Voice Acting for All Characters But YOU?

God no. Wasting resources and time on voicing the main character? No.

Just no.

In all seriousness, talk to the screen when you play. It is intended that you be your own character's voice; that's the point of a silent protagonist. It allows you to be more immersed in what's going on. You character responds just like you would. You should talk.

That would take out a lot of the immersion factor since if we dont like the way our character sounds we have no choice but to weep mournful tears. (which the trolls will use as fuel for years!)

The main character having a voice can work well in some games, like say Dragon Age where you have a selection of voices to pick from, that can suit a character class better.

But as we learnt, or those anyway, that played Two Worlds 2 for example, if there is just one voice & it's not that great, it ruins the immersion when your Mage sounds like JC Denton

If they offerd various voices like Dragon Age, i can see it being a more viable option. But i suspect the amount of dialouge involved maybe costly to impliment, and i wouldnt want them cutting the dialogue down just so the MC has a voice.

Downside to that is that we'd only be able to play the default nord (in case of Skyrim) :lmao:

If they were to ever do that, I'd need the option to turn it off. It would destroy my idea of my character and I'd find it very limiting. Sorry OP...it wouldn't be something I'd support.

I like the fact that I can decide exactly what my character sounds like in my mind, it adds something to the experience.
It would kind of be like getting a voice actor for Gordon Freeman (I know it's radical and extreme to compare it to voicing GF).

voice acting makes the character more seperate from you.
Look at Mass effect - you don't play your own guy, your own character, who you can imagine. You play Shepard. Sure, you can choose the backstory and the dialogue options, but you still end up being either SuperNiceGuy Shepard, PerfectlyBlandandNeutral Shepard, or ViolentAngryPunchintheFace Shepard.

Do you actually select whole sentences out of the options as in Fallout game? I never like walking up to NPCs and saying "Grey Fox" or "Amulet".

lol gothic games. Tried them all, hated them all. Love open world rpgs, but gothic is a [censored] joke of a series.

Mr. Burke should voice the Male human type races. Who would argue that?

<3 Wes Johnson

PS: He also did Sheogorath and Lucien LaChance which is more than enough for a resume to do the voice for the player!

On a side note, that would nearly double the amount of recorded dialogue, as your character would have to respond to most of what is said to him. I don't mind playing a game that requires 2 discs, but I don't see how that would work in an open world RPG such as Skyrim.

Only the PS3 could keep it on a single disc. (Not trying to start a console war; I own a PS3, but I prefer to game on my 360 unless it's a PS3 exclusive.)

Besides, few have done it right but Mass Effect. It's weird choosing dialogue options that are written out completely, only to hear the words you just read repeated, such as was done in Deus Ex: Human Revolution. And while both Skyrim and ME are RPG's, they're different types. In Skyrim you are whatever role you choose to be, in ME you are Shepard, and while you can customize what he does, his gender, and many of his actions, the bottom line is, you are NOT someone else. It makes sense that Shepard has a voice, but my Skyrim character is whomever I want him to be, how does Bethesda know if he speaks in an accent? Or maybe it's a woman that speaks with a lower pitch? What if he has a dry rasp?

I think Bethesda thought of this and said, wisely, "we don't."

Edit: While I was still typing away at this a bunch of people said basically what I did about Mass Effect. Sorry for the repeat!
