The American office is pure gold in my opinion. Much funnier than the UK one.

I really recommend the series "Breaking Bad." It has won lots of Grammy's and is incredibly enthralling.

I will also recommend this. Great show.

NCIS is one of the best crime dramas in my opinion. It also adds a bit of comedy.

Me and my dad watched that show all the time! That and CSI Miami are the only good crime dramas on cable IMO. The Mentalist was good but went downhill though. (note, I said cable )

Some favourites:

Chuck (has just ended :( was great fun)
Lie To Me (ended too soon, Tim Roth is fantastic in it)
I Claudius (soooooo good, deserves a topic of its own)
Clannad + After Story (Heartwarming, lovingly animated and brilliant, at times really, really sad though)
Cadfael (Sir Derek Jacobi being awesome, can't go wrong)
A Touch of Frost (Brilliantly acted UK crime drama with David Jason)
Castle (Nathan Fillion being his usual brilliant self)
High School of the Dead (ridiculous trashy fun)
Blackadder (Wry, clever and very funny)

Firefly
There's a reason Firefly has been mentioned more than anything else. Go and watch it.
The Wire
Twin Peaks
How I Met Your Mother
Sherlock (BBC version)
Doctor Who
Black Books
Green Wing
Peep Show
The IT Crowd
Ah good, quality British comedy. Black Books is a personal favourite of mine.
A Touch of Frost
Blackadder

It's so nice to see some fans of quality TV here. I'd also like to add:

Father Ted
Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle
Roman's Empire
The Young Ones
The Mighty Boosh
Ideal
Yes Minister
The Thick of It
Jonathan Creek
Lewis

All British, all comedy except the last one, which is a crime drama I was only reminded of because someone mentioned A Touch of Frost.

EDIT: Oh, also Being Human, which is one of my favourite shows ever, dunno how I forgot it.

After watching Law and Order SVU I find it very difficult to enjoy any other crime dramas.

I only watch three shows regularly anymore. I'm going to recommend them.

House
Breaking Bad
Southland

House is a show about a doctor who's addicted to pills and a massive jerk.
Breaking Bad is a show about a teacher who makes drugs.
Southland is a cop show with more than average emotional umph.

Explaining what these shows are based on makes them sound silly. On the plus side, Breaking Bad is on Netflix!

I haven't seen that yet. I usually stay away from any kind of BBC drama. They're normally awful.

I'd suggest some of the less well known HBO series, like Carnivale and Boardwalk Empire. You'd have to purchase Carnivale, though, as they no longer air it.
