it, if it's not there by default. Something like this:

One way or another it will exist

DOF is fine as long as I get the option to turn it off.
Just Cause 2 really made me sick after 30 minutes of gameplay, fortunately it was only a demo.
No blurry cam for me, thanks.

LOD mods, ones that give sharper textures farther out and mods that remove the fog from distant areas are very popular. I even use them. However, when I can see the edge of the map, it is kind of jarring so that I prefer the foggy blurry distance overall. So, for those who can't mod it in, you may not be missing much in the experience. For those of you who can mod it in, you may or may not like it.

That was one of my favorite mods for FONV. Also the Crysis 2 DoF mod for Oblivion and God rays. Tweak that blur motion one a little bit, it reminds me of ARMAII.
