What if World War 2 had happened in a world with Magic ?

Battles change drastically with new weapons. The the fully automatic machinegun made Napoleonic methods of fighting suicidal leading to high death rates on the trench attack runs of WWI, for example.

That, and the entirely reasonable belief by cavalry officers that it would be bad form to use such uncouth contraptions against gentlemen. Evidently, The Kaiser employed utter cads as his gunners. Sadly, a lot of gentlemen lost their lives as a result of this poor etiquette.

Nazi's would've won. Human sacrifice, man. Human Sacrifice.

On the eastern front: Japan takes Hawaii & Phillipines, but, loses mainland Asia, because of the relative strength of their supernatural traditions. China becomes nationalist, not communist, because of communistic atheism.

The Americas are lost to the suddenly resurgent native peoples.

Russia faces a similar collapse. As I understand it, the soviets were really unpopular with the native Siberian people with their shamanistic culture. I might just be wrongly half-remembering something from the history channel though.

Indeed, with the wave of modern prosperity and 20th century technology, the world changed rapidly, especially in etiquette. In WWl, the armies still tried to maintain some sort of gentlemans code, but when World War ll came about, it became like you imagine a government agent to be, all about sneaking, duplicity, and 'poor sportsmanship' kills. But that's the nature of war, with each generation and new advance of technology, we become more ruthless.

Well if there was magic before the war, it probably never would have happened.

Presumably, if you were designing this universe, things would have proceeded in history to be nearly identical, so I can't imagine it would be much different. Just replace guns with "Lightning Bolt!", planes with flying, etc.

Last time I checked, WW2 was rife with magic. Hitler used a mandrake root to gain power, Himmler relied on ritual magic to invoke the spirits of vikings in Wewelsburg Castle, and Hess flew by himself to Britain to sue for peace because of signs in the heavens.

I wonder what would have happened if WW2 didn't have magic.

Fallen Soldiers of WW1 would raise again as Zombies. Hitler would develop god-like abilities by absorbing souls. Stalin too.
Japanese bow warrior monks could shoot from Japan to America. Hitler's dog Blondie would have been a three headed monster shepard.
Jews = Elves ??? If someone is referring to "Blitzkrieg" he means a migthy thunderstorm which destroyed eastern europe.
Japan's secret weapon is godzilla. Later in the later stage of WW2 Mecha-Godzilla (improved by the magic of buddhist monks.
I laughed
Nazism wouldn't really change that much except the definition of aryan race would change a bit, but not too much.

Well there would be people. And they would be wearing big colorful blankets with pointy hats. Ohh ohh, and they shoot big bright thingies out of their hands!

When I was younger, I read some books by... Harry Turtledove, I think? Anyhow, the series was an "alternate history" in which magic technology, rather than scientific technology, was used during WWII. So planes were replaced with dragons, guns were replaced with rods that shot heat beams, etc etc.

If done well, this might actually make for a pretty good RTS/TBS game.

I'd ride that Nazi occultism train all the way to Washington. (No, I'm not sympathetic to their racial ambitions, but I do have a huge interest in the occultism aspect of the Nazi regime).

Ever read Harry Potter? That's pretty much the whole backstory to the series.

the same i suppose, maybe since the Nazis were the only ones to have studied magic they would have the edge? Any way it wouldn't matter much since whoever had the near demigod-like protagonist character would win, i mean how often does the team with the main character on its side lose? Besides ASOIAF

Let me add a few more question marks to that statement to signify my lack of understanding; ????? I'm just not sure which fantasy story you're relating to where they take on similar roles. also, I doubt Buddhist monks would ever willingly create weapons of mass destruction.

Would make for an unspeakably horrible RTS/TBS.

These Nazis sure were a weird combination of evil and unspeakable silliness.

Battles change drastically with new weapons. The the fully automatic machinegun made Napoleonic methods of fighting suicidal leading to high death rates on the trench attack runs of WWI, for example.

Yet those damned fools who dared call themselves generals consistently used suicide charges that gained a few hundred yards at best throughout the whole damn war.

NOTE; This reminds me of an interesting alternate take on WW1 that I read. In this case, the Triple Entente are "Darwinists" and rely on genetically modified animals to wage war (example; a modified sperm whale as a zeppelin) and the Axis are "clankers" who use very advanced steampunk technology in their war machines. It's a great read IMO. Just remembered, the novels' name is "Leviathan".

Nothing out of the ordinary for a historical figure/movement. Look at the founders of the United States. Most of them were Masons and members of the Hellfire Club.

Hell, look at any world leaders today. They all use ritual magic or deity worship of some sort.

At any rate, WW2 was fought by brave men with rifles, and machine guns and batteries, not with occult hocus pocus. Stating otherwise is denying the facts or just trying to be contrary for the sake of being contrary.

what would the war have been like then ?

This is a classic EpicFail post, if you know what I mean.

But since this thread is still alive, I'd probably go with zombie warfare.

Since I think of spies when I imagine Britain in war, they'd probably have invisibility spells.

what kind of Magic?

I can see the Nazis taking a liking to Voodoo and Shamanistic black magic. The Allies would be going up against an army of liches, raised corpses and German Witchdoctors armed with Voodoo dolls,

The Japanese would probably adopt some form of individual destruction magic like the ability to caste lightening on a single person or burn them to death.

The British could go two ways
either take a similar path as the Japanese and develope their own form of Destruction magic like frost spikes and freezing
or
they could adopt a white-magic approach and fight to nullify the Nazis Black Magic Voodoo

The Americans I'd imagine would take a more "crowd-control" approach. Spells and magic that dealt blows to massive groups of people. the ability to call forth destructive storms or uproot the terrain to make combat more difficult for the enemy.

The Russians I can totally see as being summoners. Like the Nazis but instead of an army of indentured and/or damned souls fighting they conscript familiars, golems, demigods and other mythical creatures to fight with them.

The Elite, spy divisions of each army would probably be trained in some sort of illusion or mental manipulation magic.

Obviously medics would learn healing magics, and possibly ways to bolster the strength of soldiers.

Haven't really thought about this idea too much. It could make for an interesting book, or video-game if done right. I'll be honest though, kind of a weird topic.
