What music do you listen to while playing Skyrim?

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 6:26 pm

I play the game using the PS3 headphones and I listen to the in-game music. When the battle music starts or a wolf attacks suddenly I just about jump out of my socks!

In game music, nothing else really fits Skyrim, but I definitely see the allure of turning it off. Frankly though, I've never had an issue with the battle music giving away an enemy. It seems like it's scripted to play only if you have an enemy that is aggressive to you in your field of view. I guess the one exception may be Dragons, but they aren't exactly subtle, I can usually hear their distinct "Long range" echo a few minutes before they come within full LOD range. (The point when they change from low-texture dragon "Slug", to whatever they're supposed to be)
That's pretty much me. Metal suits TES about as well as hip hop. I prefer subtlety in game soundtracks. I think I'm going to try it without the music for a bit.

Hahahaha I just imagined this. What a funny scenario it would be to have these guys just totally chill, playing their instruments while your [censored]ting blood trying to fend off draugur.

That's what i was Imagining lol

I have the game music turned off and I listen to my iTunes.

Rolling Stones, the Misfits, the Animals, the D.O.C, Wu-Tang, Calabrese, etc.

The game's music is enough for me. However, I instantly think of "post-rock" and "ambient" type bands when I play Skyrim or watch an epic like Lord of the Rings.
Here are the bands I would put on my hypothetical Skyrim soundtrack:

1. Explosions in the Sky
2. Sigur Ros
3. Godspeed You! Black Emperor
4. Mogwai
5. Mono

I would also thrown in some downtempo electronic music such as Four Tet and Bonobo.

The in-game music.

With video games, the only time I listen to outside music is when I'm doing some MMO-style long-term repetitive type stuff. (Farming items/gold/whatever in an MMO, leveling a character on random battles in a JRPG, playing a long tower defense game....)

This is the same with me. I haven't played an MMO for a very long time though.

I am thinking about turning the music off now as I think it will add a slight extra challenge and I'm also finding that the music is becoming a little repetitve.

The game music. I find no music better to listen to than the game's default music - its beautiful, truly amazing music. It moves me more than Vivaldi or anyone else ever did.
I do, however, sometimes have the soundtrack from The Sims (aka the Sims 1) playing on YouTube. That's also very beautiful music.
And occasionally I put on a bit of Titanium by Sia and David Guetta, because it's a good song :)

This is bizarre, though - I can't imagine the Latin radio station playing during a fight ;)

I meant the more 'serious' build and buy mode songs! Although it's pretty rare for me to do this.

I'm listening to the vanilla music too since for some reason Bethesda decided that gamers should not be able to add their own music :( Well, at least the soundtrack is better than Oblivion's. Hopefully some witty fella will be able to create a 3rd party tool to add music to the game.
EDIT: Nevermind, I found this godsend: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=13286#content

Usually the default game music, but I just got Asylum by disturbed so I've been listening to it while traveling/dungeon crawling. Sometimes I listen to Slipknot, or Dethklok though. Really what ever I'm in the mood for.

The in-game music. I don't see a reason to listen to something else when the default music is already pretty immersive.

it doesn't play until you are openly in combat
Battle music begins the instant any actor currently in the same cell as the player toggles into combat mode. This can happen before the player even knows there is an enemy nearby (think Cliffracers in Morrowind). Worse yet, it doesn't even have to be combat with the player. If two animals fight each other somewhere in the same cell as the player you will hear combat music.

I turn off the in game music but I dont just put on my ipod while playing ... I need to hear everything else. I cant see why you would play skyrim with your own music on instead ... some games are OK for this but I dont see skyrim as one of them.

I do agree with you that it's very, very good. I get shivers when I hear it, which is definitely strange. Never thought that the computer game music that made me shiver would be the opening theme to Morrowind and the menu music from...The Sims.

I usually leave media player playing when i start the game, meaning whatever i have playing will play to the end while playing the game. Lately that has been the new faction themes of Sins Rebellion. Now that is some great music
