What music do you listen to while playing Skyrim?

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 10:31 pm

Yea, cuz it doesn't happen if I don't wear 'em,...most of the time. / when I'm gaming, i'm actually lying or sitting in bed.

Fixed that for ya.

Seriously though. I tried several sets of headphones, and eventually just went to the little iPhone things. After a few hrs of gameplay, The damn headphones felt like they weighed 20 lbs.

In game music, nothing else really fits Skyrim, but I definitely see the allure of turning it off. Frankly though, I've never had an issue with the battle music giving away an enemy. It seems like it's scripted to play only if you have an enemy that is aggressive to you in your field of view. I guess the one exception may be Dragons, but they aren't exactly subtle, I can usually hear their distinct "Long range" echo a few minutes before they come within full LOD range. (The point when they change from low-texture dragon "Slug", to whatever they're supposed to be)
With the music off you can actually have dragons completely sneak up on you. Or the first thing you feel is the buffeting wind as they pass by - much better than the soundtrack tipping them off.

For typical enemies the music can definitely start before they become aggressive, bug maybe idk.

But just as bad as signaling the start of a fight the music also will toll its end. In a dungeon battling 2 draugr, then another comes up. Finally you emerge victorious - wait - are there more? with the music on you know already. ofc if you get a kill cam that is also a tension killer

I love the soundtrack in game. And I like the battle music. For me, it does what they intended it to do, and that is heighten the mood. I do turn the music way down so it doesn't override the dialogue and ambient sounds. It took a few tries to get the music volume just right for me, but now it is perfect.

I did check out the links in the first post. Good stuff. :)

If you're high enough level, Battle music stops playing period, probably because of how the game calculates threats. (IE, Skeevers don't trigger combat music at any time)

This includes ancient dragons. I got to say, when I reached that point on my first character, I think Skyrim lost an entire dimension of the experience. Games are combinations of Visual-Audio-Interactivity, and not having the music crippled the audio experience for me in Skyrim. I'll never play without it.

The day of release, I turned the music off, and have not changed it.

You should find a way to listen to a copy of the soundtrack, even if it's outside the game. It's really wonderful music, and it's somewhat depressing to think that there are people out there who haven't heard it.

(just ripping the tracks isn't the best option - in order to have the music blend together more this time, there seem to be a large number of mini sound files that can be mixed-and-matched. Good for the game, but less interesting to just listen to. :D And yes, I know this because - just like with the previous games - I tried to pull out the files so that i could also listen to them when I'm not playing.)

This.

Along with, mods that make it totally dark in dungeons, and on cloudy evenings. You actually are forced to use a torch. Even with the Magelite, I like the effect of the torch better. The sounds of the game, not the music, really puts you in there. THEN when you are taken by surprise, in the dark...It is absolutely intense.

Even just walking through the woods, in the broad daylight, you are jumping out of you skin, when a Dragon blasts your ass from out of nowhere! Add in the darkness, Deadly Dragons, PISE and playing DID, you are in for quite the experience. All with no music,,,

I her ya K2. I will, one day, maybe even today. I don't listen to much anymore, other than Bach, Mozart or Vivaldi.

the game music, because I cannot mod them out yet :I

also, I don't get the "cheating combat music" thing as it doesn't play until you are openly in combat. Even the dragon music kicks in after you hear their roar.

I don't get what the "modding music out" is all about. Just turn the music off in the in-game settings.

I think just "Turning off" Music might remove the ambient loop that plays under the music. (It's like a 48minute track of various atmospheric sounds)

I turned it all the way down and I don't recall, (no surprise there) ever hearing anything, but bugs, bees, birds and "You picked the wrong time to get lost friend!"

That's why I don't understand what this mod is supposed to do that the game already doesn't.

I think it's specifically the sound of the wind maybe, since things like Bugs, Bees and water is all contextual, but it stands to reason that wind is more-or-less always blowing.

That's the only thing I can think of, I'm not entirely sure of that either.

It's been a while since I've started a thread and I'm sure this has been asked before, but what do you like to listen to while playing Skyrim? Do you settle for the game music or do you play your own favorite tunes? Do you hum or whistle along or something similar? I prefer folk metal since it captures the wild and ancient spirit of Skyrim. I like to wary between situations as well.

My typical tavern music (better than the bards trust me); http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7kJRGPgvRQ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZApa3DFLVQ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JzHsx7MBUk&feature=related

Wandering the Reach (when I play this, Forsworn don't attack ); http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNQMRwOJw1w and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpPMmhmmMdk&feature=related and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbyTcNn0-lM

Hymns of Sovngarde; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaqqsTVuCnI and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5KheI9u510 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRXAih1vOY8

The beautiful landscapes of Skyrim; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwtKbRvskYY&feature=related and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXZreA1j_Oc and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKRefPsPhJE

So what do you guys prefer to listen to while fighting glorious battles?

Thanks for sharing. This is a style of music to which I was previously unaccustomed. But I kind of like it. Unfortunately, my turntable is connected to the same receiver as the PS3 so I cannot listen to other music while I am playing Skyrim. Usually I jsut listen to the Skyrim soundtrack but I turn it way down so I can hear what is going on in the game better. I play with no HUD and that means I need to pay close attention to sights and sounds (with surround sound) to figure out where enemies are, whether they know I'm there, and whether guards are watchign when I am trying to pickpocket someone.

I think modded versions turn on for certain situations, but automatically turn off for others. I think there's a guy here who says it'll turn the music off if he's out in the wilderness, but it comes back on in towns.

I meant that I cannot add my own next to the already existing ones.

Also the CK gives a lot of new ways to use music, but I cannot really use it if I can't import my own songs...

Usually folk metal, doom metal or black metal. Bands like Wolves in the Throne Room, Isis, Agalloch and Moonsorrow.

Pop music just doesn't go with Skyrim at all. Totally ruins the atmosphere.

I don't think I would be able to pay attention enough to either one. But then, I have a case of Brain Rot so that could have something to do with it. :)

I usually listen to the in-game music when playing.

It's usually only when playing a mmorpg or offline game with xp grinding that I'll put a cd or my iPod in the stereo. I prefer hearing the npcs, sfx, dungeon music and etc., while playing the game, as listening to outside music takes me out of the game, and can be distracting at times.

Hahahaha I just imagined this. What a funny scenario it would be to have these guys just totally chill, playing their instruments while your [censored]ting blood trying to fend off draugur.
