What Happened to this Forum?

Post » Tue Jul 24, 2012 10:22 pm

Well, I used to be a member here around 6 years ago. Since then, I've moved to other countries, worked different jobs, ect. It's been only in the last month that I've finally returned, but it's so different now. The UI is much nicer than it was back then, but I remember it used to be simply the Elder Scrolls Forums lol. Now, they have about 10 different ones.

In any case, that's not what I wish to talk about. I remember quite vividly the amount of serious, intellectual discussions that we use to partake in. Politics and religion were off-limits then, but we still talked about all kinds of things. I remember discussions ranging anywhere from the misanthropic "humans are a disease" to discussions on morality such as "animal vivisection" to even discussions on evolution and astronomy.

I was hoping to see some of these here, but lo and behold, I've seen none whatsoever since I've joined. None at all. I've waited to see if things would turn around, and still I barely see anything of the sort lol.

I don't know anyone here, certainly don't see anyone from back in those days, just want to know what happened. The forum seems fairly amiable as it did back then, but the discussions are quite different than they use to be.

Things change

it's a much larger forum than it was 6 years ago, you can't expect it to stay the same.

lol, I'm not expecting it to be the same as 6 years ago. I'm talking about my perceived lack of intellectual discussions here.

As you said this isn't just an Elder Scrolls community anymore. There's people here who came for/from Fallout, RAGE, and other games. Skyrim has also attracted a large variety of different people.

Over the last weeks CD seems to have become a bit more spammy than usual though, it could just be that people are bored during the summer holiday.

Can we call this the JAHO generation, or were there many girl advice threads 6 years ago too? :P

I think so too. Hopefully, we'll see some.

Perhaps that is a factor as well. As far as the relationship threads...there were some. I haven't looked at the ones here, but back then we would poke a little fun at the poster and thread.

I suppose things have been a bit spammy lately like povu said, but we do still have some threads like that. It has been a while since I've seen one though, I think the last time I saw a proper thread like that was when I created one about http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1334682-is-education-useless-in-our-society, and that was in January :P

OP, there isn't many places you can have discussions about the kinds you've mentioned, but then again it makes sense. This entire place is rigged to blow. All it needs is a stray bullet to bring the whole structure down.

Although you could always head to the Skyrim area and get into a Stormcloak V Empire debate. I came here in late 2010 so I unfortunately don't know what this place was like.

I'm another one who originally joined six years back and I too miss the quality of topics from that time. Particularly things like the nose drinking topic, we simply don't see their like any longer. Sad. :hehe:

I wasn't here six years ago, but I'm inclined to guess that it's rose-tinted glasses. You remember the good threads (and maybe a few memorably bad ones), forget the mediocre ones. Remember Casablanca and Annie Hall (and Freddy Got Fingered), forget Exploitation Film #3872, Slapstick Turd #8263 and Generic Romantic Comedy #5934. If I left today and came back in 2018, I'd remember those threads with insightful essay-length posts from Longknife and Tycho, but will have probably forgotten about random threads about "LEGION WEAR SKIRTZ LOL" and "pls patch to allow post Hoover-Dam gameplay".

No, not really. I'm not saying things are better or worse now. Back then, we had our share of bad/weird threads too, but the difference is that I haven't seen too many of the topics I listed above at all.

Average gamer is 30 ish. No longer has the time to talk, so thus quality of discussion lowers for advlts at least. Teenagers, kids, and many younger advlts now remain to do a lot of the talking. I've noticed these patterns. Just wait.... another few years and another generation will start just hitting the 30 age mark and discussion should go up in terms of variety. By then a lot of the younger teenagers will also mostly be getting older as well. Then it will repeat as it happens all over again. Or at least this is what I think.

Edit
Could be wrong, but who knows. Would have to do a forum survey or something. Doubt anyone has enough time for something so long and complicated when they are desperate to make another jaho thread.

Edit2
Not posting as much anymore.

Edit3
Forum has long since lost its small dedicated community who were a little more thoughtful and willing to share on deeper subjects. Reminds me of larger forums, shank or be shanked. Internal politics is up though, that's always a good thing isn't it? lol

If I'm not mistaken it's not exactly an inside joke. "JAHO" stands for Just Ask Her Out; which more likely than not is a suitable reply to any particular but arbitrarily chosen topic.

And for the record, back when I joined in twenty-diggity, things weren't all too different. Sure the volume was slower, but that was friggin nine years ago. I thought "Gonads and Strife" was the funniest thing to ever grace gods green earth and Linkin Park was cool. So my judgement may not be worth all that much.

Edit: You are right, Gamgee. We have lost some good ones. But there's such a volume of new members that there's plenty of others to contribute unique and interesting viewpoints, the only difference is I don't have a rapport with them so I may not pay them as much heed as they deserve.

And you're doubly right about the forum demographics. While the average gamer is older, they're certainly a sort of "silent majority." I'm nowhere near 30 yet, but have my social habits (including those in cyberspace) changed since I was in highschool? Certainly. Of my 8000+ posts here, it'd be no hyperbole to say that at least 90% of them were made between my join date and 2008, when I was in high school. Nowadays, my social time is monopolized by meatspace interactions and Facebook. I'd say this is probably typical of most gamers, or at least those who also frequent forums. I simply don't have the time to be trolling these forums for hours and making dozens of posts per day as I once did.

Oh there's still smart people, but the problem is they're so hidden. No longer are there interesting threads to lure them out of the masses of the forum. I say we plant some books in a trap and see if we can capture any. Or a cross forum transplant, take smart ones from other forums and coax them over here somehow.

I know what you mean OP, and even though I joined around this time 2 years ago, I kind of ask the same thing.

What lured me here was Oblivion, after getting the GOTY edition (I was late to the party for anything related to Bethesda). I still remember the TES forums, they looked like CD and had a cool banner. Oblivion was the most crowded forum of course, being the most recent TES game, and the worst thread you could find was "Were is tes 5?". Don't get me wrong, there was still a share of bad threads, just not as bad as now.

I also tried out FO3 and New Vegas, which lured me to the Fallout forums which were rather cool and CD...well I am sure you can guess what lured me here :teehee:

Now, Skyrim...that is a whole different ballpark. When it was announced, I actually came out of my silent layman self and started talking alot in the Skyrim forums. There were regulars too. And threads that were always news worthy and something to talk about. Heck, we even have our own memories (Hot springs monkey hoax, anyone?) Then after E3, the regulars started to avoid the forums, but I kind of stayed because I was such a dedicated TES fan. So many threads that I am not gonna list off what dumb topics they were or what topic was asked/told over and over. (I swear, if I see someone asking about co-op again in Skyrim, it is gonna get like DEFRON's avatar in here!).

I remember your name popping up quite frequently prior to Skyrim's release. I don't frequent the Skyrim boards as much as I used to, I think I've mostly moved on to the CD.

I wonder what the forums were like back in the late 90s? I wonder what kind of dumb topics were circulating?
