Well Rested

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 2:07 am

Yeah its another RPG element removed in favour of action gaming.
I dont like it very much.

There are some people that still need the Computer to do everything for them.

As Bethesda discover new ways of giving you even more and more rope it's inevitable some people will get tangled and it's unfortunate that it could actually strangle your gaming experience.

You could play the game in a manner that lets you get from fight to fight as quickly as possible.

Or you could sleep when it's late and even sit your character down for 3 solid meals each day as you play.

It's entirely up to you and that's part of the beauty of Bethesda's game.

Well Rested bonus is not really an incentive to me. Just like it wasn't in Fallout 3, it isn't here either. Giving me a bonus is not an incentive.

Leveling up was more of an incentive.

Leveling up wasn't an incentive, it was required. Well rested bonus IS an incentive, players can choose to ignore it but it's up to them. It isn't roleplaying if you are being forced to do something. Sleeping is still in the game and provides a bonus. If roleplaying is very important to the player they can take advantage of it. Are you mad that everyone else who is playing isn't being forced to sleep? I guess I am just not sure what the problem is here. All of the tools are here for roleplaying, it is up to the player if they want to use them or not, as it should be.

Thanks for your help guys.

Just to clarify what you mean by "lets all your skills increase 10% faster" - I presume you mean skills like one-handed weapons, lock picking, destruction magic etc etc...?

I wish there was also a penalty for not sleeping regularly like lower magica/stamina after being awake for over two days. It would make sense that we would be tired right?

The need to rest has been removed.
Therefore, RPG element removed in favour of action gaming.

This is not up for debate.
The whole game is designed so you can just go from fight to fight.

There was never a need to *rest* there was a need to "pause for 1 hour to level up". That is not the same thing.
If it was to be an RPG element for resting it would have to be something like:
After 12 hours stamina starts to reduce so that after 18 hours only 25% remaining until you sleep for 7 hours. If you only sleep for 3 you get a bit back but until you sleep for 7 it never gets back to 100%.

There has never been anything like that so no RPG element has been lost in relation to rest, there never was one. As you are fond of saying "This is not up for debate".

They have however removed a tedious and silly mechanic for levelling up.

Seriously? you had to sleep in oblivion ?(Skyrim is my first elder scrolls game)

Wow, how boring. I want to have fun playing a game, not a reallife simulator. Glad they changed that.

The buff is from 6 hours of continuous sleep, and frankly i find the buff a much more compelling reason to sleep than morrowind or oblivions requirement of it to level.

This complaint, this thread... people are dumb.

I'm actually the opposite in Skyrim. In Oblivion I only used to sleep in beds to level up, so sometimes I would go a few in-game weeks without resting. In Skyrim, because of the bonus I tend to rest in beds more, also because the nights seem a lot darker and it's easy to get jumped by a strong creature (or accidentally walk into a giant camp...), I tend to rest at inns overnight and leave for quests/journeys in the morning.

The point of this thread was not to complain. It was a discussion thread. But it appears some people on this site don't seem understand the difference any more....people are dumb.

The 6 hours thing was pretty helpful, considering many people were discussing its exact time. And yeah... you just sound like a bit of a male donkey to be honest. Giving a bonus is most definitely an incentive. Forcing someone to do something to experience a lot of the game is not.

Your opinion on the matter is totally up for discussion, but you're just not letting people discuss. Go to the older game forums if you love them so much.

That is a fallacy. The need to sleep was only there for levelling up, could be for an hour, and you could postpone it for days, weeks or months at a time if you did the smart thing and put your most used skills as non-essential. It has nothing to do with being an RPG; if that were ever intended to be the case, your stamina or strength would decrease the longer you went without sleep.

Calm down kids, it doesn't matter.

Some of you like to RP and pretend you're actually sleeping at night

Some of us like to explore day and night and not bother pretending a computer game character actually has to rest. If you're that into RPing, go play LARP in the forest offline. If it was realistic there'd be no saving, and no respawning. It's poetic license, doesn't matter.

I love the fact that I can just play constantly, it doesn't matter.

Simply untrue.
Play Daggerfall and Morrowind.

Nope. I tend to RP with my characters so I'll sleep/eat etc at the appropriate times and places. I slept even when I didn't need to level in Oblivion. If you have a sliver of imagination you shouldn't really need a game mechanic to force you to roleplay.

I RP sleeping, not eating though thats too much of a hassle. Actually I sleep alot more in skyrim then Oblivion.
