Werewolf Form: Worthless at high levels?

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 9:16 pm

Ok, so a little background.

My character was level 36, wearing full dragonplate armor, with the mace of molag bal. Yeah, I was lazy, I waited forever to do the werewolf quest, but I finally did it.

So I went through the quest and I became a werewolf, and at first I'm all like WOOOO this is great! But then someone hits me and suddenly my health is cut in half. Then they hit me again and I'm dead.

Now as a shield-bashing face-smashing heavily armored monster machine, this troubles me greatly, because these are the same people who only five minutes ago I was one-shotting with Molag Bal's blessing, and yet now in this Strong, Fast, Powerful werewolf form everyone was hyped about, I'm getting two-shotted by them, and actually have to hit them several times to kill them.

In short, transforming into a werewolf turned out to be a very bad move! So now I'm a werewolf, I can never, ever again benefit from rest unless I go through the quest to undo it, and I have a beast form that is completely and utterly useless to me.

So what's the deal here, does Werewolf form just not scale at higher levels, or what? I was damned excited about this form, but now...

And then there's the lack of utility! You cant access your menu, cant look at your map, cant open locked doors/objects, cant loot anything, meaning that after your little kitten-scratching rampage you have to T+wait for the form to wear off, then go back and grab everything you missed.

Now combine that lack of utility with just how incredibly WEAK this form is, and you'll quickly stop hitting that ability. In fact, I took it right off my favorites list, and never intend to use it again. It's useless to me, completely and utterly without value. My character is TEN TIMES STRONGER without werewolf form!

This is one of the biggest disappointments in an otherwise truly fantastic game.

Edit: Final Point.

Ok, you can only use it once per day, it makes all non-werewolf npcs hostile to you, you cant use your map, cant unlock doors, cant loot objects, cant use spells or shouts, and your howl is apparently completely ineffective on targets higher than level 25.

With all these limitations and downsides, shouldnt it be just a LITTLE overpowered?! You'd think that all these crippling side effects were supposed to counter-weigh some incredible benefit, but when you look on the other side of the scale, it's sadly barren. Ooooh, I have claws, I'm gonna scratch you! Oh no, you have arrows, guess I'm gonna die instead! Reload last save, dont click Beast Mode this time, try again.

Werewolf Claws level with you if I am not mistaken. But it always seems I am more powerful if I was wearing good armor and wielding a good weapon before transformation.

To be honest, It is amazing in combat, But I mainly use it as a free summon able horse if you will. Certainly easier to control.

Yeah, it gets quite weak for the higher levels - but it is awesome at early levels...

And with a slight change in tactics you can still be pretty powerful with the pounce attack and knocking power attacks.

Interesting point.
Would you say then become a Werewolf earlier and build with it rather than chose to become one at a later date?

This, I played werewolf at level 20, so I couldn't say for the 30's, but the best thing to do it use both hand buttons to auto knockback attack and claw until their dead, if you run into a mob use the howl (shout button) to fear them

The Werewolves effectiveness is based on your Light-Armor rating and One-Handed rating. So if your skill level in those increase, so does your Werewolf. Also, the Werewolf can gain new abilities like detecting enemies at night and summoning two red, ghost wolves to fight for you.

So the Werewolf is still very effective even at high levels. In fact, I've cleared out entire crowds of people at lvl 38 into the game.

It still has its uses. Its much faster than a horse and owns just about any beasts you encounter in the wilds regardless of the level and lets not forget our 100% immunity to illness.

Its not worthless but if werewolves could take as much damage as they dish out they would be impossibly overpowered.

that bit about looting/menus/opening locks was just dumb imo, werewolves need a draw back to make up for other abilities (i think speed makes up for endurace)

Werewolf reportedly keys off of One Handed and Light Armor for attack/defenses. I had no problems fighting a Silver Hand boss w/his minion on Master as a Werewolf by making liberal use of the knockdown attack. I only got into trouble when I didn't dodge a power attack.

Btw, Werewolves are incredibly weak to Silver and Daedric weapons. That's probably why you die so fast sometimes.

As a Werewolf, I'm able to send Giants flying back 50 ft with two power claw swipes, then while they're down I claw them to death. I've also killed Dragons as a Werewolf.

There's 3 Totems you can unlock for the Werewolf, two were already mentioned, the other being Health Regeneration.

Also, if you obtain the Ring of Hircine, you can transform into a Werewolf multiple times in one day.

I would say become one earlier if you want to experience being very powerful with them - except I did not know they were based off light armour and 1 handed (which explains why mine hits hard, but doesn't take much damage).

But as I said, with a slight change in strategy you can still own a whole dungeon as a werewolf (even when they all use silver weapons)...

The Skyforge smith should stock werewolf-equippable armor and maybe some steel claw gauntlets. Can't wait for mods.

That would make no sense. They wouldn't fit until you'd turned, and once you turn you have no way of putting them on.

If anything, Hircine should give you a buff for completing hunting-based tasks for him.

Apparently (I havent tried this yet), any armour increasing spell you cast before shifting is still in effect as a werewolf...

My werewolf got eaten by a mountain lion! I was busy viciously chasing down a terrified bunny when all of a sudden this mounatin lion pops out of nowhere and one shots me. It was shocking and sad. Once it was finished with me I saw it turn on the bunny. I doubt the bunny escaped.

Ditto. But I have some fun wrecking havoc with it as well. It is a bit squishy though.

Thats pretty sad. I hope the lion survived its encounter with the killer bunny.

Your loss.. it's actually quite fun.

I never intended to be a werewolf with my main character before playing the game, but as it's tied to the companion quests I went with it... (I may cure myself at some stage)

Fun yes but not very practical. It quickly becomes a downgrade button as you get better equipment, spells, enchantments, etc, etc.

If you're talking about being locked out of the inventory menu, I'm sure that'll be fixed by mods well before anybody makes werewolf armor. In fact I'm pretty sure I remember the console command to do it without mods, most likely "enableplayercontrols 0 1 0 0 0 0" or something to that effect. If you're talking about werewolves lacking the proper appendages to dress themselves, keep in mind this is a fantasy game with magic and enchantments. It could be bound armor, or regular armor that's able to morph along with you when you change (where does your regular armor go when you transform, anyway?)

Has anybody tested this? (just curious)
